GDKP is a gold-based raid loot system: players bid gold on dropped items, the highest bidder gets the item, and the collected gold is commonly shared among the raid. Whether these runs are allowed depends on the WoW Classic game mode and region. Blizzard explicitly prohibits them in Season of Discovery and on Anniversary realms in North America and Europe; its published statements do not establish a complete current rule for every Classic version.
What does GDKP stand for?
GDKP is commonly expanded as “Gold Dragon Kill Points.” Despite the name, it is not a points system in the usual sense: gold is used to bid for loot. Blizzard’s policy definition for Season of Discovery focuses on the exchange itself, defining GDKP as “any raid or dungeon run where items are awarded in exchange for gold.” Blizzard’s clarification is broader than a particular bidding format or raid size.
How does GDKP loot work?
- A boss drops an item. The group identifies loot that players may want.
- Players bid gold. Interested players offer gold for the item.
- The highest bidder receives it. The item goes to the player who wins the bidding.
- The gold is pooled. Gold is collected by the loot master, and the accumulated pot is commonly divided among raid participants after the run.
That describes the usual arrangement, not a universal set of run rules. The sources do not establish a standard minimum bid, bidding increment, payout formula, or guaranteed share. In Blizzard’s policy definition, the central issue is whether an item is awarded in exchange for gold as part of the run—not the exact way a group calculates its pot.
Is GDKP banned in WoW Classic?
There is no single answer that applies to every Classic mode and region. Blizzard has explicitly prohibited GDKP in Season of Discovery and on Anniversary realms in North America and Europe. The official statements cited here do not settle the current policy for every other Classic version or region, so do not treat the restrictions in those modes as proof of either a universal ban or universal permission elsewhere.

Season of Discovery
Blizzard announced that GDKP runs would no longer be allowed in Season of Discovery with Phase 2, describing the restriction as an experiment for that mode. The stated implementation date was February 8, 2024. Blizzard also said GDKP runs could not be advertised in Trade, LookingForGroup, or any other in-game chat channel in Season of Discovery. Blizzard says violations may lead to account action, including suspension or permanent account closure. Those are possible penalties, not a statement that every case receives the same outcome.

Anniversary realms
In a January 27, 2026 post, Blizzard community manager Linxy stated: “The policy around GDKP runs in Anniversary realms has not changed, and GDKP is not allowed on Anniversary realms in NA and EU.” The statement names North America and Europe; it should not be stretched into a ruling about every region. Other Classic versions and regions
A January 2026 player-authored forum compilation says GDKP is allowed on Era and Mists of Pandaria realms and banned on Anniversary and Season of Discovery realms. Its author labels it incomplete and non-official, so it is not definitive policy guidance. The Blizzard statements cited above do not provide a full, up-to-date mode-by-mode and region-by-region policy matrix. Check the current official rules for your specific realm before organizing or joining a gold-for-loot run.

Does advertising a service mean the same thing as running GDKP?
No. GDKP describes how loot is awarded for gold. Blizzard’s January 2026 Anniversary post also addresses the Services chat channel and organized services, including boosting, matchmaking, and escrow. Those service and advertising rules are a separate issue from the gold-for-loot definition; do not infer that every service-related restriction is itself a definition of GDKP.
