Those are dated media reports, not a verified current GameStop price schedule.

How does that compare with Sony’s price for a new PS5 Pro?
Sony set the U.S. recommended retail price for a new PS5 Pro at $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. That is a recommended price, not a guarantee that a new console is available at that amount. Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement

Even the lowest of the reported GameStop observations is substantially above Sony’s recommended price for a new console. But the comparison needs context: listings can differ in condition and included accessories, and a reported price does not prove the console is currently purchasable.
Is the $1,499 listing the disc version?
Game Developer’s report linked the $1,499 figure to a disc-drive-equipped variant. Sony describes the standard U.S. PS5 Pro as an all-digital 2TB console, with the disc drive and vertical stand sold separately. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page
That makes configuration important when comparing prices. A used unit with a disc drive is not directly comparable to Sony’s digital-only console unless you account for the accessory. The reports do not establish a single confirmed price for each configuration.

Why did GameStop raise its used-console prices?
Tom’s Hardware and Game Developer attributed the reported change to a leaked internal employee memo. The memo was not located as a direct public statement from GameStop, and its authenticity has not been independently established here. GameStop has not been quoted in the cited coverage with a confirmed explanation.

Sony separately explained its own 2026 price changes by citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That statement concerns Sony’s pricing decisions; it does not explain GameStop’s reported used-console repricing. Sony’s announcement
What to check before buying
Before treating any listing as a deal—or paying a premium—verify the details on the retailer’s live U.S. product page:
Quick Recap
- Configuration: Confirm whether the console is digital-only or includes a disc drive.
- Condition: Check whether the unit is labeled pre-owned, used, or refurbished, and read what that label means for the specific listing.
- Total cost: If you want physical games, include the cost of a compatible disc drive when comparing a digital-only console.
- Seller and protections: Confirm who sells the unit and review the listing’s warranty and return terms.
- Availability: Check that the listing is in stock and purchasable at the price shown. Sony’s product page showed the PS5 Pro out of stock when accessed for this reporting, so its recommended price should not be mistaken for confirmed availability.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
