The GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER was a 2019 midrange graphics card aimed at high-fidelity 1080p gaming. Its defining change from the original GTX 1660 was faster memory: 6GB of GDDR6 at 14 Gbps, which NVIDIA rated at 336 GB/s of peak bandwidth. That was a substantial bandwidth increase, but NVIDIA’s “up to 20%” performance claim was a launch claim—not a promise for every game or PC. Independent reviews tested the card at launch, but their results belong to their own games, settings, systems, and drivers.
What the GTX 1660 SUPER was designed to do
NVIDIA announced the GTX 1660 SUPER on October 29, 2019, describing it as a Turing-based card for high-fidelity gaming at 1920×1080. The company’s November 2019 GeForce article listed an original launch MSRP of $229. That figure describes the card’s launch positioning in 2019; it is not a current price or a guide to what a used or new card should cost now.
At launch, NVIDIA framed the SUPER as a way to improve the GTX 1660 without changing its basic GPU configuration. PC Gamer’s October 29, 2019 review likewise described the card as retaining the standard GTX 1660’s GPU core counts and clockspeeds while changing the memory. The upgrade was therefore focused: more memory bandwidth, rather than a wholly different GPU.
GTX 1660 versus GTX 1660 SUPER: the key specification change
| Specification | GeForce GTX 1660 | GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER |
|---|---|---|
| Memory capacity | 6GB | 6GB GDDR6, as described by NVIDIA at launch |
| Memory type and speed | GDDR5 at 8 Gbps, per NVIDIA’s launch comparison | GDDR6 at 14 Gbps, per NVIDIA’s launch materials |
| Peak memory bandwidth | 192 GB/s, per NVIDIA’s launch comparison | 336 GB/s, per NVIDIA’s launch materials |
| GPU core counts and clockspeeds | Baseline configuration | PC Gamer reported these were retained from the standard GTX 1660 at launch |
NVIDIA described the move from 192 GB/s to 336 GB/s as a 75% increase in peak memory bandwidth. That specification change is concrete; its effect on frame rates depends on the game, graphics settings, resolution, and the rest of the system.

What NVIDIA claimed about performance
NVIDIA said the GTX 1660 SUPER could deliver up to 20% higher frame rates than the original GTX 1660. “Up to” matters: it is a vendor comparison, not a result that applies uniformly to every title or configuration. NVIDIA also announced an “up to 1.5×” comparison with the GTX 1060 6GB specifically in Rainbow Six Siege. That named-game claim should not be read as a general average across games.
NVIDIA’s November 2019 article also cited historical audience figures to explain the 1080p focus: a 63% 1920×1080 display figure attributed to Valve’s Steam Hardware Survey, and an 80% figure for GeForce users on a GTX 1060 or older attributed to NVIDIA data. Those were figures reported by NVIDIA in 2019, not current measurements of player hardware.

What launch-era independent reviews tested
TechSpot: a 17-game test suite
TechSpot’s October 29, 2019 review tested 17 games at 1080p and 1440p. This gives useful launch-era context for the card’s intended resolutions, but the available review summary does not establish a single frame-rate result that can stand in for all those games. Results from a multi-game suite vary with the title and its settings, and should be read in the context of TechSpot’s test system and methods rather than treated as universal performance figures.
Power observation in TechSpot’s test
In its own comparison, TechSpot measured total system draw 9% higher with the GTX 1660 SUPER than with the standard GTX 1660, and attributed a power cost to the faster-clocked GDDR6. This is a review-specific measurement of total system draw, not a guaranteed difference for every PC or every partner card.

PC Gamer: memory-focused launch review
PC Gamer also published its review on October 29, 2019. It described the card as keeping the vanilla GTX 1660’s GPU core counts and clockspeeds while adopting GDDR6, and conducted its testing with launch-era drivers and its own game and benchmark methods. Its findings should not be merged with TechSpot’s as though both outlets used one common test system or identical conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, did it deliver “turbo charged” 1080p gaming?
As a launch-era product, the GTX 1660 SUPER had a clear 1080p brief and a meaningful memory-bandwidth upgrade over the GTX 1660. NVIDIA’s specifications explain why the card was positioned as a faster alternative, while TechSpot and PC Gamer provide independent launch-period testing context. The evidence here does not support a universal frame-rate promise: the result for an individual game depends on its workload, chosen settings, resolution, PC configuration, and the review’s test conditions.
