The two sensible ways to play Gears of War
There is no single “correct” order because the series has two different structures. Release order is the best default for a newcomer: it preserves the twists, character introductions and changing gameplay priorities that the developers presented to players. Chronological order begins with E-Day and follows the history of Sera from the Locust emergence onward, but that approach can reveal information that the original games deliberately withhold.

The practical starting point is now Gears of War: Reloaded. It is the remastered version of the first game, so you get the original saga’s opening without buying an older release. The recommended core route is:
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
- Gears of War: Reloaded
- Gears of War 2
- Gears of War 3
- Gears of War 4
- Gears 5
Add Judgment and Tactics after that run if you want more early-war context. Insert E-Day at the beginning only for a chronology-first playthrough.
Every Gears game in story chronology
The chronology below follows the setting rather than the year each game was sold. The dates and relative gaps come from Space.com’s guide updated October 14, 2026.
| Story position | Game | Where it fits | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gears of War: E-Day | The Emergence Day origin story. It depicts the Locust Horde surfacing in Kalona six weeks after the 79-year Pendulum Wars ended, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fighting to survive. | Mainline third-person shooter |
| 2 | Gears of War: Judgment | A flashback-framed campaign about Damon Baird and Augustus “Cole Train” Cole during the early Locust War. | Third-person shooter spin-off |
| 3 | Gears Tactics | A squad-based strategy campaign set roughly one year after Emergence Day. | Turn-based strategy spin-off |
| 4 | Gears of War | Fourteen years after Emergence Day, Marcus returns to the COG and the central saga begins. | Mainline third-person shooter |
| 5 | Gears of War 2 | Continues after the Lightmass Offensive and escalates the war beneath and above ground. | Mainline third-person shooter |
| 6 | Gears of War 3 | Set three years after Jacinto’s sinking and concludes the original trilogy’s war. | Mainline third-person shooter |
| 7 | Gears of War 4 | Jumps 25 years beyond the original trilogy’s war and introduces the next generation of characters. | Mainline third-person shooter |
| 8 | Gears 5 | Takes place months after Gears of War 4. | Mainline third-person shooter |
E-Day is therefore the chronological beginning, but not necessarily the best first experience. Its origin-story position means it can explain events and relationships that earlier releases expected players to discover gradually.
Release order, including the current first-game version
The franchise’s original release sequence was:
| Release year | Game | Why it matters for a first playthrough |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 | Gears of War | Established the cover-shooter combat, COG–Locust conflict and Marcus Fenix’s role. |
| 2008 | Gears of War 2 | Expanded the campaign’s scale and followed the Lightmass Offensive. |
| 2011 | Gears of War 3 | Completed the original trilogy’s central war. |
| 2013 | Gears of War: Judgment | Provided an early-war side story through Baird and Cole. |
| 2015 | Gears of War: Ultimate Edition | Remastered the first game before the next-generation entries. |
| 2016 | Gears of War 4 | Moved the timeline 25 years forward and began a new cast’s arc. |
| 2019 | Gears 5 | Continued that newer storyline only months after its predecessor. |
| 2020 | Gears Tactics | Revisited the early war in a squad-strategy format. |
| 2026 | Gears of War: E-Day | Returned to the series’ origin point as a full prequel campaign. |
For current purchases, substitute Reloaded for the 2006 original or the 2015 Ultimate Edition. The narrative starting point remains the same, while the remaster is easier to access on modern hardware.

Why release order is the safest recommendation
It protects the series’ reveals
The original trilogy was written as a progression from Marcus’s return through the Lightmass Offensive and the fall of Jacinto. Later games assume you know what the earlier games established. Starting with a prequel can turn discoveries into background information and make character introductions feel less significant.
It keeps the main gameplay language consistent
The five core entries are third-person shooters built around cover, coordinated movement, close-range weapons and set-piece campaigns. Playing them in release sequence lets you see those systems evolve without switching immediately to the very different squad tactics of Gears Tactics.
It gives the story a clean handoff
Reloaded leads directly into Gears of War 2, then Gears of War 3. After the original trilogy, Gears of War 4 makes its 25-year time jump clear, and Gears 5 follows only months later. You can therefore finish the principal arc without pausing for a prequel or genre change.

Yes. The official Xbox description places E-Day fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus and Dom as the Locust first erupt from below, making it the earliest point in the numbered saga’s history.

- HD Gaming's New Standard Innovative controls and unmatched intensity made Gears of War one of the best-selling Xbox 360 games ever
- Breakthrough advances in Unreal Engine 3 raise the bar again

Choose E-Day first when your priority is to watch the war develop from its first day in chronological order, or when you have already played the earlier games and want to revisit their foundation. Choose Reloaded first when this is your introduction and you want the reveals in the order the audience originally received them.
What Reloaded changes—and what it does not
Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original game. Xbox Wire and The Coalition announced a $39.99 suggested retail price at its August 26, 2025 launch. It includes the Ultimate Edition‘s bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps, modes, characters and cosmetics at no additional cost.
The remaster supports two-player campaign co-op, cross-play and cross-progression. It is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam. Those features make it the most flexible entry point for players who want to campaign with a friend or move between supported systems.
It does not change the game’s place in the story: it is still the first Gears campaign. Treat it as the modern edition of that opening chapter, not as a new sequel or a replacement for the events of Gears 2.

Do you need Judgment or Tactics?
Gears of War: Judgment
Judgment is optional for understanding the mainline sequence. Its flashback structure centers on Baird and Cole during the early Locust War, so it adds character and historical context rather than filling a gap you must cross to follow Marcus’s main arc.
Play it after the five core shooters if you want an additional action campaign, or after E-Day if you are deliberately following the earliest-war period. Keeping it outside the first run also prevents its framing device from interrupting the main trilogy’s momentum.
Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics is also optional, and its difference is more than its position on the timeline. It is a squad-based strategy game set roughly one year after E-Day, with turn-based planning replacing the series’ normal third-person shooting rhythm.
Choose it when you enjoy managing a squad, equipment and tactical turns. If you are playing specifically for the cover-shooter campaigns, leave it until after the mainline games. Chronology-focused players can place it after Judgment and before the original Gears of War.

Three play plans that fit different readers
First-time player who wants the intended experience
- Play Gears of War: Reloaded.
- Continue with Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3.
- Play Gears of War 4, then Gears 5.
- Return to Judgment, Tactics and E-Day as optional historical side trips.
Chronology-first player
- Start with E-Day.
- Play Judgment and then Gears Tactics.
- Move to Reloaded, followed by Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5.
This route is coherent as a historical timeline, but it intentionally gives you prequel information before the original game can reveal it.
Shooter-focused player with limited time
Play only Reloaded, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. Skip the spin-offs until you know whether you want more of the universe or a different genre. This five-game route contains the complete mainline shooter progression.

Common ordering mistakes
- Starting with the oldest available copy: the 2006 game is historically important, but Reloaded is the current remastered entry with additional Ultimate Edition content.
- Assuming chronological means best: E-Day comes first in the timeline, yet release order better preserves the franchise’s intended reveals for most newcomers.
- Treating every title as mandatory: Judgment and Tactics add context, but neither is required before Gears 2 or Gears 4.
- Expecting Tactics to play like the shooters: it is a squad-based strategy campaign, so movement, combat decisions and pacing work differently.
- Relying on an old subscription listing: Game Pass catalogs, cloud availability and retailer prices are not permanent.
Bottom line for a new player
Buy or access Gears of War: Reloaded first, then follow the numbered mainline games through Gears 5. That path is the clearest introduction and protects the story’s original escalation. Once you finish, use E-Day for the origin story, Judgment for an early-war character campaign and Gears Tactics for a strategy-focused view of the same conflict.
