There is no evidence-based universal winner. A 2025 UK studio pricing guide estimates conventional game-trailer projects from £5,000 for motion graphics to £150,000 or more for cinematic CGI, but it does not compare those projects with generative-AI production on an equivalent basis. Choose a workflow by comparing the full scope, revision and continuity needs, schedule, rights, and disclosure requirements—not by comparing an AI generation fee with a finished trailer budget.
What are you comparing?
“Traditional animation” can mean motion graphics, 2D animation, a hybrid of animation and gameplay or in-engine footage, or cinematic CGI. Generative AI is not a single production method either: the cost and control depend on the tools, assets, people, editing, and finishing involved. The available evidence does not establish a standard AI price, schedule, or level of control that can be compared directly with a studio-produced trailer.
A fair comparison prices the same deliverable: creative development, asset preparation, animation or generation, editing, compositing, color grading, sound, music rights, review rounds, and final formats. A raw generation fee is not equivalent to a complete commissioned trailer.
How much does a conventional game trailer cost?
Hocus Pocus Studio’s 2025 pricing guide gives these UK project estimates. They are one studio’s figures, not a market-wide survey or an AI comparison.

| Format | Hocus Pocus Studio estimate |
|---|---|
| Motion graphics | £5,000–£12,000 |
| 2D animated | £12,000–£35,000 |
| Hybrid animation plus gameplay or in-engine footage | £20,000–£50,000 |
| Cinematic CGI | £45,000–£150,000+ |
The guide says its component costs can include 2D animation at £4,000–£12,000 and cinematic CGI animation at £12,000–£40,000; those are components, not total project prices. Concept and storyboarding, asset creation, compositing, grading, sound, music licensing or composition, and reviews can also contribute to the overall budget. Format, length, character count, environment complexity, visual effects, music, rush timing, and deliverables affect the estimate. See Hocus Pocus Studio’s 2025 guide to game-trailer costs.
The same guide estimates conventional production at 6–16 weeks overall: straightforward motion-graphics or 2D work often takes 6–8 weeks, while fully rendered CGI commonly takes 12–20 weeks. These are studio estimates; they do not establish how long an AI-assisted trailer takes from brief to approved delivery. Its comparisons that US rates tend to be 20–30% higher than comparable UK tiers and freelancer rates typically 30–50% lower are also the studio’s estimates, not independently verified market statistics.

Where can each workflow give you control?
Conventional studio pipeline
A conventional production plan can identify distinct approval points: concept, storyboard, assets, animation, compositing, grade, and sound. That structure makes it possible to specify who approves designs and shot changes and how many review rounds are included. It does not guarantee a vendor will meet a brief; the contract should define deliverables, revision limits, timing, and acceptance.
Generative-AI workflow
The sources do not establish that generative workflows are always less controllable, or that traditional workflows always deliver consistent results. Control depends on the particular tools, people, assets, and contract. Ask a prospective team how it will preserve character appearance, costume, environment, lighting, and camera continuity between shots; what can be revised after generation; who approves final frames; and how supplied game assets will be used.

What rights should you clear?
AI output does not automatically resolve rights questions. Review the exact tool terms for the project, including permissions for inputs and outputs, commercial use, attribution, and distribution. Check rights to supplied game assets, third-party materials, likenesses, and music as well. Kongregate’s developer guidance says developers are responsible for rights to content in their games, including AI-generated assets, and advises checking tool terms, infringement risk, law, and platform policies. That is platform guidance, not a universal ruling on copyright ownership. Read Kongregate’s AI disclosure guidance.
Copyright treatment can also depend on jurisdiction and the details of a work. The U.S. Copyright Office’s AI resource page says Part 2 of its report, addressing copyrightability of generative-AI outputs, was published January 29, 2025. It also says a pre-publication version of Part 3 on generative-AI training was released May 9, 2025, with a final version forthcoming according to the page. This U.S. federal work does not settle every jurisdiction or determine the rights in a particular trailer. Consult the U.S. Copyright Office’s AI resources.

For footage of the game itself, check the publisher’s commercial-use terms. YouTube’s guidance says monetization may depend on rights granted by game publishers; footage of software interfaces may require a contract or paid license. YouTube uploads
YouTube’s cited policy requires disclosure when AI-generated or meaningfully altered content appears realistic. Its examples include realistic scenes that did not happen and AI-generated music; clearly unrealistic animated content and certain production assistance are among examples that do not require disclosure under that rule. YouTube says labels may appear for disclosed content and that disclosure itself does not restrict audience or monetization eligibility. Apply the policy to the finished trailer and the current upload rules rather than assuming every use of AI has the same treatment. Check YouTube’s AI-content disclosure rules.

Kongregate game descriptions
Kongregate’s March 19, 2026 guidance requests accurate player-facing disclosure in a game description about whether and how AI was used. The guidance distinguishes that request from the Game License & Upload Agreement, which it says does not require a specific development-use disclosure. This is Kongregate’s platform guidance, not a general rule for all stores or video platforms.
Quick Recap
How to choose a production route
- Define the deliverable. Set the trailer’s length, formats, visual scope, required game footage, audio, and approval rounds.
- Get complete, comparable quotes. Ask each studio or AI-assisted team to itemize creative development, asset work, animation or generation, editing, compositing, grading, sound, music rights, revisions, and delivery.
- Test the control requirements. Identify which characters, environments, or shots must match established game assets, then ask how continuity and revisions will be managed.
- Clear rights before production. Confirm tool terms, input permissions, output use, third-party assets, music, likenesses, and the publisher’s rules for game footage.
- Check the destination’s rules. Apply the relevant platform’s disclosure and monetization guidance to the finished content and the way it will be published.
