In June 2025, customers at a GameStop in Staten Island, New York, reported that staples used to attach receipts to Nintendo Switch 2 boxes had punctured or marked console screens. The reports describe a localized launch-period incident, not evidence of a widespread or ongoing problem.
What happened at the Staten Island GameStop?
When the Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, customers reported receiving console boxes with receipts stapled to them. After opening the packages, some said they found staple punctures or marks on the screens. GameSpot covered the customer reports, while Tom’s Hardware reproduced a customer post dated June 5: “My switch 2 has staple holes in the screen.” That wording is an individual customer’s account, not evidence of a general console defect.
The reporting located the incident at a GameStop in Staten Island. It does not establish how many consoles were damaged, and no substantiated total appears in the cited coverage. Estimates without a reliable source should not be treated as a confirmed count.
Did GameStop replace the affected consoles?
In follow-up coverage published June 6, 2025, TheSixthAxis reported that GameStop was replacing affected consoles. That is a report about the response to this incident at the time; it does not establish GameStop’s current replacement or customer-service policy.

What happened to the stapler and other incident items?
In July 2025, GameStop auctioned items associated with the incident for charity, including the stapler, a repaired console, packaging and the staple. GameSpot reported that an auction letter from CEO Ryan Cohen described the items as “authentic relics from the now-infamous ‘Staplegate’ incident.” GamesRadar reported that the charity auction result was $250,000. That figure is the reported outcome of the historical auction, not a retail price or an estimate of customer losses.

What the reports do—and do not—show
- Reported: Customers said staples attached to Switch 2 boxes penetrated the packaging and marked or punctured screens at a Staten Island GameStop around launch.
