To make more room on a PS5, start at Settings > Storage and check what is taking up space. Then delete games you can download again later, move rarely played PS5 games to USB extended storage as an archive, or install a compatible M.2 SSD if you want extra space that can launch PS5 games. Before downloading, check Settings > Storage > Installation Location and choose an available destination.
Check what is using PS5 storage
On the home screen, open Settings > Storage. Sony says this view tracks space used by games and apps, media, and saved data. Review the categories before removing anything so you can target the kind of data you actually want to clear. Sony’s storage-management guide explains the categories and available controls.
Delete a game you can download again
To remove an install, go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the items you want to remove, and confirm. Sony says deleted games and applications can be downloaded again from your game library, so this is a no-hardware option when you are willing to download a game again before playing it. Removing the install is distinct from managing saved data and captures; review those separately if you intend to clear them too.
Choose where new games are installed
Check Settings > Storage > Installation Location to direct PlayStation Store downloads to an available location, such as compatible M.2 storage. Sony’s USB guidance also allows USB extended storage to be selected as the installation location for PS4 games. Available choices depend on the storage connected and the game platform. Menu wording can vary by system software version or region, so use the labels shown on your console.

Choose the right storage option

Delete and redownload
Choose this when you rotate among games and would rather wait for a later download than keep every install on the console. Purchased games remain available in the library for redownload, according to Sony’s guidance.
USB extended storage
USB storage is useful as an archive for PS5 games and as playable storage for PS4 games. Sony’s support guidance is explicit: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” See Sony’s USB extended-storage guide for setup and requirements.

Compatible M.2 SSD
A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. Sony’s storage-solutions overview advertises expansion up to 8 TB with a compatible M.2 solid state drive; that is an advertised maximum, not a guarantee that every drive or console configuration will support that capacity. Check Sony’s current M.2 requirements and installation instructions before choosing a drive. No particular model or price is established here.
Move a PS5 game to USB for storage
- Open Game Library and highlight the game you want to move.
- Press the Options button, then choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the game or items, choose Move, and confirm.
- When you want to play a PS5 game archived on USB, move or copy it back to console storage or M.2 storage. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Formatting USB extended storage erases the drive. Sony warns that erased data cannot be recovered, so back up or remove any important files before formatting. Follow Sony’s setup guidance for the current process.

Keep game installs, saves, and captures separate
Game installation data, saved data, and screenshots or video clips have different storage rules. Sony’s storage guide lists PS5 game saves for cloud storage, PS4 game saves for cloud or USB, and screenshots and clips for USB; Sony ties cloud storage to PlayStation Plus. Check the storage category and Sony’s current options before deleting anything beyond a game install. Sony’s storage-management page has the relevant breakdown.
