What happened to GameWorks Seattle?
GameWorks Seattle closed in December 2021 amid a wider shutdown of the chain. On May 6, 2022, GeekWire reported that former CEO Greg Stevens and Howard Brand were planning to revive the Seattle venue. The deal included its assets, including arcade machines; Stevens said, “Every single piece of equipment is there.” GeekWire’s May 6, 2022 report
The reopening was initially planned for August 2, 2022, then set for noon on August 3. GeekWire and Seattle Met covered the reopening that month. The former COO, Darren Des Roches, returned at Stevens’ request to oversee the relaunch. GeekWire’s August 1, 2022 tour · Seattle Met’s August 3, 2022 report
Who led the revival?
Stevens, who had served as GameWorks CEO from 2011 to 2018, and Howard Brand, a managing partner at HNR Capital, were reported as the revival’s sole funders. Stevens said the initial focus was Seattle, with expansion decisions deferred until at least six months after reopening. The reports describe the 2022 plan and do not establish the venue’s current legal ownership. GeekWire

What is GameWorks Seattle’s history?
GameWorks was founded in 1996 as a joint venture involving Sega, Universal Studios and DreamWorks, with Steven Spielberg initially involved, according to GeekWire. Its first location opened in Seattle in March 1997. ExWorks Capital owned the chain at the time of the 2021 shutdown; that historical ownership should not be confused with the reported leadership and funding of the Seattle revival. GeekWire
What did the revived venue offer?
The relaunch reused the arcade inventory and rearranged areas for retro games, fighting games, esports, pinball, skee-ball and Dance Dance Revolution. Des Roches described a planned “full array of esports games.” The 2022 coverage also discussed esports and fighting-game events, including a Seattle Online Broadcasters’ Association meetup; those reports do not establish a current event calendar.
