How the gameplay and modes compare
E-Day: an origin story with updated movement
E-Day goes back to the first Locust attack rather than continuing Kait Diaz’s story. Xbox describes its combat as familiar cover-based Gears action, with modernized movement and traversal intended to add freedom and verticality. The official mode lineup includes campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus. Xbox describes Horde Siege as class-based survival for four players on larger maps. Xbox
That means the broad combat identity remains recognizable, but E-Day is not simply presented as a remake of an older campaign: its official description emphasizes movement and traversal as changes to how players navigate fights. A TechRadar review likewise characterizes the game as recognizably Gears while noting somewhat more open levels and a refined weapon-upgrade system. Those are the reviewer’s impressions, not a comprehensive developer specification.
Gears 5: Kait’s campaign, plus Horde and Escape
Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz and offers campaign co-op alongside Versus, Horde, and Escape. Its official page also describes carrying character and weapon skins into new playthroughs, plus bonus difficulties and modifiers. Xbox

- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
The clearest mode-level distinction is that E-Day’s announced PvE lineup features Horde Siege, while Gears 5 has both Horde and Escape. The available descriptions establish those mode names and broad formats, but do not provide enough detail for a direct, feature-by-feature comparison of their progression systems or content.
How co-op and local play differ
E-Day supports online campaign play for up to four players, and its Xbox Store listing specifies two-player split-screen on console. Gears 5 supports three-player campaign co-op either online or split-screen. If local couch co-op is your priority, the documented split-screen party sizes are therefore different. Performance: what the official FPS claims do and do not mean
E-Day’s up-to-60-FPS target
Xbox says E-Day is built for 4K resolution and up to 60 FPS across campaign and multiplayer. The Xbox Store listing says a compatible display is required for 4K and 60 FPS. These are official targets, not independent measurements; they do not establish that every platform or scene renders at native 4K or holds 60 FPS throughout. Xbox Wire Xbox Store

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
Gears 5’s 120-FPS Versus claim
The official Gears 5 page says its Xbox Series X|S update includes up to 120 FPS in Versus and variable refresh-rate support; it separately lists 4K HDR Ultra visuals for Series X. The 120-FPS figure is specific to Versus. It should not be treated as evidence that Gears 5 is categorically faster than E-Day: the statements cover different modes and do not come from a same-console, same-settings test. Xbox
What PC testing indicates
In a PC CPU benchmark published October 1, 2026, Tom’s Hardware tested 25 Intel and AMD processors with an RTX 5090 at 1080p to make CPU differences more visible. It omitted 4K from the CPU comparison because its graphics analysis found the game GPU-bound at that resolution. The outlet found E-Day CPU-demanding in the scenes it tested and used the game’s built-in benchmark as a reasonable approximation, while noting that the benchmark did not exactly match its in-game test scenes. These results describe that test setup, not a universal PC hardware requirement or a conclusion about Xbox performance. Tom’s Hardware

Xbox published final PC specifications on September 17, 2026, after continuing to iterate on stability and performance following the multiplayer open beta. Because specifications and performance can change with updates, consult the current official PC specifications for component requirements rather than relying on a fixed recommendation here. A Windows Central review reports strong performance on Xbox Series X, with slowdowns in some particularly heavy late sequences; the reviewer did not experience a crash. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for every console or play session. Windows Central

- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
Gears 5 is also listed as optimized for Xbox Series X|S, with Windows and Steam links on its official page. Which game fits which player?
- Choose E-Day if you want the Marcus-and-Dom origin story, a return to the first Locust attack, and the newer movement and traversal emphasis.
- Choose Gears 5 if you want Kait Diaz’s campaign or specifically want its documented Escape mode and three-player split-screen campaign co-op.
- For online co-op, compare E-Day’s online campaign capacity of up to four with Gears 5’s three-player campaign co-op, and account for E-Day’s subscription requirement for online multiplayer.
- For high-refresh-rate play, note that Gears 5’s 120-FPS statement is for Versus, while E-Day’s official claim is up to 60 FPS across campaign and multiplayer. Neither claim is a direct benchmark against the other game.
Accessibility details to verify
The official Gears 5 page lists full controller remapping, single-stick movement, Adaptive Controller support, narrated UI and menus, and improved subtitles.
