HotHardware reported on December 2, 2025, that GameStop said it paid $30,494.70 for a PSA 10 holographic Gengar Pokémon card brought to the company’s Grapevine, Texas headquarters. That is a reported one-off transaction, not the offer shown on GameStop’s public graded-card estimator: the estimator currently lists a maximum payout of $1,500 for eligible cards.
What GameStop reportedly paid for the Gengar
According to HotHardware’s December 2, 2025 report, GameStop said a customer brought the PSA 10 holographic Gengar to its Grapevine, Texas headquarters and received $30,494.70. The company reportedly assigned the card a value of $33,883 and said it was authenticated and processed under the Power Packs Buyback Program’s inspection, verification, and compliance procedures.
HotHardware attributed this response to GameStop, without naming an individual speaker: “Any trolls who publicly claim that GameStop trade-in values are bad are hereby factually and demonstrably incorrect.” The report also quoted the company as saying “any further objections are without merit and factually invalid.”
Those details remain the company’s account as reported by HotHardware. The available material does not include a transaction record, card certification number, independent authentication, or an independent valuation. It also does not establish the card’s precise edition or provenance.

Is the $30,000 offer available to other customers?
Not according to GameStop’s public estimator. Its graded-card trade-in page says participating stores accept eligible PSA Lighthouse-label trading cards graded 8, 9, or 10, with a maximum payout of $1,500 in cash or store credit. That published cap does not explain how the reported $30,494.70 transaction was handled, so the headline figure should not be treated as a standard offer available through the estimator.
The reported headquarters transaction and the public in-store estimator are different contexts. The sources do not reconcile the gap between them or establish whether special terms applied to the Gengar trade.

How GameStop’s graded-card and Power Packs programs differ
Public graded-card trade-in
The public estimator describes a trade-in route for eligible PSA-graded cards bearing the Lighthouse label. GameStop says offers are final and lists the $1,500 maximum. Participating-store availability and card eligibility matter; the estimator’s conditions, rather than general trade-in assumptions, are the relevant guide for this program.
Power Packs
GameStop’s Power Packs page describes digital and physical graded-card products, including Pokémon. A digital pack reveals a PSA-graded card that the customer can have shipped, keep in a PSA Vault account, or sell through the Power Packs site. The Power Packs terms describe a limited buyback option for digital pack contents and warn that card values fluctuate and that no specific card or value is guaranteed.

Power Packs are a separate product and buyback context; their terms do not establish that the reported Gengar transaction was a typical trade-in or make its payout available to other customers.
How to assess an offer on a graded Pokémon card
A headline payout alone cannot show whether a trade is good value. Compare the offer with evidence tied to the exact card and the terms of the transaction:
Rank #4
- Identify the exact card. Match its edition and other identifying details. The report calls this card a PSA 10 holographic Gengar but does not establish its precise edition.
- Verify the certification and grade. Confirm the certification details for the card being offered; the report does not provide a certificate number.
- Check recent comparable sales. Compare sales of the same edition and grade, not just other Gengar cards or high-end Pokémon cards. The available sources do not provide enough comparable sales to establish this card’s fair market value.
- Compare the actual payout type. Cash and store credit are not interchangeable; use the amount and terms that apply to your own offer.
- Read eligibility, fees, and timing terms. Check the rules for the specific program and location. GameStop’s general trade terms say eligible products and locations are limited and that the company determines condition and trade value; those general terms do not replace the specific graded-card or Power Packs terms.
What the report does—and does not—establish
The $30,494.70 payout and $33,883 assigned value are figures HotHardware attributed to GameStop in 2025. GameStop’s current public estimator separately states a $1,500 maximum payout for eligible graded-card trades. The available sources do not establish why the reported transaction differs from that public cap, what GameStop later did with the card, or whether the customer received more or less than fair market value. The report’s reference to auction sales exceeding six figures does not establish that this particular card was a first edition or worth six figures.
