Cliff Bleszinski says he is considering a return to game development, but he has not announced a new game. In a July 2026 interview, the original Gears of War creator looks back on the mistakes he believes led to Boss Key Productions’ closure and describes a growing preference for cooperative, player-versus-environment games. He is not involved in Gears of War: E-Day, according to GameSpot.
What did Cliff Bleszinski say about Gears of War: E-Day?
Bleszinski is the original creator and lead designer associated with Gears of War, but that history does not make him part of the current Gears of War: E-Day team. GameSpot reported in May 2026 that he has no involvement in the game: GameSpot’s report on Bleszinski and Hollow Point.

The July 2026 80 Level interview focuses principally on his career, Boss Key Productions and whether he might make games again. It does not establish a specific opinion or quotation from him about E-Day, so his comments about his own future should not be mistaken for commentary on the game’s development.

In his retrospective with Brian Crecente for 80 Level, published July 17, 2026, Bleszinski describes Boss Key’s closure as the result of accumulated errors, not one decisive failure. This is his account of the studio’s history, rather than an independent audit of its decisions.

Leadership and founder identity
Bleszinski says he wanted Boss Key to be unmistakably his studio, and now sees that impulse as a mistake: “I wanted it to be my studio; that was my ego creeping in.” He also believed his own reputation would draw lasting loyalty. In hindsight, he says, players were more loyal to games than to the person who made them: “I thought there was this brand loyalty from the people who knew who I was, but it turns out people are loyal to the game, but they’re not necessarily loyal to the person.”
He says the company grew from an initial team of 15 to 20 people to about 75. Those figures are part of Bleszinski’s account in the interview. His broader lesson is that a studio needs an identity and leadership beyond its founder’s personal brand, as well as people who can challenge the person at the top.

Publisher incentives and support
Bleszinski also revisits Boss Key’s publishing deal with Nexon and the support and incentives around it. His summary is: “When the deal is so good for one side, the other side isn’t as incentivized.” He presents publisher terms as one factor in the studio’s difficulties, not as a complete explanation for them.

Game direction, launch and audience
His account also includes decisions about LawBreakers’ direction and launch communication, the console platform the studio chose, and how it responded when the game struggled commercially. Those choices affected how the game could reach potential players and how its identity was conveyed. Bleszinski does not reduce the outcome to a single misjudgment.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Multiplayer population and matchmaking
A multiplayer game’s health depends on players being able to find one another. As an audience contracts, matchmaking can become harder, which can make a game less appealing to those who remain. Bleszinski discusses that kind of compounding problem as part of his reflection on the game’s commercial difficulties.
Is Cliff Bleszinski returning to game development?
He says the desire to make games is returning, but his July interview is not an announcement of a new title or studio. He had already dipped back into development by consulting on the asymmetric horror game Soul Walker. He also says he is not ready to share specifics about a project of his own.

GameSpot separately reported in May 2026 that Bleszinski had outlined Hollow Point, a concept for a two-player horror-action game featuring an ex-Marine and a young woman with psychic abilities. That report says there is no certainty the game will be made. It is a separately discussed concept, not confirmation that Hollow Point is the project Bleszinski had in mind during the July interview.

Bleszinski says he is more interested in player-versus-environment (PvE) and cooperative play than in making another player-versus-player (PvP) game. He points to the appeal of playing online with friends, including the cooperative Horde mode in Gears of War 2. As quoted by Rick Lane in PC Gamer’s July 19, 2026 report, he said: “Horde mode saved Gears 2, and I believe that space is evergreen because players just want to hop online with friends and shoot some stuff, no frills, no questions asked.”

His interest is not only in a particular mode. “At the end of the day, I want to create characters and worlds,” he tells 80 Level. He says he wants to make characters and settings compelling enough that players might cosplay them or get tattoos inspired by them. That describes his creative ambition, not a confirmed design brief for a new game.
What else did Bleszinski share in the interview?
Bleszinski says he woke in a hospital on March 23, 2026, after a seizure he attributed to his drinking, and then pursued treatment and sobriety. This is his personal health disclosure in the 80 Level interview, not medical advice.
The interview’s central tension is between his renewed creative interest and the caution of someone reconsidering his past leadership. Bleszinski is open to making games again, especially cooperative PvE, but the available statements do not establish what he will make—or whether a new project will proceed.
