Commands execute actions; console variables (ConVars) store settings. The distinction matters especially in multiplayer, where a client may not be allowed to change a server setting.
How to use Garry’s Mod console commands

Open the developer console in Garry’s Mod. If it is unavailable, enable it in the game’s keyboard settings, then use the key assigned to open the console.

Enter the command in the console that matches its context: your client console for client-side commands, or the server console for server-side commands. Some commands can be called from either. The Garry’s Mod Wiki’s Console Commands reference explains that commands may be called from the server or client console.

Check the command’s flags and documentation before relying on it, especially on a multiplayer server. A command may require server access, a permission, or cheats to be enabled.

Commands and ConVars are different
A console command performs an action. A console variable, or ConVar, holds a value that the game or an addon can read, such as a setting. Although players often call both “commands,” their access rules differ. The Garry’s Mod Wiki’s ConVars reference distinguishes client ConVars from server ConVars: clients cannot access a server ConVar unless it is replicated.
ConVar flags describe how a setting behaves. The FCVAR reference documents several important examples:

Why a command works locally but not on the server
A command entered in your own console does not necessarily run on the server. The client and server are separate execution contexts, and server-side commands may require the server console or appropriate permissions. A command’s flags can impose further restrictions.
If the command is marked Cheat, it requires sv_cheats to be enabled in the relevant server context. That is a server setting, not a way for a player to bypass the server’s restrictions. The command listing at Game Host Bros also identifies client/server and cheat-related distinctions; check the entry for the specific command rather than assuming every command behaves alike.

Base-game commands, Sandbox settings, and extensions
There is no single list that describes every Garry’s Mod installation. Sandbox settings commonly use the sbox_ prefix, while gmod_ variables relate to the game. Treat these prefixes as clues, not proof of a particular command’s syntax, default, or availability; verify the specific entry in current documentation or in the installed game.
Lua code, addons, and gamemodes can register additional commands. A command missing from one installation may belong to an extension that is not installed or enabled in another. Consult the documentation for the relevant addon or gamemode. The Game Host Bros list reports 1,966 entries on a page updated August 16, 2026; that is the page’s count, not an authoritative inventory of every command across all possible addon and gamemode combinations.

When a console command does not work

Confirm where you entered it. Determine whether the command runs on the client, on the server, or either, and use the matching console.

Check permissions and flags. Server-side commands may require access you do not have. A Cheat flag means
sv_cheatsmust be enabled in the relevant context. -
Verify that the command exists in your setup. Check whether it comes from the base game, your current gamemode, or an installed addon.

Verify the exact syntax and setting. Consult current documentation or the installed command’s entry rather than inferring arguments or defaults from a prefix or a similar command.

A failed command does not by itself mean the console is broken; execution context, flags, permissions, and extension availability can all explain the result.

Steam launch parameters are entered in a game’s launch options, not typed into the in-game developer console. The Garry’s Mod Wiki lists options such as -noaddons and -noworkshop as launch parameters that temporarily disable addon sources. They can help isolate an addon-related issue, but they are a different mechanism from console commands. See the Command Line Parameters reference.
For addon developers: handle console input safely
The Garry’s Mod Wiki’s documentation for game.ConsoleCommand warns against passing data from a client to that function: newline and semicolon characters can let untrusted input run arbitrary commands. The wiki recommends preferring RunConsoleCommand for that case. This is an addon-author concern, not a routine warning for players entering a known command.
