Gears of War 4 Review: Is It Still Worth Playing?

A mode-by-mode revisit to Gears of War 4: what its campaign, Horde 3.0, and multiplayer offer, and what launch-era reviews actually establish.

Gears of War 4 is still easiest to recommend to players who want weighty cover-based shooting, cooperative play, and repeatable Horde sessions. Its campaign is a more mixed proposition: contemporary reviewers disagreed over whether its familiar story and structure were enlivened by varied encounters. This is a concise revisit to the 2016 release, based on launch-era reviews and Xbox’s product and launch information—not a fresh performance test.

What Gears of War 4 offers

Gears of War 4 launched worldwide on October 11, 2016, for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Xbox described it as an Xbox Play Anywhere title; the listing identifies a two-player co-op campaign alongside Horde 3.0, a wave-based mode for teams of up to five. In Horde, players level combat classes and build fortifications to withstand successive attacks. Xbox’s launch announcement and the current Xbox product listing establish those release and mode details.

Xbox also said campaign, Horde, and co-op versus supported cross-play between Xbox and Windows 10. Versus cross-play was restricted to private matches. That distinction matters: the launch announcement did not describe unrestricted cross-play for every competitive match.

Campaign: familiar story, varied encounters

The campaign’s central question is whether its new characters and story push the series beyond a recognizable Gears formula. The launch-era reviews offered different answers. The GameSpot review roundup included a critical take that called the campaign flimsy and bound to the status quo; The Guardian’s October 6, 2016 review was more positive about the campaign’s variety. These are individual contemporary reactions, not a present-day consensus.

Gears of War 4 - Xbox One (Renewed)
  • 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
  • Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
  • Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
  • Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles

For a player deciding whether to play solo or with a partner, the official product listing confirms a two-player co-op campaign. The choice is less about a different campaign premise than about how much value you place on moving through its story and encounters with another player. The available launch-era assessments support a mixed verdict on the narrative, rather than a claim that the campaign either reinvents the series or has nothing to offer.

Horde 3.0: the stronger case for repeat sessions

Horde is built around repeatable waves rather than a linear story. Xbox’s description gives the mode its practical hooks: up to five players, class progression, and fortification deployment. Together, these make team composition and where a group places defenses central to its structure. They also give it a different kind of replay value from the campaign: progress comes through repeated matches and class development, not narrative progression.

The Guardian praised Horde 3.0’s effect on the series, while GameSpot’s roundup relayed praise for its challenge. Those reactions make Horde the clearer recommendation for players seeking sustained cooperative play, but they do not establish how the mode performs today or how active its matchmaking is.

Versus and co-op: a cross-play caveat

Xbox’s launch materials presented multiplayer as a major part of the package, and GameSpot’s roundup included praise for refined player-versus-player play. But cross-play had a mode-specific limit at launch: campaign, Horde, and co-op versus supported Xbox/Windows play together, whereas versus cross-play was for private matches. If playing with someone on the other platform is the deciding factor, check the mode rather than assuming all matchmaking is shared.

What the reviews can—and cannot—tell you

Mike Mahardy’s GameSpot review was published October 5, 2016. GameSpot’s review page discloses that Microsoft provided the review copy and notes technical issues in both story and multiplayer modes. That is useful launch-era context, but it is not a current assessment of patches, compatibility, frame rates, or online service health. The Guardian review and GameSpot roundup likewise capture reviewers’ reactions at release, not a new hands-on evaluation.

As a result, the fairest quick verdict is mode-dependent: choose the campaign if you want a two-player story-driven shooter and can accept that its narrative drew criticism for playing safe; choose Horde if class progression, defenses, escalating waves, and cooperative replay are the main draw. The contemporary coverage gives the multiplayer modes a stronger critical case, while leaving current technical condition and online activity unverified.
