Then update the game and graphics driver, verify the installed files, and follow the instructions for any error code shown. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes: the right cause depends on your edition, hardware, launcher, and symptoms.
First, identify the crash
Before changing settings, note the details that determine which fixes apply:
- Edition: GTA V Enhanced or GTA V Legacy.
- Windows version and PC hardware: include the CPU, graphics card, RAM, and whether the game is installed on an SSD or HDD.
- Launcher: Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher.
- When it fails: before the game menu, during Story Mode, or only in GTA Online.
- Exact error: record the full message or code, or take a screenshot.
Use the error-specific section below if you see a named error. Otherwise, begin with the general checks.
Run the general checks
Rockstar’s GTAV PC crash, freeze, or installation troubleshooting article, last updated October 7, 2025, recommends these checks:

- Connect to the internet and start the game so it can receive the latest available patch.
- Update your graphics driver using the driver available for your specific GPU.
- Verify the game files in the launcher where you installed the game. Use that launcher’s built-in verification option for Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher. This checks for damaged or missing files without requiring you to guess which files to replace.
When an error mentions DirectX or Visual C++
If the error specifically points to Visual C++, Direct3D, or DirectX, Rockstar advises running the relevant installers in the game’s Redistributables folder. The default Rockstar Games Launcher installation path is C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto VRedistributables; if you installed the game elsewhere, look in that installation’s corresponding folder.
Check for software interference
Rockstar also recommends checking whether antivirus software is interfering with the game. If you temporarily change protection settings to test this, restore them immediately afterward. Do not leave antivirus disabled as a permanent fix. For related Rockstar Games Launcher details, inspect DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAVlauncher.log.

Check requirements for your edition
Enhanced and Legacy have different system requirements. Compare your PC with the list for the edition you actually installed; meeting minimum specifications is not a guarantee against crashes. Rockstar’s requirements article was last updated December 10, 2025, and cautions that requirements can change and that some unlisted, integrated, or mobile graphics hardware may be incompatible or unsupported. If Enhanced is installed on a system without the required SSD or storage capacity, address that requirement before treating the drive as a general crash fix. Rockstar does not state that adding an SSD resolves arbitrary crashes. Legacy’s listed minimum storage is an HDD.

Use the fix that matches the error
ERR_GFX_STATE
For ERR_GFX_STATE, Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE troubleshooting recommends this sequence:
- Update the graphics driver. If it is already current and the error continues, try an earlier driver version.
- In the game, open Settings > Graphics > Advanced Settings and change the Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12.
- If needed, run the game as administrator and disable fullscreen optimizations in the game executable’s Properties > Compatibility settings.
D3DERR_DEVICELOST
Rockstar says that “D3DERR_DEVICELOST errors are usually caused by an issue with the graphics drivers on the system.” Its D3DERR_DEVICELOST troubleshooting article, last updated April 26, 2024, recommends updating or clean-installing the graphics drivers. This guidance is specific to that error.

“An instance of Grand Theft Auto V Legacy is already running”
Rockstar says this message can appear if a game process is still open, you try to use more than one launcher, or the game or launcher lacks administrator privileges. Restart the PC, check Task Manager for a lingering GTA V process, and launch the game through the same launcher you used to install it. Rockstar’s Legacy already-running error instructions cover this message.
GTA Online will not launch because of BattlEye
Use this path only when the problem involves GTA Online or BattlEye; it is not a general solution for Story Mode crashes. Rockstar’s BattlEye troubleshooting instructions advise you to:

- Confirm BattlEye is enabled in Rockstar Games Launcher settings.
- Clear launch arguments or options in Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher.
- Start the game from its platform launcher, not a desktop shortcut or command prompt.
- Check whether antivirus software is interfering, and review its exceptions.
- Check for graphics modifications: Rockstar identifies ReShade and Special_K as having known BattlEye issues that can prevent launch or cause them to work incorrectly.
If GTA V says it is running but will not open
If there is no named error, but the launcher claims the game is already running, use the restart and Task Manager checks in the Legacy error section before changing graphics settings. Also avoid launching the same installation through multiple launchers; Rockstar lists multiple launchers as one possible cause of the “already running” message.
Prepare useful information for Rockstar Support
If the steps above do not resolve the problem, collect the details Rockstar asks for before contacting Rockstar PC troubleshooting support:
- The exact error text or code and a screenshot, if available.
- Your DxDiag and MSInfo reports.
- The relevant launcher and game logs.
For Rockstar Games Launcher problems, prelauncher.log and launcher.log are in DocumentsRockstar GamesLauncher. When using another launcher, Rockstar lists the game log under DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV. Include whether the crash occurs before the menu, in Story Mode, or only in GTA Online, along with your edition and launcher; that helps support distinguish between the applicable troubleshooting paths.
