How do the stories differ?
E-Day returns to the Locust invasion’s beginning
E-Day is a prequel rather than a continuation of the later saga. It is set 14 years before the first Gears of War and depicts the invasion’s beginning through Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. Its appeal is the chance to see the franchise’s central conflict at its origin, rather than follow events after the original trilogy.
Gears 5 puts Kait Diaz at the center
Gears 5 advances the story and shifts the lead to Kait. Its campaign follows her investigation into her connection to the enemy and the threat facing Sera. Choose it for a later chapter in the series and a story built around Kait’s personal mystery; choose E-Day for the invasion-era origin story.
What changes in gameplay?
E-Day keeps cover combat but reworks movement
The Coalition describes E-Day as built from scratch while retaining Gears’ cover-based core. Its developers say cover has been rebuilt with additional types, heights, and actions. They identify movement as the largest area of change, emphasizing more momentum, clearer transitions, and distinct roles for sprinting, evading, and sliding. These are design descriptions, not evidence that one game plays objectively better: the available official material does not offer a controlled, direct comparison with Gears 5.

The gameplay update also describes returning enemies such as Seeders, Boomers, and Reavers. Enemy combinations are intended to create different tactical challenges in solo and co-op play, but that description should not be mistaken for a hands-on assessment of difficulty or feel.
Gears 5 offers a different mode mix
The official Gears 5 overview highlights its campaign, refreshed multiplayer, Horde, and Escape. The published material used for this comparison does not provide enough detail to make a precise claim about how its movement, difficulty, or combat quality compares with E-Day. Treat those as matters of personal preference rather than settled differences.

How many players can play co-op?
E-Day campaign: up to four online or two on console split-screen
E-Day can be played solo, with two players in console split-screen, or with up to four players online. The June 2026 announcement says players can choose any of four campaign characters from the start. Online campaign co-op requires a Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer, according to the Xbox product listing.
Gears 5 campaign: three players online or split-screen
Gears 5 supports three-player campaign co-op, either online or split-screen. Its PC guidance confirms cross-play between Xbox One and PC for Campaign Co-Op, Versus, Horde, and Escape, and says local campaign split-screen is supported on PC. Platform combinations and online requirements can differ, so check current platform guidance for the setup you intend to use.

What PvE modes are included?
E-Day: Horde Siege and Combat Training
E-Day adds Horde Siege, a 12-player PvE mode arranged into three squads working across shared battlefield missions. Its announcement also describes Combat Training as supporting four-player co-op. Horde Siege is the clearest announced distinction for players looking for a large-group PvE mode.
Gears 5: Horde and Escape
Gears 5 includes Horde and Escape. These give it two named PvE options in addition to the campaign; the official overview does not provide a directly comparable player-count or structure for those modes in the material cited here.

Platforms, release timing, and access
As of October 3, 2026, Xbox lists E-Day for release on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC through Microsoft Store and Steam, and says it is included at launch in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Availability and subscription terms can vary by region; check the live Xbox listing for current details. Online co-op and multiplayer require a Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer.
Gears 5 is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows. Its official page says the Game of the Year Edition includes the campaign, multiplayer, and the Hivebusters campaign expansion; check the listing for current editions and access options.
