A VPS makes more sense when you need the encoder to run away from home without relying on your local computer—but only after you confirm that the specific VPS can encode the video and sustain the required upload bitrate. YouTube does not require either setup; it cares about the incoming stream’s settings and reliability.
OBS on your PC or a VPS: the practical difference

This is an operational comparison, not a benchmark. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies stream requirements rather than preferring a local PC or VPS.
What YouTube requires from either setup
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion and documents supported encoder protocols, codecs, frame rates, bitrate guidance, and keyframe constraints. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection; it describes the transport, not where the encoder must run. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
- For H.264, the guidance lists 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that your home connection or a VPS plan can sustain that bitrate.
- Choose a quality your available upload connection can deliver reliably. YouTube recommends checking connection speed and testing with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the event.
When OBS on a local PC is the better choice
Use OBS locally if this is an occasional rerun, you already have a suitable PC, and you can leave both the machine and its internet connection running. Before starting, make sure the PC has enough spare encoding capacity while it plays the VOD, and that the home upload connection can sustain the selected stream settings.

OBS’s documentation says hardware encoding generally shifts work from the CPU to a specialized component of the GPU, which can help when the computer is doing other work. That does not establish a universal minimum GPU or CPU: capability depends on the machine, source video, resolution, frame rate, and workload. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.
When a VPS is worth considering
Choose a VPS when the main need is to run the encoder away from your home computer—for example, for a planned longer or scheduled rerun when keeping your own PC on is impractical. It is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement.

Before paying for a VPS, check the exact plan’s encoding capability, sustained outbound throughput, and service limits. Those vary by provider and plan; no provider or plan was verified here. A remote machine that cannot encode the VOD or deliver a stable stream does not solve the problem.
How to choose and test your setup
- Decide whether remote operation is necessary. If you can keep a capable PC and home connection available for this rerun, start with OBS. If not, evaluate a VPS for the specific encoding and network needs.
- Set stream quality to match dependable upload capacity. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a target, not a guarantee. For H.264, its recommendations include 12 Mbps at 1080p60 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30.
- Check the encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and lists supported codecs and frame rates in its encoder settings guidance.
- Run a representative test. Include the kind of audio and on-screen movement the VOD contains. During the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health and review any messages. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
- For a VPS, verify the plan before purchase. Confirm the instance can handle the chosen encoding workflow and sustain the required outbound bitrate, and review applicable plan limits. Do not assume those capabilities from the word “VPS.”
