The two GPUs occupy essentially the same 1440p performance class. The RTX 5070’s advantages are Blackwell architecture, DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, newer ray-tracing hardware, GDDR7, PCIe 5, and newer video features. The RTX 4070 Super counters with lower rated power consumption and often a much better price.
For US buyers, the price gap matters more than the generation number. As of August 16, 2026, RTX 5070 retail pricing was volatile, with some observed listings around $755–$800. At that price, a discounted RTX 4070 Super or a 16 GB alternative may be the smarter purchase.

RTX 4070 Super vs. RTX 5070: quick verdict
| Buyer situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Buying new near the RTX 5070’s $549 MSRP | RTX 5070 |
| RTX 4070 Super is $100–$150 cheaper | RTX 4070 Super |
| Already own an RTX 4070 Super | Keep it, unless DLSS 4 is a priority |
| Mostly native 1440p gaming | Whichever card is cheaper |
| Ray tracing and supported DLSS 4 games | RTX 5070 |
| Video work involving 4:2:2 footage | RTX 5070 |
| Long-term 4K or high-resolution texture use | Neither by default; consider a 16 GB GPU |
The RTX 5070 is approximately 1–3% faster than the RTX 4070 Super in the cited independent comparison, although results vary by game and settings. That is a near-tie, not a generational leap. TechRadar’s comparison also identifies DLSS 4 as the main reason to choose the newer card.

Gaming performance: a near-tie without generated frames
Rasterized gaming
In traditional rasterized rendering, the RTX 5070 has only a small advantage over the RTX 4070 Super in available comparison coverage—roughly 1–3%, with some workloads allowing the older card to lead. The exact result depends on the game engine, resolution, driver, CPU, and settings.
That makes both cards strong choices for high-refresh-rate 1440p gaming. If you play competitive games at native resolution, the RTX 4070 Super may deliver essentially the same experience for less money. NVIDIA’s frequently cited “20% faster” figure should not be used for this comparison: it is NVIDIA’s claim against the regular RTX 4070, not the RTX 4070 Super. NVIDIA’s announcement states that comparison baseline explicitly.
Ray-traced gaming
The RTX 5070 is the stronger technical choice for ray tracing because it has fourth-generation RT cores rather than the 4070 Super’s third-generation units. The difference is most useful in games that also support the RTX 5070’s newer neural-rendering features. In titles without meaningful Blackwell optimization or DLSS 4 support, the practical lead can still be modest.

The RTX 5070 is therefore better positioned for new ray-traced games, but it is not automatically a 4K ultra GPU. Both cards may require upscaling, reduced ray-tracing settings, or lower texture settings in demanding releases.
1440p and 4K
At 1440p, both GPUs are well matched to high-quality gaming, particularly when the CPU is fast enough and settings are balanced. At 4K, the 12 GB memory capacity becomes more important: neither card has the headroom of a comparable 16 GB alternative, especially with ultra textures, heavy ray tracing, high-resolution mods, or future games.
CPU-limited games can erase the already small difference between these GPUs. If your system cannot feed the graphics card quickly enough, paying extra for the RTX 5070 will not produce a meaningful native frame-rate increase.
DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is the RTX 5070’s main advantage
The RTX 4070 Super supports the DLSS 3.5 feature set, including Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and ordinary Frame Generation. The RTX 5070 supports DLSS 4, including Multi Frame Generation, a feature unavailable on RTX 40-series GPUs. NVIDIA lists the RTX 4070 Super’s feature set here, while its RTX 5070 specifications document DLSS 4 support.
Recommended Free Tools
- Native frame rate: frames rendered directly by the GPU.
- DLSS Super Resolution: the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image.
- Frame Generation: an additional interpolated frame is created between traditionally rendered frames.
- Multi Frame Generation: multiple generated frames can be inserted between traditionally rendered frames.
Multi Frame Generation can make the displayed FPS counter much higher in supported games, particularly demanding single-player titles with ray tracing. But generated frames are not equivalent to doubling the number of natively rendered frames. The experience depends on the underlying frame rate, CPU performance, latency, image quality, artifacts, and game integration.
It is most persuasive when the GPU already produces a sufficiently strong base frame rate and you want smoother motion in a supported cinematic game. It is less compelling for esports players who prioritize native rendering, very low latency, and predictable image response. Do not pay a large premium for a larger FPS number without checking whether your games support the feature and whether you like the result. NVIDIA says DLSS 4 integrations continue to expand, but support remains game-dependent. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 overview.

VRAM: both cards have the same limitation
Both GPUs include 12 GB of VRAM. The RTX 5070’s GDDR7 is newer and improves the memory technology and bandwidth characteristics, but it does not increase usable capacity.
That is enough for much 1440p gaming with sensible texture settings. It can become restrictive at 4K, with ultra texture packs, extensive ray tracing, high-resolution mods, or creator workloads that keep large assets in memory. A future game exceeding the available capacity may stutter or require lower textures regardless of whether the card is an RTX 4070 Super or RTX 5070.
Neither GPU should be called obsolete solely because it has 12 GB, but buyers seeking several years of uncompromised 4K gaming should consider a 16 GB card instead. This is also why the RTX 5070 is not automatically more “future-proof”: its feature support is newer, while its VRAM capacity is unchanged.
Creators, AI, and video encoding
The RTX 5070’s newer Tensor and media hardware gives it the feature advantage for modern AI and video workflows. NVIDIA says the card includes ninth-generation NVENC and hardware-accelerated 4:2:2 support, and claims substantially faster 4:2:2 export performance than the RTX 4070. Those speed figures are NVIDIA’s claims, not independent test results. NVIDIA’s announcement provides the vendor details.
Choose the RTX 5070 if your editing workflow specifically involves supported 4:2:2 footage or you need the newest NVIDIA AI and encoding features. For CUDA-based applications, both cards remain viable NVIDIA options, and the benefit of changing from a 4070 Super depends on the exact application rather than the product name.
Power, connectors, and case compatibility
NVIDIA rates the RTX 4070 Super at 220 W total graphics power and the RTX 5070 at 250 W. Both reference designs carry a 650 W recommended system-power figure, but that is not a universal guarantee: CPU choice, overclocking, PSU quality, and transient behavior also matter.

Board-partner models may differ. Before buying, verify:
- the exact card’s length, height, and slot thickness;
- the location of its power connector and the side-panel cable clearance;
- whether your PSU has a suitable native cable or the required adapter;
- the manufacturer’s recommended PSU rating;
- the cooler, warranty, BIOS limits, and return policy.
The reference lengths are similar—approximately 244 mm for the RTX 4070 Super and 242 mm for the RTX 5070—but those figures do not guarantee that a partner card will fit. An MSI Ventus, Gaming X Slim, Founders Edition, or another model can have different dimensions, noise characteristics, factory settings, and pricing. NVIDIA warns that specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer.

The RTX 5070 launched at $549, while the RTX 4070 Super launched at $599. That makes the newer card attractive when it is actually available near $549. However, as of August 16, 2026, US pricing was volatile. PC Gamer’s price-watch coverage listed an RTX 5070 around $755 and cited other listings near $790–$800; Tom’s Hardware reported that the median RTX 5070 price on Newegg had risen by roughly 36% in August.

These are dated market signals, not permanent prices. Check the exact retailer, model, stock status, shipping cost, tax treatment, rebate terms, and return policy immediately before purchasing. Limited MSRP events have shown that $549 RTX 5070 stock can exist, but that does not mean it is consistently available. NVIDIA’s official marketplace is one place to check current listings. For older 4070 Super cards, partner, refurbished, and used inventory may be more realistic than direct NVIDIA stock.

- RTX 5070 at or near $549: buy the RTX 5070 for a new build.
- RTX 5070 within about $50 of an RTX 4070 Super: prefer the RTX 5070’s newer features.
- RTX 4070 Super at least $100–$150 cheaper: choose it for native 1440p value.
- RTX 5070 around $700–$800: compare carefully with discounted 4070 Super cards and 16 GB alternatives.
Should you consider the Radeon RX 9070?
If the RTX 5070 is heavily inflated, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 deserves attention because it offers 16 GB of VRAM and can be a strong conventional-gaming alternative. PC Gamer’s August 2026 market coverage described the RX 9070 as undercutting the RTX 5070 while outperforming it in its cited market context, but its exact current price should be rechecked.
NVIDIA remains the safer fit for buyers who specifically need DLSS, CUDA-dependent software, Broadcast, or certain creator applications. Ray-tracing and upscaling results should be judged from the games and applications you actually use rather than assumed from brand reputation. See AMD’s official RX 9070 page.
Final recommendations by scenario
Building a new gaming PC
Buy the RTX 5070 if it is close to $549 or only modestly more expensive than the RTX 4070 Super. You get similar native performance with a newer feature set.
Already own an RTX 4070 Super
Keep it. The native performance improvement is too small to make a routine upgrade worthwhile. Move to the RTX 5070 only if DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, newer ray-tracing support, or a specific creator feature solves a real problem for you.
Seeking the cheapest high-refresh 1440p option
Choose whichever card is meaningfully cheaper. For native rasterized gaming, the RTX 4070 Super can offer the better price-to-performance ratio.
Prioritizing ray tracing and DLSS 4
Choose the RTX 5070, provided the price is reasonable and your games support the features.
Prioritizing 4K longevity
Look beyond this matchup. Both cards’ 12 GB capacity can require compromises in demanding future games, so a well-priced 16 GB alternative may be a better long-term purchase.
