Gene Rain was poorly received by critics in the available reviews. Metacritic’s Xbox One critic page shows a score of 32 out of 100, based on nine reviews and labeled “Generally Unfavorable.” The main complaints concern the muddled story, weak dialogue and voice acting, and unsatisfying shooting and cover mechanics. That score is specific to the Xbox One listing, not a universal rating across platforms.
What the critic scores say
Metacritic’s Xbox One critic listing displayed a 32 Metascore from nine critics when checked in 2026. It labels the result “Generally Unfavorable.” The figure is an aggregator snapshot for the Xbox One version; it should not be read as a score for every edition or as a user rating. Individual reviews point in the same generally negative direction. Cyril Lachel gave the PlayStation 4 version 30% in a 2018 review for Defunct Games, criticizing its combat, voice work, story coherence, character writing, and ending. He summarized it as “At its best, Gene Rain is a monotonous third-person shooter with an ambitious story.” Read the Defunct Games review.
The available figures come from different platforms and sources, so they are not a like-for-like aggregate: Metacritic’s score combines nine Xbox One critic reviews, while Defunct Games’ 30% is one critic’s assessment of the PlayStation 4 version.

What critics disliked
A story that is hard to follow
Reviewers criticized the narrative as confusing or incoherent, with weak characterization and dialogue. The story’s ambition did not, in these accounts, translate into a clear or compelling experience. Voice acting and localization were also recurring concerns, though not every review raised every one of these issues.
Combat and cover that frustrate
The shooting was often described as shallow or monotonous. Critics also complained about the feel of the cover-and-shooting mechanics, including sluggish or broken-feeling interactions. These criticisms help explain why the game’s third-person shooter premise did not satisfy reviewers even when they acknowledged its ambition.

Rough presentation
Reviews also noted roughness in the game’s overall presentation. Taken together with the narrative and combat complaints, this gave critics little reason to overlook its technical and design shortcomings.
Why one response was much warmer
AJ Small’s GameCritics piece is a notable counterpoint: Small found the game’s awkwardness and ambition entertaining despite its flaws. However, the article is explicitly titled “This Is Not A Review” and presents itself as impressions and a recommendation, not a conventional critic review. It is best understood as an individual, knowingly subjective reaction rather than evidence that the broader critical response was positive. Read the GameCritics impressions.

Is Gene Rain worth considering?
The reviews suggest that Gene Rain is a poor fit for players seeking a polished shooter, dependable cover mechanics, or a clearly told story. Its appeal is more likely to be to players curious about a rough-edged game whose ambition and awkwardness may themselves be part of the experience. Small’s reaction shows that this kind of appeal exists, but it should not be mistaken for the critical consensus.
Gene Rain is a third-person shooter listed for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Metacritic gives July 31, 2018 as its initial release date; GameFAQs lists May 21, 2020 for the PC release, so those dates refer to different platform information. Metacritic game details · GameFAQs PC release details.
