A September 2025 report said the advocacy group Gaming Consumer Rights had launched a website urging consumers to boycott Nintendo, citing objections to Switch 2 marketing, prices, repairs and game formats. The allegations were not independently verified in the report reproduced by ResetEra, and the available information does not establish the campaign’s size or whether it remains active. Nintendo has since announced a higher U.S. system MSRP, effective September 1, 2026.
Who is calling for a Switch 2 boycott?
The group named in the report is Gaming Consumer Rights. A ResetEra thread dated September 28, 2025, reproduces ScreenRant reporting that the group had launched a website asking consumers to boycott Nintendo. The thread is evidence of what ScreenRant reported; it is not independent confirmation of the group’s reach or its claims. The available account does not include the group’s original website text or a named spokesperson’s interview.

The campaign wording attributed to the website was “it’s time we SWITCH 2 a new gaming platform.” That slogan and the criticisms below are reported positions, not established findings. The available dated report also does not show whether the campaign is still active.
What objections did the group reportedly raise?
ScreenRant’s reproduced summary says Gaming Consumer Rights objected to several aspects of Nintendo’s business and the Switch 2. It reportedly alleged misleading marketing and an artificially created impression of scarcity, and challenged the console’s perceived value. The group was also reported to object to console and game prices, repair costs, and games it characterized as repackaged prior-generation titles.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Marketing and availability: The group reportedly questioned Nintendo’s marketing and alleged scarcity was being created artificially. The account does not substantiate those allegations.
- Price and value: The group reportedly argued that the system and its games were too expensive or offered poor value. Those are campaign criticisms, not independent price or value findings.
- Repairs: The report says repair costs were among the group’s concerns, but the available account gives no specific repair prices or examples.
- Game formats and older titles: The group reportedly criticized game-key cards and the repackaging of prior-generation games. These are distinct issues; a game-key card is a format, while the report does not provide enough detail to assess particular repackaged releases.
How much does the Switch 2 cost now?
Nintendo of America announced that the U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Switch 2 system would rise from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. That is the announced U.S. system MSRP, not a guarantee of every retailer’s price; prices in other countries, bundles and later changes may differ. The increase is relevant current context, but it does not establish that the group’s 2025 criticisms were correct.
Game pricing is a separate question. Nintendo announced that beginning in May 2026, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 would have an MSRP different from their physical versions. The policy concerns that defined category of new digital titles; it does not mean every digital game is priced above or below its physical counterpart.

What is a game-key card?
Nintendo’s June 2025 shareholder Q&A describes a game-key card as a game-card specification adopted for Switch 2. Nintendo Support distinguishes it from an ordinary game card: with a regular game card, inserting the card lets the player start playing immediately. The cited Nintendo materials do not settle broader disputes about ownership, preservation, resale or long-term access, so those questions should not be inferred from the format descriptions alone.

Nintendo reported cumulative worldwide Switch 2 sell-in of more than 10 million units as of September 30, 2025. Sell-in is Nintendo’s company-reported measure; it is not the same as an independently verified count of active players or a retail sell-through figure. It also cannot show whether the boycott affected sales: the reported total does not establish cause or measure campaign participation.
