Gears of War: E-Day was announced on June 9, 2024, during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. Its in-engine reveal trailer introduced a mainline origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War, following younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust first emerge on Sera.
When and where was Gears of War: E-Day announced?
The Coalition unveiled Gears of War: E-Day as a surprise announcement during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024. The announcement was accompanied by an official in-engine trailer. Xbox Wire’s reveal-day report identifies the event as the Xbox Games Showcase 2024.

The distinction matters: the game was revealed during Xbox’s showcase, not during Geoff Keighley’s separate Summer Game Fest showcase. “At Summer Game Fest” can describe the broader event period, but the specific presentation was the Xbox Games Showcase.
What is E-Day about?
E-Day means Emergence Day: the first Locust emergence on the planet Sera. The game is set 14 years before the original Gears of War and centers on younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as they face the invasion. The Coalition described the story as an origin for the franchise’s world and its central friendship.

The Coalition called E-Day a new entry in the mainline series, set earlier in its timeline—not a spin-off. Creative Director Matt Searcy explained the significance of the event: “Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.”
What did the reveal say about gameplay and tone?
Xbox Wire described the game as returning to the series’ third-person, cover-based action while presenting Marcus and Dom as younger and more vulnerable than in the later-timeline games. They are encountering the Locust for the first time, giving the familiar action a new story context. These points describe the studio’s stated intent; the announcement itself was not an independent gameplay review.

Searcy said the team focused on qualities associated with the franchise: “We realized that a lot of the words we use to describe the franchise were what our fans also use, phrases like brotherhood, brutality, pathos, awe,” says Searcy. He also described the project as a fresh series entry: “It’s going to feel like a new Gears game, because that’s what it is,” Searcy says.
What did The Coalition say about the technology?
The reveal trailer was labeled in-engine and powered by Unreal Engine 5. Xbox Wire reported that The Coalition said the game was rebuilt from the ground up, with over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5. That figure is the studio’s claim, not an independently measured benchmark.

The Coalition also cited hardware ray-traced lighting, reflections and shadows, alongside destruction, gore and animation technology. Studio Technical Director Kate Rayner said, “Our ambition is, once again, to set a new standard in technical excellence,” Rayner adds. These are descriptions of the developers’ goals and technology—not verified performance results on retail hardware.

The original June 2024 reveal established the premise, series position and technical ambitions, but not the game’s eventual release and platform details. The current Xbox product page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists The Coalition as developer, Xbox Game Studios as publisher, Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 as platforms, an October 6, 2026 release date, and Game Pass availability.
In a separate June 8, 2026 announcement, The Coalition detailed a physical Xbox Series X Collector’s Edition. Its listed contents include the game disc, a 15-inch statue, replica COG tags, a SteelBook, an in-game photograph replica and an art print. The edition announcement said it would be offered through the Xbox Game Studios Shop and select retailers, with limited quantities and regional availability varying; retail stock and terms may change. The Xbox product page also lists an official limited-edition E-Day Xbox Wireless Controller.
