What does “a story of many origins” mean in E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is set at the start of the Locust invasion, fourteen years before the original Gears of War. The official game page says it follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts from below. The game’s premise is an origin story for that catastrophe and for the characters facing it—and, as Xbox Wire later explained, for the Chainsaw Lancer as well. Gears of War official game page

The phrase “story of many origins” came from a 2024 Xbox Wire interview with narrative director Nicole Fawcette. At the time, she confirmed that the Chainsaw Lancer was among the origins being explored but held back the specifics. “It doesn’t currently exist in that period… but it’s not a Gears game if you’re not chainsawing Locust!” she said. How does the Chainsaw Lancer originate in the game?
Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 feature supplied the central answer: “in E-Day, the Chainsaw Lancer is born on the battlefield, kit-bashed from a prototype on the front lines of the invasion.” In other words, the weapon is not presented as an established piece of equipment waiting for Marcus and Dom at the start of E-Day. In a June 9, 2026 Xbox Wire podcast transcript, Fawcette also describes the invention as coming from a hardware-store chainsaw. That detail connects the improvised weapon in the game to a recognizable chainsaw, while the feature’s prototype account explains how the Lancer is assembled on the invasion’s front lines. Why is the Lancer in E-Day if it did not exist yet?
The apparent timeline conflict comes from adapting a scene from the books. Fawcette says the relevant book moment takes place about a year later than the events of E-Day. The game moves that moment earlier so the Lancer can be introduced during the invasion story. She calls the change a “lift and shift,” and explains that the team needed the weapon in this game: “We couldn’t have a Gears game without the chainsaw Lancer.”

That distinction matters: the game’s origin and the book chronology are not identical. E-Day brings the chainsaw-origin scene forward; it does not establish that the scene occurs at the same point in the books. The game’s battlefield prototype account is the explanation for its version of the weapon’s beginnings.
