GameStop’s Retro offering is available at select locations, not a chain-wide conversion. The company’s current Retro page lets shoppers search by ZIP code and browse classic console families, but it does not publish a total store count or guarantee that a listed system or game is in stock locally. Check the locator and contact your store about specific items before making a trip.
What GameStop Retro means
On August 28, 2024, GameStop announced Retro-branded select locations offering physical classic consoles, games on discs, and cartridges for Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and Sega platforms, according to Engadget’s report on the announcement. This describes a selective retail offering; it does not mean every GameStop became a retro store.
The concept has an earlier precedent, but it is distinct: in a July 15, 2019 company release, GameStop described a proposed physical-store concept focused strictly on retro software and hardware in a select market. That historical pilot plan should not be confused with the 2024 Retro-branded announcement.
How to find a Retro location near you
- Open GameStop’s Retro page.
- Enter your ZIP code in the location search and choose a search radius.
- Check the results for nearby Retro-designated stores, then contact the location about the exact console, game, condition, and availability you want.
The page provides a local search, but does not state the current total number of Retro locations. GameStop’s FY2025 Form 10-K reports that the company closed 727 U.S. stores during that fiscal year; that is context about its broader store network, not a count of Retro locations opened or closed. The same filing said GameStop did not anticipate significant U.S. store closures in FY2026 at the time it was filed, which is a dated expectation rather than a current guarantee. Which consoles and games are listed?
GameStop’s current Retro page groups shopping categories by console family. Its visible categories include:
- Nintendo: NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Game Boy families, DS families, and Nintendo 2DS/3DS.
- PlayStation: PlayStation families, including handheld categories.
- Sega: Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast.
- Xbox: Xbox and Xbox 360.

The years are historical U.S. launch years as reported by Engadget; they are not an inventory list. Game Boy Color, PSP, and Nintendo 2DS/3DS also appear among the current page’s visible categories. A category’s presence does not establish that a particular item is available at any given location.
What to verify before buying
GameStop’s FY2025 Form 10-K says its trade-in program lets customers exchange pre-owned gaming and other products for cash or credit, and that trade-ins help it offer previous-generation platforms and related games. The filing also describes refurbishment centers that can test, repair, sanitize, repackage, and resell used items. These processes explain how pre-owned products can enter the broader business; they do not establish the condition or refurbishment history of a specific Retro item.

- For a used console or game, confirm its condition, whether it has been tested, and what return terms apply to that item.
- For a particular game, ask about the exact edition and format; a console-family category does not mean every title for it is stocked.
What GameStop’s filings do—and do not—say about Retro
GameStop’s Form 10-Q for the three months ended August 1, 2026 reported that collectibles accounted for 45.1% of company net sales and video games for 33.3%. In the year-earlier quarter, the comparable shares were 23.4% and 50.9%. GameStop attributed the change primarily to collectible growth and lower video game sales in a period without the prior-year Nintendo Switch 2 launch. These figures describe the company as a whole, not Retro stores; the filing does not isolate the initiative’s store count, revenue, or profitability.
