GameStop shut down Game Informer on August 2, 2024, ending the magazine’s 33-year run. But the closure did not last: the outlet returned in March 2025 under new ownership, with its former team and archive back. It now operates as Game Informer Inc.
What happened to Game Informer?
On August 2, 2024, Game Informer announced that it was closing. GameSpot reported that staff learned of the decision in a meeting that day and were laid off immediately. The magazine’s farewell described the end of its 33 years covering games, reviews and industry news.
The last completed print issue was #367, published in June 2024, according to GameSpot. Content director Kyle Hilliard said the next issue was about 70% complete when work stopped. That was his estimate of the issue’s progress at the time, not a published issue or a measure of the magazine’s overall output.
Game Developer reported that the final print issue covered Dragon Age: The Veilguard and that staff had been working on digital coverage of The Casting of Frank Stone. Those details describe what was in the works around the shutdown; they do not mean the unfinished issue was completed or released.
Why did GameStop shut it down?
The reviewed reports do not establish a reason GameStop gave for the decision. It is therefore not possible to state from those accounts whether the closure was driven by finances, strategy or another factor.
How long had the magazine been running?
Game Informer began in August 1991 as a six-page magazine distributed through game stores, according to Game Developer. It initially appeared every two months and became a monthly publication in 1994. Its connection to GameStop followed the company’s 2000 acquisition of FuncoLand.
