Decide what the trailer needs to show
Choose a format before you capture anything: a gameplay trailer, teaser, cinematic, or a mix. Then settle on one main takeaway—for example, the action players repeat, a distinctive mechanic, or the game’s setting and tone. Steam supports those trailer categories and recommends that a store page’s first trailer be primarily gameplay, showing what players do from the perspective they will use in the game. That distinction matters: a polished cinematic can establish mood, but it does not necessarily show what playing the game is like. If the trailer combines cinematic scenes and gameplay, make the gameplay easy to recognize rather than letting the presentation imply that every shot is interactive.
Plan the shots before recording
Build a short shot list
Arrange moments so viewers can quickly identify the game, then see how its loop, feature, or world works. A practical sequence might move from a recognizable game image to the central player action, a few variations or escalating moments, and a closing title. Keep each shot focused on something the viewer can understand.

Storyboard and prepare a repeatable build
Sketch frames, assemble stills from the game, or create a more polished storyboard. Before capture, prepare a stable build and the moments you need: save points, controlled encounters, and any in-game camera or replay tools available. These are practical ways to make footage repeatable, not requirements for every game or platform.

Capture the game material
Stage the actions in your shot list and record multiple takes. Gameplay capture can take patience, choreography, cinematography, and coordination, as Epic notes in its trailer playbook. Record enough material to choose clear, usable moments rather than relying on a single take.
Use a capture setup suited to the source. A capture card can help route console gameplay into a computer, while a PC-native workflow may not need one. No particular piece of hardware is required for every trailer; the important thing is to capture footage that represents the game and supports the shots you planned.

Edit for clarity, not just spectacle
Choose shots that make the player’s action legible. Change shot scale or pace when it helps viewers understand what is happening; avoid cutting so quickly or layering on effects that the game becomes hard to read. Add the game title and concise on-screen text where they help identify a feature or context.
Design for people who may encounter the trailer briefly or watch without audio. Steam specifically advises developers to account for short discovery contexts and muted viewing. Keep the trailer accurate and clear the rights
Make sure the footage reflects the game players can actually experience. ESRB’s guidance for internet trailers allows gameplay, live action, and pre-rendered material when it reflects the game’s true nature and does not supplement or exceed the pertinent content in the game. Check permissions for music and every other third-party asset. Valve’s video policy permits video uses of Valve game content under its terms, but says you need the owner’s permission to include someone else’s material, such as music. That is Valve’s policy, not a universal license for other games, assets, or destinations; review the applicable rules and rights for each. Valve video policy

Export for the platform where the trailer will appear
Export settings depend on the destination. For Steam store trailers, Steam recommends the highest available resolution up to 1920 × 1080, 30/29.97 or 60/59.94 fps, a high bitrate of 5,000+ Kbps, H.264 video with AAC audio, and a 16:9 aspect ratio (4:3 is accepted). On Steam, the first two valid trailers appear before screenshots, and processing must finish before the game can be released. Review the live documentation before delivery for current file guidance, ordering, and storefront behavior.
