When Windows or an application reports that gdiplus.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair the damaged owner instead of downloading a loose DLL.
The safest repair depends on whether one program fails or several unrelated programs fail. A single failing program usually needs repair or reinstallation, while system-wide failures point toward Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

What gdiplus.dll is
gdiplus.dll implements Microsoft Windows GDI+, a graphics API used by desktop applications for two-dimensional drawing, image handling, text rendering, and printing. Microsoft documents GDI+ as being implemented by Gdiplus.dll in its GDI+ overview and flat API documentation.
It is part of Windows, not the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET Framework. Installing one of those packages may fix a separate dependency error, but it is not a general repair for a missing Windows copy of GDI+.

GDI+ was introduced with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Older Windows 2000 applications could receive GDI+ through the historical Platform SDK redistributable, which explains why some file descriptions refer to Microsoft Windows 2000 even when the file is being used on a newer Windows installation.
Version and size references
The following values are examples associated with particular Windows builds. They are not universal requirements, and a different version or size can be correct on a fully updated system.
| Architecture | Example version | Example size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 10.0.17763.1 | 1.62 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.17763.1 | 1.41 MB |
| 64-bit | 10.0.17134.285 | 1.58 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 1.39 MB |

| 64-bit | 10.0.10586.494 | 1.64 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.10586.20 | 1.4 MB |
File versions and sizes vary with the Windows release, servicing updates, architecture, language and component state. WinSxS can also contain servicing copies, while an application may carry its own private copy.

Where Windows stores it
On 64-bit Windows, the normal system locations are:
- 64-bit copy:
%windir%System32gdiplus.dll - 32-bit copy:
%windir%SysWOW64gdiplus.dll
The names are counterintuitive. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files for 32-bit applications.
Do not copy the file from one folder to the other, rename it, or replace either copy with a download. A 32-bit application normally needs the 32-bit copy, and a 64-bit application normally needs the 64-bit copy. Windows file-system redirection manages these locations according to the process architecture, as Microsoft explains in its file-system redirector documentation.
Identify the failure before repairing it
Start by answering four questions:
- Does only one program fail, or do several unrelated programs fail?
- What is the exact error message?
- Did the problem begin after Windows Update, antivirus activity, cleanup software, malware removal, disk trouble, or an application reinstall?
- Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit, and does it have a
gdiplus.dllbeside its executable?
These distinctions matter because Windows may not be loading the system copy. DLL search order can allow an application-folder copy to take precedence over the Windows copy. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order reference.
What common messages mean
-
“The program can’t start because gdiplus.dll is missing from your computer.”
Windows could not find a required copy in the locations searched by the application. -
“The code execution cannot proceed because gdiplus.dll was not found.”
The dependency is missing or cannot be resolved for that process. -
“Unable to locate DLL: gdiplus.dll.”
The application could not locate the required library. -
“gdiplus.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The file may be corrupted, incompatible, or a bad private copy supplied by the application.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
“The procedure entry point [function name] could not be located in the dynamic link library gdiplus.dll.”
The file exists, but it does not export the function the application expects. This is usually a version or compatibility problem, not a simple missing-file problem.
An entry-point error is not fixed by downloading the newest DLL. The application may require an older compatible build, or it may be loading an incorrect copy from its own folder.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application first
Use this path when one program fails but Windows and other applications work normally. It is especially likely to help with an old game, graphics utility, installer, or program that ships its own files.
Traditional desktop program
- Close the affected program.
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or a similarly named option if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and try the program again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the original vendor installer. Download the installer only from the program’s official publisher or use the official game launcher.

Microsoft Store or MSIX application
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove application data, so use it only after Repair and after backing up anything important. Microsoft describes this behavior in its MSIX Repair and Reset documentation.
Game launcher
Open the game launcher and look for Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. The launcher may restore an application-local gdiplus.dll that SFC cannot touch.
This is the correct route when the game alone fails and the error began after an incomplete update, interrupted installation, or antivirus quarantine. If verification reports damaged files, allow it to replace them, restart the launcher, and test the game.

Check the application’s private copy
Open the folder containing the program’s main executable and look for gdiplus.dll. Finding a copy there does not prove that it is safe or correct. It may be missing, corrupted, unsigned, or incompatible with the application.

Do not replace it with the copy from System32 or SysWOW64. Repairing or reinstalling the application gives it the private files intended for that release.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
Use Windows Update before running deeper repair commands.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Test the affected application again.
A component may be restored or its servicing state may be corrected during an update. This step is particularly relevant when the problem began immediately after an interrupted update, system cleanup, or restart.
If several unrelated applications began reporting gdiplus.dll errors, continue with DISM and SFC even if Windows Update completes successfully.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC in its system-file repair guide.
Run the commands
- Press
Windows. - Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because the progress may pause for a while.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
DISM can repair the component store, while SFC can replace damaged protected Windows files. SFC cannot repair a third-party application’s private copy or make an incompatible old application support a different DLL interface.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, connect to Windows Update and run the command again. If that still fails, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
sfc /scannow
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine repair source matching the installed Windows edition, release, language, and architecture. Do not use a random extracted DLL as the source.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and interpreting SFC/DISM output becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and a program-specific gdiplus.dll still needs repair or reinstallation from that program’s official installer.
Interpret the SFC result
-
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
SFC did not find damaged protected system files. Focus on the affected application, its architecture, and its private DLL. -
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”
Restart and test the program.Quick wins for a faster PC:

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If the problem remains, inspect the CBS log, use a matching repair source, and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. -
SFC cannot run or stops with an error.
Restart Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt again, and run DISM before retrying SFC.
Fix 4: Check quarantine and security history
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate application file, although the file name alone is not proof that a quarantined item is safe.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the application stopped working.
- Expand an item and inspect its original path, detection name, and affected program.
Restore a quarantined file only when its path and ownership clearly match a legitimate Windows installation or trusted application. Do not restore a file merely because it is named gdiplus.dll. After malware removal, a replacement file should come from Windows repair or the application’s official installer, not from quarantine by default.

Microsoft explains this workflow in its Protection History documentation.
If the item belongs to a program, reinstall that program instead of allowing an old quarantined copy. If it belongs to Windows, run DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Resolve an architecture mismatch
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not necessarily use the same system copy.
Check the application’s documentation or installer to determine its architecture. Then check the appropriate Windows path:
- 64-bit application on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32gdiplus.dll - 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%SysWOW64gdiplus.dll
Do not rename folders, swap files, or copy a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit DLL. If the application was installed with the wrong architecture, uninstall it and install the correct official build.
An old application may also expect a private 32-bit DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit. In that situation, repairing the application is more appropriate than changing Windows system files.

Fix 6: Consider disk damage or malware
If gdiplus.dll disappeared after a crash, repeated disk errors, malware removal, or unexpected file corruption:
- Back up important files.
- Run a full security scan.
- Run an offline security scan if malware remains suspected.
- Review whether other files are disappearing or becoming unreadable.
- Check the drive’s health using the computer manufacturer’s diagnostic tools.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
To open System Restore, press Windows, type Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and follow the wizard. Choose a restore point from before the failure. System Restore is not a substitute for a current backup and may not repair an application’s private files.
Recommended Free Tools
If Windows remains damaged after these steps, use an in-place Windows repair installation from genuine Microsoft installation media matching the installed edition and architecture. An in-place repair can refresh Windows while preserving supported personal data and applications, but back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s current installation guidance.
Fix 7: Update a failing application, not just Windows
An entry-point error or “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate that the application itself is outdated or loading the wrong private library.
Check for an update from the application’s official publisher. If none exists, reinstall the last compatible release and use the application’s compatibility settings only as a diagnostic measure. If the application was designed for an older Windows generation and no compatible update exists, its publisher may be the only source of a proper fix.
Do not assume that a newer gdiplus.dll is compatible. The correct file must match the application’s expected exports, architecture, and loading arrangement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do drivers or Windows Features fix this file
Graphics drivers are not the normal cause of a missing gdiplus.dll. Updating a display driver may help if the application also has rendering crashes or display problems, but it does not replace the GDI+ system component.
If you do update a driver:
- Open Start and type Device Manager.
- Open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the computer or graphics manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers it identifies as outdated, which avoids manually comparing versions across many devices; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and a driver update will not repair an application-owned gdiplus.dll.
Windows Features are also not a general GDI+ repair. Do not enable random legacy components or install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because gdiplus.dll is missing. Install those runtimes only when the application separately identifies them as required.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download pages may provide a modified file, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or malware. Even a genuine file may not fix the underlying Windows component store or the application that owns a private copy.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, the official application installer, or an official launcher repair function instead.
Do not copy files into System32
Copying a downloaded or borrowed DLL into System32 can create version conflicts and security exposure. It can also hide the real problem while leaving the application-local copy unchanged.
Do not run regsvr32 gdiplus.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. GDI+ is a normal runtime DLL, not an ActiveX or COM component that normally self-registers. Running the command commonly produces a DllRegisterServer error rather than repairing anything. Microsoft documents the tool’s requirements in its regsvr32 command reference.
Do not swap 32-bit and 64-bit copies
The similarly named System32 and SysWOW64 folders serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Swapping files can make more applications fail.
Frequently asked questions
Is gdiplus.dll safe?
The legitimate Windows component is published by Microsoft and implements GDI+. Safety depends on the file’s location, signature, and source. A file with the same name in an unexpected application or temporary folder may not be the Windows component.
Is `gdiplus.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is the implementation DLL for Windows GDI+. Those runtimes may be separate dependencies for the affected program, but installing them does not generally restore a missing GDI+ system file.
Should I install the newest version listed online?
No. The newest file is not necessarily compatible with the application. File versions vary by Windows build, servicing state, architecture, and component source.
Why does only one old program fail?
The program may use an application-local copy beside its executable. That copy can be missing, incompatible, or quarantined even while the Windows copy is healthy. Repair or reinstall the program, or use its launcher’s verification function.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does SFC say everything is fine when the program still fails?
SFC checks protected Windows files. It does not repair a third-party application’s private folder or an application that expects an incompatible export. Investigate the program installation and architecture.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the failure followed a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists, especially if DISM and SFC cannot recover Windows. Back up important data first.
What if the error remains after every repair?
Record the exact message, the failing application, its architecture, the path of any gdiplus.dll it loads, and the event that preceded the failure. Then contact the application publisher or perform an in-place Windows repair if multiple Windows components remain affected.
