The gathercl.dll error usually appears when Windows or an old installer cannot load the Microsoft Search cluster-resource component. The documented messages include:
An error occurred attempting to read properties for the "Microsoft Search Service Instance" resource type.
Invalid Class String
Error Id -2147221005 (800401f3)
Other cluster and setup messages include:
The specified node does not support a resource of this type.
This may be due to version inconsistencies or due to the absence of the resource DLL on this node.
SQL Server setup may also report:
An error occurred while creating virtual server resources for clustering.
The system cannot find the file specified.
A cluster log can report that it failed to load resource DLL 'gathercl.dll', with error 126.

The 60-second answer
gathercl.dll is a legitimate historical Microsoft DLL, but it is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime file. Microsoft identifies it as the resource DLL for the Microsoft Search Service Instance, used by older SQL Server and Exchange clustered full-text-search installations.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website or copy an unverified file into System32 or SysWOW64. Microsoft’s archived documentation places the file historically in:
%systemroot%WinntCluster
On some systems the equivalent directory may appear as:
%windir%Cluster
That path does not make gathercl.dll a valid component of a modern Windows installation.
What owns gathercl.dll
The file belongs to the Microsoft Search cluster resource used by legacy server software, primarily:
- SQL Server failover clustering, especially SQL Server 2000-era installations
- Exchange Server clustering, particularly Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003-era deployments
- Older clustered full-text-search services
Microsoft describes gathercl.dll as the resource DLL for the “Microsoft Search Service Instance.” Its historical role was to let Cluster Administrator and the clustered service communicate with the Microsoft Search resource.
A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer should not normally need this file. If the message appears on a newer PC, likely explanations include:
- An old SQL Server or Exchange installer is still being run
- A legacy application left behind a cluster configuration
- An incomplete server migration is attempting to recreate an old resource
- A backup or copied configuration refers to the obsolete component
- The original file was removed or quarantined
- A damaged or suspicious program is imitating an old dependency
The file name alone does not establish that a game or ordinary desktop application requires it.
Why Windows says the file is missing
“Missing” can mean more than an absent file. In this case, Windows or Cluster Administrator may be unable to use the component because it is:
- Absent from the cluster directory
- Damaged
- Present on one cluster node but not another
- Registered incorrectly
- Inaccessible because of permissions
- From the wrong SQL Server or Exchange release
- Incompatible with the installed service-pack level
- Missing a required dependency
- Removed by antivirus software
A 32-bit or 64-bit label found on a third-party DLL index is not enough to identify a safe replacement. Match the file to the exact parent product, release, service pack, operating system, and cluster configuration.
Fix 1: Identify the parent SQL Server or Exchange installation
This is the most important step. Do not begin by searching for a standalone DLL.
Check the error source
- Note the program, installer, or service displaying the message.
- Check whether the error appears during SQL Server setup, virtual-server creation, Cluster Administrator activity, or Exchange repair.
- Look for setup logs in the product’s installation directories.
- Open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Check Windows Logs, especially Application and System.
- Check Applications and Services Logs for clustering or the affected product.
- On a failover cluster, inspect the cluster log and confirm which node attempted to load the resource.
If no installed product or setup process can be identified, do not install gathercl.dll manually. The request may come from abandoned software or an unsafe program rather than a valid Windows component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck installed programs
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for SQL Server, Exchange-related administration tools, Microsoft Search, or an application that manages a legacy server.
- On older Windows systems, open Control Panel and select Programs and Features.
- Record the exact product name and version shown there.
If the file is requested by an installer, use the installation media for that installer rather than media from a different SQL Server or Exchange release.
Fix 2: Repair the legacy product from matching media
For the documented SQL Server cluster scenario, Microsoft recommends obtaining the correct file from the SQL Server CD or matching service-pack files. The same principle applies to an Exchange installation: use the original product media and the service-pack level that matches the existing cluster.

- Obtain the original SQL Server or Exchange installation media.
- Confirm that it matches the installed release and service-pack level.
- Start the product’s setup program as an administrator.
- Choose the repair, maintenance, or component installation option when available.
- Select the clustered Microsoft Search or full-text-search component.
- Allow setup to restore the component.
- Repeat the repair on every relevant cluster node.
- Restart the affected setup or cluster operation.
- Test the resource from the cluster management tools.
If setup requests a source path, provide the matching installation media or approved service-pack files. Do not point it to a random copy of gathercl.dll.
The repair worked if the cluster resource can be read and created without the “Invalid Class String,” “system cannot find the file specified,” or missing-resource-DLL message.

A file on the active node does not help if another node may take ownership of the resource.
Fix 3: Restore the file to every affected cluster node
Only use a copy obtained from matching Microsoft product media or an approved service-pack package.
- Sign in with an account that can administer the server and cluster.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the historical cluster-resource directory:
text
%windir%Cluster - On older installations, verify whether the product uses:
text
%systemroot%WinntCluster - Restore the matching
gathercl.dllthere. - Perform the same operation on every node that can host the resource.
- Check the file and directory permissions.
- Retry the original setup or cluster operation.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an unrelated application directory merely because those folders are commonly associated with DLL errors. A cluster resource DLL belongs with the product and cluster configuration that loads it.
If the file is already present, do not assume it is correct. It may belong to another release, may be damaged, or may be inaccessible to the Cluster service account.

Fix 4: Register gathercl.dll only for the legacy cluster resource
Most application DLLs should not be registered manually. This file is an exception only in the specific legacy cluster-resource procedure documented by Microsoft.
From an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the folder containing the approved file.
- Hold Shift, right-click an empty area, and choose Open in Terminal or Open PowerShell window here.
- If necessary, open Command Prompt as administrator and change to the directory, for example:
bat
cd /d "%windir%Cluster" - Unregister the existing registration:
bat
regsvr32 /u gathercl.dll - Register the approved file:
bat
regsvr32 gathercl.dll - Repeat the process locally on every affected cluster node.
- Retry the cluster operation.
A successful registration displays a message confirming that the operation succeeded. If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be found, that can indicate a missing dependency rather than an absent gathercl.dll. It can also indicate that the wrong registration tool or wrong architecture was used.
Do not register an unverified download. Do not run regsvr32 from System32 or SysWOW64 against a random copy.
Fix 5: Check permissions and node consistency
A permission problem can look like a missing-file problem.
- Browse to the cluster directory.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that the system and the account used by setup or cluster administration can read and execute the file.
- Check the directory permissions as well as the file permissions.
- Repeat the check on every node.
- Confirm that all nodes use the same SQL Server or Exchange release and service-pack level.
- Retry the resource creation or setup operation.
If the resource works on one node but fails after failover, the file or its registration is probably inconsistent between nodes.
Fix 6: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined the original file. Restore it only when its origin is confirmed.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
gathercl.dll. - Verify that the file came from trusted, matching Microsoft installation media.
- If the detection is confirmed to be a false positive, use the available restore action.
- Repair or reinstall the parent SQL Server or Exchange component afterward.
- Run another scan.
If the file did not come from known Microsoft product media, do not restore it simply because an old program requests it. Reinstall the parent product from trusted media instead. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how quarantined items are reviewed and restored.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are secondary checks here. They repair Windows-protected files and the Windows component store. They do not normally reinstall an old SQL Server or Exchange cluster component.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches completion, then restart the computer.
SFC may report no integrity violations because gathercl.dll is a product-specific cluster resource rather than a currently protected Windows system file. If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the same cluster error remains, return to the SQL Server or Exchange repair process.
When manually hunting through component versions and repeatedly rerunning DISM or SFC makes it unclear what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and identify repair targets; its free scan shows what it found, while repair actions require the full version.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the error identifies one
A driver update is not the normal fix for gathercl.dll. Device Manager cannot replace a missing SQL Server or Exchange resource DLL. Use it only if the complete error also identifies a storage, network, RAID, or cluster-related device problem.
The Tool Desk

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Storage controllers, Network adapters, and System devices.
- Right-click the device named in the error.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- If the device remains faulty, obtain the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Do not replace
gathercl.dllwith a driver package.
If manually checking several hardware vendors and matching driver versions is taking longer than the underlying repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies the results, while driver installation requires the full version.
Fix 9: Check Windows Features, but do not expect a missing DLL there
Windows Features does not normally provide this legacy cluster resource, but checking the relevant server role can clarify whether a cluster installation is incomplete.
On supported Windows Server systems:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Add Roles and Features.
- Review Failover Clustering and related installed roles.
- Confirm that the role is installed consistently on every intended node.
- Restart if prompted.
- Re-run the product’s own setup or repair process.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the available features.
- Do not enable unrelated features merely because they contain the word “Search.”
Installing a Windows feature is not a substitute for restoring the matching SQL Server or Exchange files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a driver, software, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a reliable way to obtain an old product DLL.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Finish to start the restoration.
Save work first. If no suitable restore point exists, cancel and repair the parent product from its original media. Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance explains when System Restore and other recovery options apply.
Why you should not download gathercl.dll separately
Random DLL download sites are unsafe for this particular file because they may provide:
- A mismatched SQL Server or Exchange release
- The wrong architecture
- A damaged or modified binary
- A file with unknown provenance
- A replacement that leaves the original cluster registration broken
- Malware disguised as a Microsoft DLL
Do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. Do not use registry cleaners or automated DLL-fixing utilities to recreate the cluster resource.
The safe sources are the original Microsoft SQL Server or Exchange installation media and the matching Microsoft service-pack files. Microsoft does not provide a verified modern standalone download for gathercl.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Do not infer the correct architecture from the filename. The correct file depends on the exact legacy product release, service-pack level, operating system, and cluster setup.
Use the product’s own media and installation process. If the old cluster contains nodes with different operating-system architectures or service-pack levels, bring those nodes to a supported matching configuration before attempting registration.

A 32-bit copy placed in a 64-bit system directory, or a 64-bit copy used by a 32-bit legacy installer, may produce another load failure. The correct cluster directory and product setup determine which binary is appropriate.
When migration is safer than repair
SQL Server 2000 and Exchange Server 2003 are obsolete and unsupported. Exchange Server 2003 support ended on April 8, 2014, and continuing to operate an exposed legacy server creates maintenance and security problems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If the repair is needed only to recover an old service, prioritize data recovery and migration to a supported platform. Do not keep an obsolete clustered installation online indefinitely just because restoring one DLL makes setup proceed.
FAQ
Is gathercl.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a historical Microsoft Search cluster-resource DLL associated with legacy SQL Server and Exchange clustering.
Is gathercl.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It should not be treated as a normal current Windows component. Its documented role is tied to older clustered server products.
Where should gathercl.dll be located?
Microsoft’s archived documentation places it historically in:
%systemroot%WinntCluster
The equivalent path on some installations may be %windir%Cluster. The exact location must follow the parent product’s installation and cluster configuration.
Should I register gathercl.dll with regsvr32?
Only for the documented legacy cluster-resource scenario, using the matching file from trusted product media. The commands are:
regsvr32 /u gathercl.dll
regsvr32 gathercl.dll
Run them from the directory containing the approved file and repeat on affected nodes.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. SFC and DISM repair Windows-protected files and the Windows component store. A missing legacy SQL Server or Exchange component normally requires product repair or reinstallation.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why does regsvr32 say the module cannot be found when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be incompatible, or the registration command may be using the wrong architecture. Check the matching product media, cluster directory, permissions, and setup logs.
Should I copy gathercl.dll into System32?
No. Restore it to the product’s cluster-resource directory from matching installation media. Copying an unverified DLL into a Windows system directory can create additional loading and security problems.
What if a game or ordinary application asks for it?
Identify the exact program and path first. This file is not a general game or desktop runtime. An old installer, abandoned component, copied configuration, or suspicious program may be generating the request.
What is the definitive fix?
For a genuine legacy cluster error, repair the matching SQL Server or Exchange installation, restore the file on every relevant node, correct permissions, and register it only when that product’s documented procedure requires it.
