Microsoft said in October 2025 that some existing Xbox Game Pass subscribers in certain countries would keep renewing at their current price for the time being. The reported exception applied only while a subscription remained active on auto-recurring billing; canceling and buying again meant paying the then-current price. It was not a worldwide freeze, and the reports did not establish a complete list of eligible markets.
Who was covered by the reported price exception?
Microsoft described the policy as applying to “current subscribers in certain countries.” Contemporary coverage named Germany, Ireland, South Korea, Poland and India; another report also named Austria and Israel. These are reported examples, not an official or exhaustive country list. Separate reporting said the United States and United Kingdom were not included in this particular exception. Game Developer reported the delay, while Thurrott.com listed additional markets.
The clarification followed Microsoft’s 2025 Game Pass price update. It did not mean that new purchases everywhere, or all existing subscriptions in every country, were shielded from the increase. In Microsoft’s statement to The Verge, reproduced in contemporaneous reporting, Xbox communications head Kari Perez said: “Our recent Game Pass update remains unchanged. Current subscribers in certain countries will continue renewing at their existing price for now, in line with local requirements. We’ll provide advance notice before price adjustments take effect in these countries.”
What happened if a subscriber canceled?
The reported protection depended on keeping the existing subscription on auto-recurring billing. The subscriber email quoted in the same report said: “At this time, these increases will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside, as long as you are on an auto-recurring plan.” It added: “Should you choose to cancel your plan and repurchase, you will be charged at the new current rate.”

In practical terms, the exception was tied to an ongoing recurring subscription, not a permanently grandfathered price that followed an account after cancellation. Turning off recurring billing or canceling meant subscribers should not assume they could later restart at the earlier rate. The Verge report reproduced by Hall of Fame quoted the email’s terms.
How to check your own renewal price
The 2025 reports cannot confirm the price or eligibility of an individual account today. Check the subscription details and any price-change notices attached to your Microsoft account before deciding whether to cancel or change billing.

- Find the active Xbox Game Pass subscription and check whether recurring billing is on.

- Check the terms for your plan and country before making a change. Xbox says availability and features can vary by time, region, plan and platform.
Xbox’s current subscription information describes charges and terms that apply now; its general terms say charges may be increased on at least 30 days’ notice under Microsoft Store terms. That general provision is separate from the more specific commitment reported in October 2025 for the countries covered by the price exception. Xbox Game Pass information and Microsoft Store terms are the relevant places to check current details.
How much notice did Microsoft promise?
In its October 2025 coverage, Game Developer reported that Microsoft committed to at least 60 days’ advance notice before later price adjustments in the affected countries. That was the reported commitment for this specific situation; it should not be read as a guarantee that an earlier price remains in place indefinitely or as a statement about every market. Game Developer’s October 8, 2025 report attributed the notice period to Microsoft.

A later cloud-hours change is a separate issue
Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that monthly cloud gaming hours would be limited by plan starting in November 2026: Ultimate at 15 hours, Premium at 10 hours and Essential at 5 hours. Xbox also said availability and purchasing options could vary by market. This later cloud-gaming change concerns service use, not the 2025 exception to price increases for certain existing subscribers. Xbox Wire’s announcement gives the details.
