His comments describe platform fit and the honor of making an Xbox flagship—not a claim that exclusivity proves the game’s quality. The announced platforms include PC as well as Xbox consoles.
What did the Gears of War: E-Day developer say about exclusivity?
In a June 19, 2026 interview with TechRadar, The Coalition creative director Matt Searcy said he had not discussed a PlayStation 5 release and that Gears as an exclusive made sense to him because of the franchise’s close association with Xbox.
“I would say that Gears as an exclusive makes a ton of sense to me, thinking about how tightly […] Gears has been tied to the Xbox brand [for] its entire life.”
The ellipsis and bracketed clarification are part of the quote as reported by TechRadar. Searcy also called the game’s place among Xbox’s flagship titles an honor and an exciting prospect, while noting that developers want people to play their games. Asked about the potential effect on audience size, he said, “we’re not too concerned about the size of the audience.”

Does exclusivity show the quality of the developers’ work?
Not on the evidence of Searcy’s reported remarks. He spoke about the franchise’s Xbox identity, his excitement about its flagship role, and confidence about audience size. He did not say that exclusivity demonstrates the quality of the team’s work, and the interview does not establish a cause-and-effect link between platform exclusivity and game quality.
Xbox executive Matt Booty gave a separate platform-holder rationale: exclusives can give players a reason to buy an Xbox or become Xbox fans, and reward long-time Xbox supporters. That is Xbox management’s explanation, not Searcy’s statement about the game’s quality.

What is E-Day, and what has the studio said about its development?
Xbox describes E-Day as an origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde emerges. The Coalition says it built the game from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, creating new assets and animation rather than porting them from earlier entries. Those development details provide context for the team’s work, but they do not make exclusivity a measure of quality. See Xbox Wire’s overview of how E-Day renews the franchise.
A June 10, 2026 GamesBeat briefing recap reported four-player co-op and two-player split-screen co-op. Those are reported briefing details; consult current official materials for confirmed feature specifications.
