Yes. Gears of War: E-Day is playable on the Steam Machine, but the tested results show a firm choice between image quality and smoothness. At 2560×1440 (2K), 30 FPS is the quality target; reaching 60 FPS requires AMD FSR 4 Performance and the Low preset. Native 4K is not practical, while 1080p offers the widest range of usable settings.
What performance to expect
SteamDeckHQ’s 2026 testing found enough headroom for either a higher-quality 30-FPS presentation or a lower-quality 60-FPS mode. The exact Steam Machine model and display used were not disclosed, so these settings are a practical reference rather than a guarantee for every configuration.
The key distinction is that “2K/60” means a 2560×1440 output reconstructed from a much lower internal resolution with FSR 4 Performance. It does not mean native 1440p rendering at High quality.
Best settings by resolution and frame-rate goal
| Goal | Upscaling | Quality preset | Frame-rate target | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2K image quality | FSR 4 Quality | High | 30 FPS cap | Sharper, richer image with a 30-FPS limit |
| 2K performance | FSR 4 Performance | Low | 60 FPS target | Smoother motion, but substantially reduced detail and reconstruction quality |
| 1080p image quality | FSR 4 Quality | Ultra | 30 FPS | Highest visual-quality option in the tested recommendations |
| 1080p performance | FSR 4 Balanced | Medium | 60 FPS | Better responsiveness with lower effects and texture quality |
| 4K output | FSR 4 Balanced | Low | About 30 FPS | Requires reconstruction; native 4K is not viable in this test |
Recommended setup for 1440p (2K)
Choose 2K/30 for image quality
- Set the output resolution to 2560×1440.
- Select the High quality preset.
- Set FSR 4 to Quality.
- Apply a 30-FPS cap.
This is the tester’s 2K quality recommendation. It preserves more detail than the 60-FPS route and avoids presenting Performance-mode reconstruction as native 1440p.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose 2K/60 for responsiveness
- Keep the output at 2560×1440.
- Select the Low preset.
- Set FSR 4 to Performance.
- Target 60 FPS.
This is the practical 2K/60 preset. Expect softer fine detail and fewer visual effects than in the High/30 configuration, particularly during movement and busy scenes.
When 1080p is the better choice
1080p/30
For a quality-focused 1080p setup, use the Ultra preset, FSR 4 Quality, and a 30-FPS cap. This combination gives the tester’s highest-quality recommendation, although its lower frame rate makes it less responsive than the 60-FPS mode.

1080p/60
For smoother controls, use Medium quality with FSR 4 Balanced and a 60-FPS target. A 1080p display also hides some of the softness introduced by Balanced reconstruction better than a larger 1440p or 4K display.
Why 4K is a compromise
The tested 4K configuration uses FSR 4 Balanced, the Low preset, and a target of roughly 30 FPS. Rendering natively at 3840×2160 is not a realistic target for this hardware class in the reported test. Even the recommended 4K path depends on aggressive reconstruction and reduced settings, so a 1440p/60 or 1440p/30 setup is generally the more balanced choice.

How demanding is the PC version?
Published PC targets from PC Gamer and TechSpot rely on upscaling at every listed tier and require a graphics card with hardware ray-tracing support. The expanded targets are 1080p/60 at Medium, 1440p/60 or higher at High, and 4K/60 or higher at Ultra, using DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, or XeSS 3.0. The stated storage requirement is 115 GB.
The Ultra 4K/60-plus tier is listed with an RTX 5070 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT. Those specifications help explain why the Steam Machine test reaches 60 FPS only by combining Low settings with FSR 4 Performance rather than matching native-resolution desktop quality.

CPU performance matters unusually much
Tom’s Hardware measured the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at 42% faster than the Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High in its E-Day testing. The publication reports unusually strong scaling across CPUs. Its built-in benchmark is close to real gameplay, though the sweeping camera makes it slightly slower than representative scenes.
As a result, two Steam Machines with similar graphics capability can produce different frame-rate results if their processors differ. A 60-FPS target is most sensitive to CPU headroom at lower resolutions, where the graphics workload is reduced.

Which Steam Machine mode should you use?
- Use 2K/30 if image quality and higher settings matter more than responsiveness.
- Use 2K/60 if smooth aiming and movement are your priority and you accept Low settings and FSR 4 Performance.
- Use 1080p/60 for the clearest path to smooth play with a Medium preset.
- Use 4K/30 only if 4K output is essential; keep FSR 4 Balanced and Low settings.
A 1440p 60Hz display is a natural match for the tested modes: it can show either the quality-focused 30-FPS configuration or the performance-focused 60-FPS configuration without requiring a 4K upscale target.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Gears of War: E-Day runs well enough on Steam Machine, but not at native 2K or 4K with high settings and 60 FPS. The best balance is 2K/30 with FSR 4 Quality and High settings; 2K/60 is achievable with FSR 4 Performance and Low settings, while 4K is best treated as an upscaled 30-FPS mode.
