GDC’s 2026 edition was presented as the GDC Festival of Gaming, a new name and broader industry-facing framing for the annual event. It was scheduled for March 9–13, 2026, at Moscone Center in San Francisco; those dates have passed.
Why did GDC become the Festival of Gaming?
The name change signaled a broader view of who the event serves. Rather than presenting GDC only as a conference for game developers, organizers described a gathering for people involved in making, funding, publishing, distributing, marketing, and bringing games to players. The 2026 announcement outlined contributions from development, publishing, distribution, investment, technology, marketing, education, and media, with programming intended to span the game lifecycle. GDC’s announcement introduced the new name and positioning; the Khronos Group’s event listing also described a scope extending from design and code to publishing, marketing, and investment.
What changed for the 2026 edition?
The name and audience framing
The clearest change was the event’s public identity: GDC 2026 was called the GDC Festival of Gaming. Microsoft independently used the “newly renamed” description in its February 12, 2026 article about Xbox at the event. Microsoft’s confirmation referred to the same March dates and Moscone Center venue.
Programming and event staffing
The event director’s note gave a specific example of the program: the Developers Concert was set to return on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The note also said the Festival Crew was the new name for Conference Associates. These details illustrate the edition’s programming and terminology; they do not by themselves establish a wholesale change to the event format. The event director’s note contains those details.

What stayed the same—and what the rename does not establish
The published information supports describing the 2026 change as a rebrand and a broader statement of intended audience and program scope. It does not establish that every part of the event was replaced or that the name alone changed the practical experience for every attendee. The announced venue remained Moscone Center in San Francisco, and the event remained a five-day gathering, scheduled for March 9–13, 2026.
Do not conflate the 2026 name change with later revisions. GDC’s Festival Updates page describes changes for the 2027 edition, including a new Business Hall, different Festival Hall days, and new pass types. Those are subsequent format adjustments, not evidence of what changed in 2026.

Is GDC Festival of Gaming 2026 still upcoming?
No. The announced 2026 dates—March 9–13—have passed. The original announcement and Microsoft’s February 2026 article document the scheduled dates and venue; neither should be read as evidence that 2026 registration remains available today.
