The strongest documented differences are in animation, player detail, and overall presentation, not a verified resolution or frame-rate figure.
Two different editions, built for different generations
NBA 2K21 launched on PS4 as a current-generation game, then received a distinct PS5 edition positioned by 2K as built from the ground up for next-generation consoles. The PS4-versus-PS5 comparison is therefore a look at separate generation-specific versions, not simply one game displayed at two resolutions. 2K’s next-generation announcement set out that positioning.

The PS4 edition was available on September 4, 2020. 2K announced PS5 launch dates of November 12, 2020, in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, and November 19, 2020, in other regions. Those are historical launch dates, not indications of current availability.
What the comparison footage shows
PS4 Pro versus PS5, with HDR examples
Operation Sports’ comparison places PS4 Pro and PS5 footage alongside each other and includes HDR-on and HDR-off examples. It can help viewers see differences in the captured presentation, but the comparison’s creator says the HDR gameplay image appeared over-saturated or overexposed and that color correction was applied to make the footage more comparable. That is a caveat about this video’s capture and processing; it does not establish that HDR generally makes the game look worse.

Character detail and animation
In a separate comparison, GameSpot describes recreating a PS5 trailer shot for shot with the PS4 edition. Its editorial observations point to more pronounced sweat detail in the PS5 footage and generally improved animations and graphics. Those are descriptions of the specific footage, rather than measurements that apply to every scene or display.
Why foot planting matters
Visual Concepts identified movement as a key part of the generational change. In the PlayStation Blog gameplay deep dive, the developer said: “Our engineers re-wrote our foot planting tech from scratch and it led to one of the most striking visual improvements when you put current gen side-by-side with next gen.” Foot planting affects how a player’s feet meet and push off the floor during movement; the developer’s point is that more convincing contact can make motion look more grounded. This is a developer claim about the technology and its visual impact, not an independent measurement.

What this video cannot establish
A side-by-side capture is useful for judging the examples it contains, but it is not a universal image-quality test. The available comparison material does not provide a controlled resolution, frame-rate, or image-quality benchmark. Differences in HDR settings, capture, color correction, and display can also affect how footage appears.
- Reasonable takeaway: the PS5 footage is presented as a generational visual upgrade, with the cited comparisons calling attention to animation and player detail.
- Not established by these clips: a specific frame rate, resolution advantage, or consistent result in every match and viewing setup.
- For your own comparison: use the same display and picture settings where possible, and treat HDR-on and HDR-off footage as separate viewing conditions.
Which edition included access to both generations?
2K described the Mamba Forever Edition as the dual-access route to current- and next-generation editions within the same PlayStation or Xbox family. It also described same-family MyTEAM cross-progression and a shared VC wallet. That does not mean every PS4 edition included a PS5 copy; check the edition and platform terms rather than assuming a standard PS4 purchase carries forward. 2K’s next-generation availability announcement covers the dual-access details, while its September 4, 2020 launch announcement describes the current-generation release.
