gear_detection_win32sa.dll is a genuine application DLL associated with legacy Ubisoft Uplay, Ubisoft Game Launcher, and older Ubisoft PC games. If Windows says it is missing or cannot find an entry point, repair the Ubisoft installation that owns the file instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

gear_detection_win32sa.dll is not a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, graphics driver, or standard system library. It belongs to the Ubisoft software installed with the affected launcher or game.

Windows filenames are normally case-insensitive, so win32sa and win32SA generally refer to the same filename. Public file indexes report a 32-bit build, but they do not provide a dependable current compatibility specification. Do not replace the file with a similarly named 64-bit DLL.

The file normally belongs beside the Ubisoft executable that loads it, often within the Ubisoft Game Launcher or an older game installation. It should not be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Verify the game files
This is the safest first step because it replaces missing or damaged files from the platform that installed the game.
Ubisoft Connect
- Open Ubisoft Connect.
- Select Games.
- Select the affected game.
- Open the game’s Properties or Manage menu.
- Choose Verify files, Verify, or Repair, depending on the client version.
- Allow the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart Ubisoft Connect and launch the game again.
If the launcher itself will not open, continue to the Ubisoft Connect repair steps below.
Steam
For a Ubisoft game installed through Steam:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Open Ubisoft Connect when Steam requests it, then test the game.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Click the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart both launchers.
If verification reports repaired files and the game starts, the missing DLL was probably damaged or removed. If verification says every file is valid but an entry-point error remains, the launcher and game are likely using incompatible builds.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Ubisoft Connect
A game-file scan cannot always repair a damaged copy in the shared Ubisoft launcher directory. This is especially important for an entry-point error, where Windows found a DLL but the executable requested a function that this version does not contain.

Try Windows app repair first
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Ubisoft Connect or Ubisoft Game Launcher.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Click Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If there is no Repair option, or the error continues, reinstall the launcher.
Reinstall from Ubisoft’s official installer
- Close the game and both launchers.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, close Ubisoft Connect, Ubisoft Game Launcher, Uplay, and related Ubisoft processes if they remain open.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Ubisoft Connect or Ubisoft Game Launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Ubisoft Connect installer from Ubisoft’s official website.
- Install it normally.
- Sign in to the Ubisoft account that owns the game.
- Start the game from its owning platform and allow Ubisoft Connect to link or update the installation.
- Run file verification again if the game still reports an error.
If an old game continues to fail after the launcher reinstall, uninstall and reinstall that game through Steam, Epic, or Ubisoft, whichever platform owns its files. Reinstalling only the game can fail when the incompatible DLL is actually in the shared launcher directory.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a launcher file after an update, an incomplete installation, or a false detection.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Ubisoft Connect, Ubisoft Game Launcher, the affected game, or
gear_detection_win32sa.dll. - Check the original file path shown in the event.
- Restore the file only if the path belongs to a genuine Ubisoft installation and the game came from a legitimate store.
- Add an exclusion only for the confirmed Ubisoft game or launcher folder if necessary.
- Run Ubisoft or store file verification afterward.
If the file was found in an unexpected folder, or the installation has been modified with an unofficial launcher or crack, do not restore it. Remove the unofficial files, scan the computer, and reinstall the game and Ubisoft Connect from their official sources.
Fix 4: Resolve an entry-point mismatch
A missing-file error and an entry-point error are different.

With a missing-file error, Windows cannot locate the DLL. With an entry-point error, Windows located gear_detection_win32sa.dll, loaded it, and then discovered that the requested function is absent. That usually means the executable and DLL came from different versions.

- Close Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, and the game.
- Verify the game through its owning store.
- Repair or reinstall Ubisoft Connect.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game from its owning store rather than an old desktop shortcut.
- Remove unofficial mods, overlays, or replacement launcher files.
- Verify the game again if the error returns.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer. Even if the filename matches, its build may not match the executable that loads it.
Fix 5: Check Microsoft Visual C++ only when the error names it
Visual C++ is not the primary repair for gear_detection_win32sa.dll. Consider it only when the error also names a Microsoft runtime such as:
msvcp*.dllvcruntime*.dllmsvcr*.dll
When that happens:
- Identify whether the game is using a 32-bit or 64-bit executable.
- Download the appropriate Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.
- Install or repair the package.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit Ubisoft software. The important point is that the game must receive the correct application files and dependencies. Installing every runtime package at random will not recreate a missing Ubisoft DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
These tools are useful when other Windows components are also failing, applications crash broadly, or Windows reports system-file corruption. They normally will not recreate gear_detection_win32sa.dll, because it is a private Ubisoft application file.

- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the Ubisoft game again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that repairs were completed, or that no integrity violations were found. If the Ubisoft error remains unchanged, return to the Ubisoft Connect repair rather than repeatedly running system scans.
Running these commands manually can make it difficult to know which Windows component changed and whether the Ubisoft files were touched. Graphics and chipset drivers do not normally supply gear_detection_win32sa.dll. Update them only if other games also crash, Device Manager shows an error, or the problem began after a graphics-driver change.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for devices with a yellow warning icon.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
For a clean graphics-driver repair, download the current driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page, uninstall the existing driver only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, then install the new package.

Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run this command merely because the file ends in .dll:
regsvr32 gear_detection_win32sa.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM, OLE, or ActiveX libraries that provide the required registration entry point. There is no evidence that gear_detection_win32sa.dll is a self-registering component. Registration will not repair a missing Ubisoft file or fix a launcher/DLL version mismatch.

Likewise, do not use Windows Features to install random legacy components for this error. Optional Windows features are relevant only when the error specifically names a missing Windows feature or runtime.
What not to do
- Do not download this DLL from a random DLL repository.
- Do not copy it into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not replace it with a file from another game or computer.
- Do not assume the largest or newest-looking version is correct.
- Do not install Visual C++ packages as a substitute for Ubisoft file verification.
- Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined file if its original location is suspicious.
- Do not use an old shortcut after reinstalling the launcher if the store client provides the correct launch path.
A standalone download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible build. The safe source is the official Ubisoft installer and the file-verification process provided by the store that installed the game.
FAQ
Is gear_detection_win32sa.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with Ubisoft launcher software and older Ubisoft PC games, not with Windows itself.
Which games can show this error?
Documented associations include Uplay, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, and The Crew. A reported entry-point error occurred when Uplay launched Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Other Ubisoft titles may show similar symptoms if they share launcher components.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

The damaged file may be in the shared Ubisoft launcher directory rather than the game directory. The launcher and game may also be different generations. Repair or reinstall Ubisoft Connect as well as verifying the game.
Should I install Microsoft Visual C++?
Only if the error names a Visual C++ runtime or another dependency. Visual C++ will not normally restore gear_detection_win32sa.dll.
