Astra is the better default for most WordPress site owners in 2026. Its free version is more useful, its Starter Templates library is much larger, Spectra is included at no extra cost, and Astra Pro adds WooCommerce conversion tools that GeneratePress does not provide. Choose GeneratePress instead when you are building a custom Gutenberg site, rely heavily on hooks and filters, want the leanest possible foundation, or manage many client sites under its 500-site license. In a controlled mobile PageSpeed test reported by Astra, the themes were effectively tied: GeneratePress scored 82/100 and Astra 81/100, so hosting, caching, images, fonts and plugins matter more than the theme choice.
GeneratePress vs Astra at a glance
Both themes are lightweight, well-established choices for WordPress, and capable of producing fast sites. The meaningful difference is not basic rendering speed; it is how much each theme gives you before you add plugins, how you prefer to build pages, and whether your store needs conversion features beyond styling.

| Decision area | Astra | GeneratePress |
|---|---|---|
| Free version | Usable for a complete small site: header/footer builder, global colors and typography, basic WooCommerce support, and access to 300+ free starter templates | Deliberately minimal foundation; no bundled site library, starter templates or header builder |
| Starter sites | 400+ complete Starter Templates sites for the block editor, Spectra and Elementor | 80+ starter sites commonly listed for GP Premium; the current pricing page lists 60+ and should be treated as the current vendor figure |
| Block-building | Spectra is bundled free; Astra also works with the native block editor and other builders | Gutenberg-focused workflow; GenerateBlocks Pro is a separate product unless you buy GeneratePress One |
| WooCommerce | Astra Pro adds cart drawer, quick view, AJAX add-to-cart, off-canvas filters, infinite scroll/load-more and distraction-free checkout | GP Premium supplies styling and layout controls; the listed Astra conversion features are not included |
| Developer control | Visual controls and integrations are the priority | Granular hooks, filters, modular options and a minimal code-oriented base |
| Performance | 81/100 mobile PageSpeed in the cited controlled test | 82/100 mobile PageSpeed in the same test |
| Large agencies | Business Toolkit + AI supports 1,000 sites | GeneratePress One supports up to 500 sites |
Is Astra faster than GeneratePress?
Not in a way most site owners should use as a deciding factor. Astra reports a controlled WP Rocket mobile PageSpeed Insights test in which GeneratePress scored 82/100 and Astra 81/100. That one-point difference is described as immaterial in real-world use, and it is not a universal score for every hosting plan, page design or plugin stack.

Your server response time, cache configuration, image dimensions and formats, web fonts, JavaScript and third-party plugins usually have a much larger effect than selecting Astra instead of GeneratePress. A heavily designed page on fast hosting can outperform a sparse page on an overloaded server regardless of theme.
#1 Best Overall
What to optimize before changing themes
- Use quality hosting with consistent server response times.
- Configure full-page and browser caching, then test logged-out pages.
- Resize images to their displayed dimensions and use modern formats where your workflow supports them.
- Load only the fonts and weights the design actually uses.
- Remove plugins and scripts that do not contribute to a required feature.
- Retest representative home, article, archive and checkout pages rather than relying on one URL.
Choose between these themes for workflow, features and licensing. Choose neither solely because a benchmark is one point higher.
What you get from the free versions
Astra Free
Astra’s free tier is a practical starting point for a beginner, a brochure site or a client project that may remain small. It includes a usable header and footer builder, global typography and color controls, basic WooCommerce support and access to more than 300 free starter templates. You can establish a coherent visual system and import a complete site without immediately buying an upgrade.
The free product also connects to Astra’s broader ecosystem. Spectra, the vendor’s block extension, is available at no extra cost, so block-editor users can build more structured sections without purchasing a separate block package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGeneratePress Free
GeneratePress Free is intentionally restrained. It gives you a clean, low-overhead theme foundation, but it does not include a site library, starter templates or a header builder. That is an advantage when you want to assemble the design yourself and keep the base uncluttered; it is a cost and time disadvantage when you expect a ready-made site or visual header work out of the box.
For a custom Gutenberg project, the minimal starting point can be exactly what you want. For a non-technical owner who expects to click through a complete design, Astra reaches a usable result sooner.

Starter templates and page building
Astra’s template-first workflow
Starter Templates offers more than 400 complete sites across ecommerce, healthcare, law, education, software-as-a-service, restaurants, portfolios and other categories. Templates are available for the native block editor, Spectra and Elementor. This lets you start with page structures, navigation, typography and sample content, then replace the content rather than designing every page from a blank canvas.
That approach is especially useful for client handoffs: a client can edit familiar page sections while the overall layout remains consistent. It also reduces the number of builder decisions a beginner must make during the first build.
GeneratePress and GenerateBlocks
GeneratePress Premium includes a block-based theme builder, WooCommerce styling, local fonts and many layout controls. Its current pricing page lists more than 60 starter sites, while broader comparisons commonly describe more than 80. Treat the pricing page’s 60+ figure as the current vendor count; either way, the library is substantially smaller than Astra’s 400+ collection.
GenerateBlocks extends the native block editor with advanced blocks, responsive controls and reusable patterns. The current product pricing page lists more than 200 patterns; other vendor comparison material describes more than 300. Pattern counts can change as the library changes, so the current pricing-page figure is the safer planning number. GenerateBlocks Pro is sold separately unless it is included in GeneratePress One.
Which builder suits which person?
- Pick Astra when you want a visual, template-led build, quick client handoff or a large selection of niche designs.
- Pick GeneratePress when you want Gutenberg as the primary editor, reusable block patterns and full control over the structure without a large prebuilt design layer.
Pricing and what each plan actually includes
The following prices were checked on 15 October 2026. Annual renewal terms and product limits can change, so confirm the vendor checkout before purchase. GeneratePress states that all pricing is in USD and that licenses renew automatically each year.
Rank #3
| Product | Price checked 15 October 2026 | Site allowance or contents | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astra Free | $0 | Unlimited sites | Beginners, small sites and template-led builds |
| Astra Pro | $69/year | 3 sites | Visual controls, theme-builder features and WooCommerce enhancements |
| Astra Pro + AI | $99/year | 3 sites | Astra Pro plus the stated AI offering |
| Essential Toolkit + AI | $199/year | 10 sites | Multiple projects needing the wider toolkit |
| Business Toolkit + AI | $279/year | 1,000 sites | Large agencies and high-volume client work |
| GeneratePress Premium | $59/year | Site allowance not stated in the supplied pricing details | Premium theme controls and the GeneratePress builder |
| GenerateBlocks Pro | $99/year | Separate block-builder product | Advanced responsive blocks and patterns |
| GeneratePress One | $149/year | Up to 500 sites; includes GP Premium, GenerateBlocks Pro and GenerateCloud | Developers or agencies using the full GeneratePress stack |
Comparing only the $59 GeneratePress Premium price with Astra Pro’s $69 price is misleading because the products are not equivalent. Astra’s free tier already supplies more visual and template functionality, while the GeneratePress workflow may require GenerateBlocks Pro for the same level of block-building capability. GeneratePress One can be excellent value for an agency because one license covers up to 500 sites and includes three products, but a single-site owner may not use that scope.

Which theme is better for WooCommerce?
Astra is the stronger choice for a WooCommerce store that needs conversion-oriented features without assembling several additional plugins. Astra Pro’s WooCommerce module includes a cart drawer, quick view, AJAX add-to-cart, off-canvas filters, infinite scroll or load-more behavior, distraction-free checkout and per-category styling. Those controls affect how shoppers browse and complete purchases, not merely how product cards look.
GeneratePress Premium includes WooCommerce styling and layout controls, which can produce a clean shop and product template. It does not include the Astra conversion layer listed above. A GeneratePress store may therefore need separate plugins or custom development for quick view, AJAX cart behavior, advanced filters or checkout simplification. That can be the right trade-off when your developer wants to select each component, but it adds compatibility, maintenance and performance decisions.
WooCommerce decision checklist
- Choose Astra Pro if cart and checkout enhancements are part of the launch plan.
- Choose GeneratePress if styling control and custom implementation matter more than bundled shopping interactions.
- For either theme, test variable products, coupons, shipping, payment, account pages and mobile checkout with the final plugin stack.
Visual editing versus hooks and code control
Why beginners usually prefer Astra
Astra puts more of the initial design work in visual controls. Its free header and footer builder, global settings and template imports reduce the need to understand theme files, hooks or CSS before publishing. Astra Pro adds a visual header/footer builder, per-page layout overrides and theme-builder templates, giving non-technical users more control without writing code.
Its integrations also support common site types. Astra lists integrations with LearnDash, LifterLMS, Elementor, Beaver Builder, Spectra, CartFlows, SureForms, SureMembers and ZipWP. Dedicated LearnDash and LifterLMS integrations make Astra a sensible default for course sites when those platforms are central to the project.

Why developers often prefer GeneratePress
GeneratePress is designed as a clean base for developers who value granular hooks, filters, Gutenberg and modular loading. You can insert content at precise theme locations, keep functionality separated into reusable code and avoid paying for visual controls you will not use. That is particularly useful for a custom block system, a design system shared across client sites or a project where the theme should stay out of the way.
The trade-off is a steeper handoff for clients who expect a visual site builder. You will need to document your block patterns, custom options and editing rules, and you may write code for requirements that Astra exposes as settings.
Licensing and agency economics
For one or a few sites, compare the features you will actually use rather than the maximum site count. Astra Pro is listed at $69 per year for three sites; GeneratePress Premium is $59 per year, but GenerateBlocks Pro costs $99 per year separately if you need its advanced blocks. Astra’s broader toolkit plans cover 10 or 1,000 sites at the listed prices, while GeneratePress One covers up to 500 sites and includes GP Premium, GenerateBlocks Pro and GenerateCloud.
GeneratePress One also provides priority email support according to the vendor’s pricing information. That can matter for an agency maintaining many installations, although the value depends on how often your team needs vendor assistance. Confirm renewal pricing, license activation rules and whether a project can be transferred before standardizing a stack for clients.

Using a benchmark as a guarantee
The 82 versus 81 mobile result is a single controlled comparison reported by Astra, not a promise for your site. A new theme will not compensate for unoptimized images, slow hosting or a plugin-heavy page.
Best Value
Assuming “free” means equivalent
Astra Free and GeneratePress Free solve different problems. Astra gives you more ready-to-use design tools and templates. GeneratePress gives you a smaller foundation. Budget for the time required to build missing headers, layouts and patterns before deciding that the lower initial price is cheaper.
Confusing styling with store functionality
GeneratePress WooCommerce styling does not equal Astra’s listed cart, filter and checkout features. Write down the store interactions you need and check them individually before committing to a theme.
Importing a template without a content plan
Starter sites accelerate structure, but imported demo content can create cleanup work. Decide which pages, navigation items, fonts and images are genuinely required, then remove the rest before launch.

A 500-site or 1,000-site license is valuable only when you manage enough projects to use it. Conversely, a one-site workflow can become expensive if you add several separate builder products without accounting for annual renewals.
How to choose: practical scenarios
Choose Astra when
- You are a beginner who wants to publish without learning hooks or theme files.
- You want a large library of complete starter sites.
- You need a visual header/footer builder and per-page layout controls.
- Your WooCommerce plan includes cart, filter or checkout improvements.
- You are handing a site to a client who will edit it visually.
- You are building a LearnDash or LifterLMS project and want a dedicated integration.
Choose GeneratePress when
- A developer controls the build and can work comfortably with hooks and filters.
- Gutenberg and reusable block patterns are the center of the editing workflow.
- You want a minimal foundation with few bundled conveniences.
- You expect to implement store interactions with selected plugins or custom code.
- Your agency can use GeneratePress One across many client sites.
If speed is your only criterion
Treat Astra and GeneratePress as a tie. Select the one whose defaults reduce your implementation work, then spend the performance budget on hosting, caching, images, fonts and plugins.
A sensible evaluation process before launch
- List required features. Separate theme styling from needs such as cart behavior, filters, course integration, membership, forms and client editing.
- Build one representative page. Use the intended editor, fonts, images and essential plugins rather than a blank demo.
- Test the editing handoff. Have the person who will maintain the site create or edit a page and verify that the workflow is understandable.
- Test WooCommerce paths. Run product selection, cart, coupon, account, shipping, payment and mobile checkout scenarios if the site sells online.
- Measure after optimization. Configure caching and image handling, then compare the same pages on the same host. Do not compare an imported demo with a production page.
- Confirm license scope. Check the number of sites, renewal behavior, support level and product inclusions for the plan you will actually buy.
Final verdict
Astra is the best all-around recommendation for most site owners: its free version is more capable, the template library is dramatically larger, Spectra is included, and Astra Pro covers more WooCommerce conversion needs. It minimizes the distance from a new WordPress installation to a polished, editable site.
GeneratePress is the better specialist choice for a developer-led, Gutenberg-first build. Its minimal footprint, hook and filter system and modular approach reward people who want to control the implementation rather than configure a broad visual stack. GeneratePress One is especially compelling for agencies that can use one license on as many as 500 sites.
