Garmond and Zaza have two distinct roles in Hollow Knight: Silksong: the pair can offer optional help against Moorwing, and they can later be fought in an optional duel in the Whispering Vaults. Their first meeting is in Greymoor, but the duel’s exact trigger is not fully confirmed by the available guide information.
Who are Garmond and Zaza?
Garmond is an old knight who travels with Zaza, his noble companion. They are survivors of a village overcome by the Haunting, and they seek the Citadel’s rulers to demand an answer and justice for their home. Garmond says the pair carry the memory of their village.
The Hunter’s Journal description, as reproduced by the Hollow Knight Wiki, calls them: “Vigorous old knight and their noble companion, working together to see their lands cut free from haunted madness.” Treat this as game text quoted by the community-maintained reference, not as a separately verified publisher statement.
Where do you first find Garmond and Zaza?
Their first meeting is in Greymoor, at a small outcropping near the Bellway Station. A separate Game8 guide also places their introduction in Greymoor and says they can be recruited after Hornet flees or dies during the Moorwing encounter.

Can they help against Moorwing?
Yes. After you have encountered Moorwing and spoken with Garmond again, the pair can appear above the boss arena and offer aid. Accepting is optional. Hornet’s response, as quoted by the Hollow Knight Wiki, is: “The battle ahead may indeed be arduous. I accept your offer of aid, sirs.”
This assistance is separate from fighting the pair: agreeing to their help against Moorwing does not make the later Whispering Vaults duel the same encounter. Their appearances and assistance can depend on how far you have progressed.

How does the optional Garmond and Zaza duel work?
Garmond and Zaza can later be encountered as an optional boss pair in the Whispering Vaults. Gamer Guides lists the duel at 460 HP and says one kill is needed for the Hunter’s Notes. Those are guide-reported details, not publisher-certified statistics.
The Gamer Guides entry explicitly says the exact steps for making the pair spawn there have not been fully confirmed. The Hollow Knight Wiki describes a friendly duel and warns that the opportunity can be missed if Hornet never speaks with Garmond before entering the Citadel. Because the trigger details are uncertain and progression-dependent, speak to Garmond when you meet him rather than relying on a precise, guaranteed sequence.

What to expect in the fight
The Wiki describes coordinated attacks: Garmond can sweep with his hornlance while Zaza holds position, the pair can charge together, and they can jump before striking down. Names assigned to attacks on that Wiki are guide terminology, not necessarily official move names.

The pair may also appear in Sinner’s Road and provide occasional assistance in Choral Chambers. After the duel, they may help in the High Halls Forum battle. These are additional progression-dependent encounters; the sources do not establish a single universal order for every appearance beyond the broad sequence of their Greymoor introduction, possible Moorwing aid, and later duel opportunity.
