Gears of War 4 Stuck on Loading Screen: PC and Xbox One Fixes

If Gears of War 4 never gets past its loading screen, the cause is usually a software or service state rather than a missing accessory or hardware upgrade. On Windows, work through updates, the game reset option, Store-cache repair, account checks and a clean boot before reinstalling. On Xbox One, fully quit the game, apply the documented four-game splash-screen workaround, check updates and reinstall only as a final step.

Why Gears of War 4 can hang while loading

A loading screen can remain indefinitely when the game cannot complete one of the checks required before play begins. Microsoft support identifies corrupted game components or system files as a cause of crashes on a computer, and the same damaged or incomplete installation state can prevent a normal launch. An interrupted update, an outdated Windows or game build, a Microsoft Store or Xbox service problem, an account mismatch, or interference from background software can produce a similar symptom.

Corrupted or incomplete game files

If an update stopped partway through or an installation file became damaged, the game may reach its initial screen but fail when it tries to read the next component. Resetting the Windows app is intended to restore a corrupted installation state. Reinstallation replaces the local files, but it takes considerably longer and should therefore come after the less invasive repairs.

Windows, game and service updates

Missing Windows updates or a game build that is not current can create launch failures. Store-delivered games also depend on Microsoft Store and Xbox PC services. A machine that has been waiting for a restart after an update may continue presenting the old failure until the restart is completed.

Microsoft-account and Xbox-service conflicts

On PC, the Xbox app and Microsoft Store should be signed in with the same Microsoft account. Official Gears support warns that using different accounts can block online play. Even when the visible symptom is a loading screen, an account or Gaming Services problem can stop the game from finishing its startup checks.

Background software conflicts

Startup programs, security utilities, drivers and other background services can interfere with a game launch. A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of non-Microsoft services and startup items, allowing you to test whether another program is responsible without immediately removing the game.

Quick decision guide

Platform Start with Next level Last resort
Windows PC Install Windows and game updates; restart Reset the game, reset Microsoft Store cache, verify accounts, then clean boot Reinstall after the earlier steps fail
Xbox One Fully quit Gears of War 4 and retry after checking updates Open four other games through their initial splash screens, then launch Gears Reinstall the game

The Xbox workaround is historical, so current console software may behave differently or use different menu labels. Treat it as a low-risk test rather than a guarantee.

Fix Gears of War 4 stuck on loading on Windows PC

Follow these steps in order. Test the game after each major change so you know which action resolved the problem.

1. Install every pending Windows and game update

  1. Open Windows Update and install all available updates.
  2. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require a restart.
  3. Open the Microsoft Store or Xbox app, depending on where you installed the game, and allow Gears of War 4 to finish updating.
  4. Launch the game again after the download and installation have completed.

Do not test while an update is paused, queued or still verifying. Microsoft support links launch failures to missing updates and to incomplete or corrupted installation files, so establishing a fully updated state is the safest first check.

2. Reset the game from Windows app settings

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Apps, then the installed-apps list (older Windows releases may call it Apps & features).
  3. Select Gears of War 4 and open Advanced options.
  4. Choose Reset, wait for Windows to complete the operation, and restart the PC.
  5. Launch the game and check whether it passes the loading screen.

The reset action is specifically described by Microsoft support as a way to restore a corrupted installation state. The exact location and wording can vary by Windows version, but the relevant control is the app’s Advanced options page, not a generic Windows reset.

3. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

If you obtained the game through the Microsoft Store, use Windows’ Microsoft Store cache-reset action, then restart the Store and try the game again. A stale Store cache can leave licensing, download or update information out of sync with the installed files. Close the Store before performing the reset, and let it reopen fully afterward before launching Gears.

4. Confirm the Xbox app and Microsoft Store use one account

  1. Open the Xbox app and note the Microsoft account currently signed in.
  2. Open the Microsoft Store account menu and check that it is the same account.
  3. If they differ, sign out where necessary and sign both applications into the account that owns or has access to the game.
  4. Restart Windows and test again.

Official Gears support warns that different accounts between these applications can block online play. Aligning them also removes a common source of entitlement and Gaming Services confusion before you attempt a reinstall.

5. Run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool when Xbox PC services fail

Use the Gaming Services Repair Tool if the Xbox app reports a service problem, the game repeatedly returns to a sign-in state, or account alignment did not resolve the loading hang. The tool is intended for PC Gaming Services failures; it is not a hardware diagnostic and does not replace the update and reset steps above. After it completes, restart Windows and launch the game from the same account you verified in the previous step.

6. Perform a clean boot to isolate background conflicts

  1. Open Windows’ system-configuration tools and disable non-Microsoft services and startup programs for a test boot. Keep Microsoft’s services enabled.
  2. Restart the PC into that clean state.
  3. Launch Gears of War 4 before opening optional utilities, overlays or other startup applications.
  4. If the game loads, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between tests, until the conflicting program is identified.
  5. Return Windows to its normal startup configuration after testing if the clean boot did not help.

A clean boot is a diagnostic step: it narrows the cause to software that normally starts with Windows. It does not repair game files, and it should not be treated as a permanent way to run the PC unless you deliberately choose that configuration.

7. Reinstall only after the preceding PC steps fail

Use reinstallation as the final Windows remedy because it requires redownloading the game and still may not fix an account or service conflict. Before removing it, confirm that Windows and the game are updated, the app reset has been attempted, the Store cache has been reset, both applications use the same account, and a clean-boot test has been completed. Microsoft support answers describe redownloading as a later remedy after these troubleshooting actions.

Fix an infinite loading screen on Xbox One

1. Fully quit the game

Open the Xbox guide, highlight Gears of War 4, and use the console’s quit option rather than simply returning to the dashboard. Start the game again once it has closed. This clears a suspended session and is less disruptive than reinstalling.

  • A new generation of soldiers battles the enemy in Gears of War 4
  • the next game in the blockbuster third-person shooter series.
  • This is the best entry in the series.

2. Try the documented four-game splash-screen workaround

  1. Quit Gears of War 4 completely.
  2. Open four other installed games, one at a time.
  3. Allow each game to pass its initial splash screen before closing it or moving to the next one.
  4. After the fourth game has passed that screen, launch Gears of War 4 again.

This sequence comes from a historical known-issue report for an infinite-loading problem on Xbox One. It is a workaround, not a statement that four particular games are required by the current version of the console software. If your dashboard or game behavior differs, skip to the update check rather than repeatedly forcing the sequence.

3. Check Xbox and game updates

Use the console’s update controls to verify that both the system and Gears of War 4 are current. Apply any pending update, restart the console, and try a fresh launch. An old game build or an incomplete update can reproduce a loading failure even after the workaround has appeared to help once.

4. Reinstall as the Xbox last resort

If quitting, the four-game workaround and updates do not change the behavior, reinstall the game. The known-issues report identifies reinstallation as the fallback. Preserve any cloud-synced saves where applicable, and allow the entire download and installation process to finish before launching. Do not interrupt the first update after reinstalling.

What the symptom tells you

  • Loading stops immediately after an update: finish all Windows, console and game updates, then restart before trying a reset.
  • The Microsoft Store or Xbox app repeatedly asks you to sign in: compare the accounts in both applications and use Gaming Services Repair Tool if the PC service is failing.
  • The game loads in a clean boot but not normal Windows: investigate startup programs and background services in groups.
  • The Xbox workaround changes the result: the historical console issue may have been related to the suspended or cached launch state; still check for updates before relying on the workaround.
  • Nothing changes after reset and reinstall: the remaining cause may be an account, service or platform issue rather than a damaged local game file.

What not to buy or change first

The documented remedies involve software settings, account checks, updates, cache and app reset actions, clean booting and reinstallation. They do not establish that a new controller, SSD, cleaning kit or other accessory is required. Avoid spending money on hardware before completing the platform-specific sequence and identifying whether the failure follows the installation, account or service state.

Limits of the available evidence

No published prevalence figure establishes how often loading-screen failures occur, so it is not possible to assign a reliable percentage to any one cause. The Xbox four-game procedure is historical, and current Windows, Xbox app and console menus or service behavior may differ after later updates. These steps are troubleshooting procedures: they identify and remove common software states, but they cannot prove a single cause when the symptom persists.
