The headline refers to a dated U.S. market snapshot, not a current global collapse. In a March 20, 2025 report, HotHardware said U.S. video-game hardware spending was about 11% lower year to date than in 2024. The same report found that, after 52 months on sale, PlayStation 5 unit sales were about 7% ahead of PlayStation 4’s pace, while Xbox Series hardware was 19% behind Xbox One’s pace.
Those percentages compare each console family with its own predecessor. They do not show that PS5 sold 7% more units than Xbox Series, nor do they establish why the two generations performed differently.
What the March 2025 report actually measured
HotHardware’s March 20, 2025 article reported a Circana-derived estimate for the U.S. video-game hardware market. The approximately 11% decline was a year-to-date spending comparison against the same period in 2024. It was a dollar measure of hardware spending, not a count of consoles sold and not a worldwide result.

Why PlayStation looked stronger than Xbox
The report used a like-for-like generational comparison: each current console was measured against its own previous-generation system at the same number of months after launch.

That is a generation-on-generation result, not a direct PS5-versus-Xbox Series market-share calculation. A console can be ahead of its predecessor while still selling fewer units than a rival, and the reverse can also be true.

What “7% ahead” means
At the 52-month mark, Circana’s comparison, as reported by HotHardware, placed PS5 cumulative unit sales roughly 7% above the pace achieved by PS4 at the same point in its life cycle. The figure describes relative timing and volume within Sony’s own console history.
What “19% behind” means
Xbox Series hardware was reported at roughly 19% below Xbox One’s pace after the same 52 months. That is a comparison with Microsoft’s previous generation, not evidence that Xbox Series sales fell 19% during 2025.

Why spending and unit sales can tell different stories
Hardware spending is calculated in dollars; the generation comparison uses units. They can move in different directions when prices, product mix, discounts, or the share of premium models changes. A market may sell fewer consoles but produce similar revenue if the average selling price rises, or sell more units while generating less revenue after price cuts.
The report also covers a year-to-date spending window, whereas the 7% and 19% figures describe cumulative console-family pace through a 52-month milestone. These are related indicators, but they are not interchangeable measurements.

What the available evidence does—and does not—explain
The figures establish that U.S. hardware spending was down in the reported early-2025 window and that Sony’s current generation was tracking better against its predecessor than Microsoft’s. They do not identify a single verified cause for either result.
A prior forecast, not a confirmed explanation
In its 2024 outlook, Circana expected U.S. video-game hardware revenue to decline because of decreases in both average prices and units sold. That was a forecast for 2024, not a post hoc explanation verified for the 2025 comparison. Circana’s statement was: “In 2024, video game hardware revenue is expected to decline on account of decreases in both average prices and units sold.”

Possible factors remain hypotheses
Pricing, the timing of refresh models, software availability, regional launch differences, subscription strategies, and consumer spending conditions could affect a generation’s trajectory. The cited report does not demonstrate that any one of these caused the gap, and neither Sony nor Microsoft supplied a verified explanation for the specific year-to-date decline in the available material.
Why the headline should not be generalized to the current market
Circana’s later forecast, published in 2026, put total U.S. consumer spending on video-game hardware, content, and accessories at $60.7 billion for 2025, up 1.4% from 2024. That is a broader measure than hardware alone: it combines hardware, games and other content, and accessories.
The $60.7 billion figure therefore cannot prove that PS5 or Xbox Series hardware unit sales increased, nor can it erase the earlier hardware-spending decline. It does show why the 2025 article should be treated as a historical segment snapshot rather than proof of an ongoing fall across the entire video-game business.
How to read console-sales comparisons correctly
- Check the geography. U.S. results should not be presented as worldwide performance.
- Check the metric. Dollar spending, unit sales, revenue, and total industry spending answer different questions.
- Check the time window. Year-to-date results, monthly results, and a 52-month generation milestone cannot be substituted for one another.
- Check the baseline. “Ahead of PS4” and “behind Xbox One” compare each brand with its own predecessor.
- Separate observation from explanation. The reported numbers are observations; any cause requires separate evidence.
The practical takeaway
As of the March 20, 2025 report, U.S. video-game hardware spending was running about 11% below 2024, while PS5’s 52-month unit pace was about 7% stronger than PS4’s and Xbox Series’ was about 19% weaker than Xbox One’s. The clean conclusion is that PlayStation was holding up better relative to its own previous generation—not that PS5 had a 7% sales lead over Xbox Series.

Later Circana data showing 2025 U.S. spending growth across hardware, content, and accessories further limits the headline’s reach. It is useful historical context, but it is not a current all-market verdict.
