Gems are materials valued for beauty, rarity, and durability. Most are minerals, but not all: lapis lazuli is a rock, and amber is fossilized resin. To learn what a particular stone is, look beyond its color or appearance: gemologists identify stones by combining observation with tests of their properties.
What is a gem?
A gem is a material valued for being beautiful, rare, and durable. Many gems begin as rough material and are cut or otherwise fashioned for use in jewelry or decorative objects. Most gems are minerals, but the category is broader than minerals alone: lapis lazuli is a rock, while amber is fossilized resin. Pearls are also included in gem references, though they are not minerals.
Carat is the unit used to weigh gems. Weight alone does not establish a stone’s quality or value; identification and other characteristics matter too.
How are gems named and classified?
Gemologists group natural gems into species according to chemical composition and crystal structure. A variety is a more specific distinction within a species, often based on color, transparency, or an optical effect.

- Aquamarine is the light-blue variety of the species beryl.
This distinction helps explain why a gem name may describe either a broad material category or a particular appearance within that category. The color of a stone can help describe it, but color by itself does not prove its identity.
What is the difference between a synthetic gem and a simulant?
A synthetic gem is created in a laboratory and is the counterpart of a natural gem, with essentially the same composition, crystal structure, and properties. A simulant is a different material used to imitate a gem’s appearance. The terms are not interchangeable: one describes a lab-created counterpart, the other an imitation.

Treatments are another consideration. A gem may have been treated to alter or improve its appearance, so appearance alone may not reveal either how it was made or whether it has been treated.
How can you identify a gemstone?
Visual inspection can provide clues, but it is not a complete identification method. Different materials can look alike, and gems of the same species can vary in appearance. Gemologists combine observation with examination of a stone’s properties and, when needed, testing instruments.

For an initial look
- Record what you can observe, such as color, transparency, and visible features, without treating those observations as proof of identity.
- Compare the stone with reliable information about the suspected gem, including its varieties, treatments, and imitations.
- Use a field guide or educational reference to learn terminology and narrow down questions. A guide can support learning, but it cannot certify an unknown stone.
When a reliable identification matters
If identity or treatment could affect a purchase, appraisal, or other important decision, seek a qualified gemological examination rather than relying on an informal visual assessment. GIA describes a laboratory process that records measurements, uses microscopy and analytical testing, and sends the item to a second gemologist for independent testing. Other specialists may be involved depending on the item.

For a useful comparison between two stones, first establish what each stone is and whether it is natural, synthetic, treated, or a simulant. Then compare the traits relevant to your purpose, such as appearance and suitability for intended use, and consult the guidance for each specific gem. There is no universal ranking that makes one gem the best for every person or use.
