Gemini is becoming a gaming assistant on Google Play, not an autonomous player. In the Gemini app on Android, it can help you find and install games. In supported games installed from Google Play, Play Games Sidekick can open an overlay with game information, AI-generated tips, and—where available—conversational guidance through Gemini Live.
It does not generally press buttons, control your character, or complete levels for you. The player still makes the decisions and controls the game.

Two different Google gaming features are involved
Google’s Gemini gaming features are easy to confuse because they connect the same services but serve different purposes.

Google describes Sidekick as using Gemini Live’s screen-sharing capabilities to understand what is happening in a game and provide contextual guidance. That means Gemini can react to visible game content, but its interpretation may be incomplete or wrong.

Fast-moving action, tiny text, unusual interfaces, obscure games, and visually ambiguous situations can all reduce the quality of the advice. Treat the suggestions as assistance rather than authoritative instructions—especially in ranked matches, paid content, or situations involving irreversible choices.
Google announced Sidekick and its Gemini Live integration in 2025, while later updates described AI-generated Game Tips and availability in select games.
What Gemini can—and cannot—do
It can
- Recommend games based on genre, device, or play style.
- Find a specific game’s Google Play listing.
- Help open the Play Store installation or purchase flow.
- Offer contextual tips in supported games through Play Games Sidekick.
- Provide Gemini Live conversation while the game remains visible, where the feature is available.
- Show Play Games information such as achievements, quests, leagues, rewards, and Play Points offers.
- Provide access to screenshots, screen recording, Do Not Disturb controls, YouTube livestreaming, and game-related videos through the Sidekick overlay.
It cannot be assumed to
- Control every Google Play game.
- Beat levels or farm resources autonomously.
- Work with every free or paid game.
- Give perfect, expert-level advice.
- Complete every in-app purchase through a conversation.
- Work identically on Android, iPhone, the web, and PC.
Google’s official descriptions focus on tips, support, information, and guidance—not a universal AI agent that plays games on the user’s behalf.

- Open the Gemini app on an Android phone or tablet.
- Sign in with the personal Google Account used for Google Play.
- Ask for a game. For example:
Download [game name]Find games like [game name]Recommend a strategy game for my phone
- If Google Play is not connected, follow Gemini’s prompt to connect it.
- Tap the suggested game.
- Gemini opens the game’s Google Play details page.
- Tap Install or the displayed purchase price.
- Complete any normal Google Play confirmation, payment, or account-verification steps.
Gemini does not necessarily install a game silently just because you said “install.” In many cases, it surfaces the listing and hands the process to Google Play, where you must confirm the installation or purchase.
Google’s Google Play connected-app documentation also says the feature can find selected in-app items and gift cards. Not every app supports those purchase workflows, and in-app recommendations are limited to apps installed on the device.
How to use Play Games Sidekick while playing
- Create or sign in to a Play Games profile in the Google Play Store.
- Install a supported game from Google Play.
- Launch the game.
- Look for the small floating Sidekick handle on the edge of the screen.
- Drag the handle toward the center of the screen.
- Open the available tools, including game information and, where offered, Game Tips or Gemini Live guidance.
- To move the handle, press and hold it, then drag it along the edge of the display.
Google also says Sidekick can be accessed through a persistent notification instead of the floating handle. The exact controls can vary by Android version, device manufacturer, language, Google Play version, and rollout status.

Requirements and availability
Google Play in Gemini
Google lists these requirements for connecting Google Play to Gemini:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You use an Android phone or tablet.
- The Google Play Store is installed.
- You use a personal Google Account.
- Keep Activity, Google’s name for Gemini activity history, is enabled.
- Gemini and Google Play use the same account, which Google recommends.
The feature is currently documented for the Gemini mobile app on Android, not as a general feature of Gemini on iOS or the web. Availability of particular games, apps, and digital products can vary by country, device, developer, account type, and rollout status.
Play Games Sidekick
Sidekick requires a Play Games profile, a supported game installed from Google Play, and the relevant Google account active in the Play Store. Google Play components may also need to be current. Seeing the Sidekick handle is the practical test: launch a supported game and check whether the floating control appears.

Google has promoted Sidekick as part of a broader Play strategy spanning mobile and PC, but that does not mean the Android Gemini workflow or Sidekick overlay is available in the same form on every platform.
Why the feature can be useful
- Getting unstuck: Ask for help with a puzzle, boss, quest, or objective without immediately leaving the game.
- Learning complicated systems: Menus, crafting, upgrades, and unfamiliar mechanics can be easier to understand with a conversational explanation.
- Discovering games: Natural-language recommendations can be faster than browsing categories manually.
- Keeping game information nearby: Achievements, rewards, videos, and recording tools are available from the Sidekick overlay.
The trade-off is convenience versus reliability. AI can reduce the need to search for a walkthrough, but a screen-based model may misunderstand the game state or provide generic advice.

Contextual guidance depends on Gemini receiving information about the game screen through Gemini Live’s screen-sharing capabilities. Before enabling connected features, review Google’s Connected Apps and privacy information. There is no basis for calling the feature universally “privacy-safe”; the relevant question is whether you are comfortable sharing that context under Google’s terms and settings.
Account consistency matters too. Sidekick’s achievements, quests, streaks, and other profile information may be wrong if the Play Games account differs from the account used inside the game.

To change the Play Games account:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Go to Settings → General → Play Games profile.
- Tap Sign in account, then Change.
- Select the correct account and tap Save.
How to turn Sidekick off
- Open the Sidekick overlay.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Show/Hide Play Sidekick.
- Alternatively, open the Google Play Store and go to Settings → General → Google Play Games.
- Turn off Show Play Sidekick.
Labels can differ slightly by Android version, device manufacturer, language, and Play Store version.
Troubleshooting
Google Play does not appear in Gemini
- Confirm you are using Android.
- Make sure the Play Store is installed.
- Use a personal Google Account rather than a managed or supervised account.
- Check that Gemini and Play Store use the same account.
- Confirm that Keep Activity is enabled.
- Check whether the feature is available in your country and account.
“Install” does not immediately install the game
This is expected in some cases. Gemini may only open the Play Store listing. Tap Install, approve the payment if necessary, and complete any verification or permission prompts in Google Play.
Sidekick does not appear
Check whether:
- The game is supported.
- The game was installed from Google Play.
- A Play Games profile is set up.
- The Play Store is using the intended Google Account.
- Sidekick is enabled in Play Store settings.
- The device and region have received the feature.
- Google Play components need updating.
Google does not promise a universal fix for every device or title, so an absent overlay may simply mean the game or account is not eligible yet.

Gemini gives poor advice
Ask a more specific question and describe the objective or visible obstacle. You can also ask for several possible approaches instead of accepting the first suggestion. For patch-specific mechanics, account problems, paid items, ranked play, or irreversible decisions, use the game’s official support or a conventional walkthrough as a fallback.
In-app purchases are unavailable
Not every app supports purchases through Google Play’s connected Gemini workflow. Selected in-app items and gift cards may be searchable, but availability is limited by the app, device, account, and region.
The bottom line
Gemini’s gaming push is best understood as a convenience layer and AI coach. It can help Android users discover games through Google Play, while Play Games Sidekick can provide information and contextual tips inside supported Play-installed games. It is not a universal game-playing bot, and its advice should be treated as a useful suggestion rather than a guaranteed solution.
