He said repayment is tied to money left after necessities—not gross income—and that he paid $25 a month while in prison. These are details from a historical interview, not a current account of his finances or living situation.
What happened to Gary Bowser?
Bowser was associated with Team Xecuter, a group Nintendo accused of making and selling devices intended to circumvent technological protections on its consoles. In a 2021 civil complaint, Nintendo alleged that Bowser helped promote the devices, support reseller websites, and provide assistance through online forums. Those are claims made in Nintendo’s complaint; the complaint itself is not proof that every allegation was established.

Bowser told The Guardian that he chose to plead guilty to fewer charges rather than spend the time and money required to contest 13 charges. The available reporting identifies his sentence as 30 months. That sentence should be distinguished from later early-release timing.

The Guardian reported in February 2024 that Bowser owed Nintendo $14.5 million. In the same interview, Bowser described the repayment arrangement as 20–30% of money left after necessities such as rent. That is a share of surplus money, not 20–30% of gross income.

How did he pay Nintendo while imprisoned?
Bowser said he worked paid counseling shifts for $1 an hour and used that income to make monthly payments. “When I was in jail, I was paying Nintendo $25 a month,” he told The Guardian. These figures describe his account of payments while incarcerated, not the size of his current payments.

What did Bowser say about prison and his health?
Bowser described health-care and mobility difficulties during incarceration, including elephantiasis. Those details are his account as reported in the interview, rather than independently established medical findings. He also spoke about the hardship of returning to life outside prison. Because the interview was published in 2024, it should not be read as an up-to-date report on his health, housing, or employment.
