Why was Cairn delayed?
The Game Bakers said playtests had revealed further improvements to make and that the team did not want to rush the launch after five years of work. The studio described the remaining work as debugging, optimization and polish—not unfinished game content. Its announcement did not cite platform certification trouble, staffing issues or another cause. The Game Bakers’ 2 October 2025 announcement stated: “We’ve decided to delay the launch of Cairn on PC and PS5 to Q1 2026 so we can spend a bit more time on debug and optimisation.”

The focus on refinement fits the game’s design as described by its developer: Cairn is a mountain-ascent adventure built around a climbing simulation, in which players read rock faces, choose routes and use equipment and pitons. That context helps explain the kinds of systems the studio said it wanted to polish, but the developer did not identify a specific technical problem.
What was the original Q1 2026 release window?
The revised window applied to the PC and PS5 versions. Q1 2026 meant January through March 2026; it was a release window announced in October 2025, not a precise launch date. The Game Bakers’ official blog later confirmed that Cairn was out in January. Its 30 January 2026 “out now” post directed players to Steam, PlayStation, GOG and Epic Games Store.

What happened to the announced demo update?
Alongside the delay, the studio said a demo update was planned for 13 October 2025. It was to add temporary “ghosts” of other players—including speedrunners, community members and developers—on Mount Tenzen, so players could race them, learn techniques and discover routes. That was the plan announced at the time; the announcement does not establish whether the update is currently available.

Cairn launched in January 2026. The Game Bakers describes it as a climbing adventure starring Aava, where players choose their own routes and make survival decisions about food, water and shelter. In a 15 September 2026 update, the developer said a Nintendo Switch 2 version was planned for early 2027. That is the studio’s announced target, not a confirmed release date.
