Genius Builds a Computer Inside Minecraft That Runs Games Inside Minecraft

Yes—Minecraft can run a version of Minecraft inside itself. The project is CHUNGUS2, a computer assembled from Redstone and other in-game components by sammyuri, with Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow helping adapt it to run Minecraft. It is a demonstration of virtual circuitry and game logic, not a conventional PC: the machine has a CPU, memory and graphics hardware built from blocks, and it needs a specialized high-performance Redstone server to process its most demanding operations.

What CHUNGUS2 actually is

CHUNGUS2 is a programmable computer constructed inside Minecraft. Redstone switches, wires and logic arrangements act as electronic gates; together they form a processor that can read and write memory, execute instructions and send data to a display. The design applies ideas familiar from real computer engineering—such as a CPU, RAM and graphics processing—to Minecraft’s block-based logic system.

sammyuri created the CPU. Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow joined the effort to get Minecraft running on the machine. The result is a computer inside one game that can execute other programs, including a Minecraft implementation rendered on its own display.

How a Redstone computer can run software

Logic gates become a processor

Redstone components can represent binary states: on and off, or 1 and 0. Arranged into logic gates, adders, registers and control circuits, they can perform arithmetic and follow instruction sequences. CHUNGUS2 combines those circuits into an 8-bit processor, according to PCWorld’s technical description of the project.

Memory stores instructions and data

The computer connects its processor to Redstone-based RAM. PCWorld reports 256 bytes of RAM for the CHUNGUS2 configuration it describes. That is tiny by modern-computer standards, but sufficient for carefully designed demonstrations and compact 2D programs when the machine’s instruction set and graphics system are built around severe constraints.

Graphics hardware turns data into pixels

A graphics component converts the program’s output into a visible image. The official Minecraft feature describes the Minecraft-in-Minecraft display as 96 × 64 pixels. PCWorld, describing the game-playing computer from a different technical angle, lists a 32 × 32 screen and controller. These are source-specific descriptions of the project and should not be merged into one resolution figure.

What “Minecraft running inside Minecraft” means

The inner game is software executed by CHUNGUS2, not a second copy of the full modern Minecraft client with the same graphics and world simulation. Its limited processor, memory and display require a compact implementation designed for the machine. The official feature presents a Minecraft version rendered at 96 × 64 pixels, while PCWorld describes a 32 × 32 screen/controller in its account of the game-playing computer. The differing figures reflect the way each publication describes the build and its display hardware.

The project also demonstrates that the hardware is programmable rather than a one-off animation. PCWorld reports interchangeable 2D programs such as Tetris and Snake, showing that the circuitry can load and execute more than one game or application.

Why it needs a high-performance Redstone server

On an ordinary vanilla server, large Redstone computers take too long to advance through their circuits at a useful rate. Minecraft.net says the team used the Minecraft High Performance Redstone Server to accelerate Redstone processes by thousands of times. PCWorld likewise notes that some programs need artificial server speed-up.

That acceleration is part of the demonstration’s operating environment. It does not mean CHUNGUS2 is a one-hertz desktop computer that can deliver ordinary, real-time Minecraft gameplay on an unmodified server. The reported clock and memory figures describe the in-game machine; the specialized server changes how quickly the simulation can process its circuitry.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

Why the build matters as computer science

  • It makes invisible computation visible. A conventional processor hides gates and wires inside silicon. CHUNGUS2 exposes those ideas as a physical-looking network of Minecraft components.
  • It forces disciplined design. An 8-bit CPU, 256 bytes of RAM and a low-resolution display leave almost no room for waste. Programs must fit the instruction set, memory layout and graphics limits.
  • It joins hardware and software. The same world contains the circuitry, the memory, the display and the programs running on them, making the boundary between building and coding unusually literal.
  • It shows why simulation speed matters. The high-performance server is effectively an acceleration layer for a complicated digital circuit. Without it, the design can exist but take impractically long to execute.

Who built it and what inspired the work

sammyuri is identified by Minecraft.net as the Redstone enthusiast and creator behind the project. Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow helped the team get Minecraft running on CHUNGUS2. The official feature also names Mumbo Jumbo tutorials, QSmally’s QCPU and Open Redstone Engineers among the inspirations or resources associated with sammyuri’s work.

sammyuri summarized the motivation with the line, “You know the classic thing that anything can run DOOM? Well, Minecraft probably can as well.” The same feature quotes a practical rule for finishing ambitious builds: “If you start a project you have to want to finish it.”

How CHUNGUS2 differs from other Minecraft computers

Minecraft has hosted other Redstone computers that run programs and simple games. Minecraft’s official “In Deep Thought” history discusses earlier Redstone machines and an Atari 2600 emulator, while PC Gamer’s September 9, 2022 coverage provides a separate specification list and example programs for CHUNGUS2. Those projects should not be treated as interchangeable: they can differ in architecture, reliance on command blocks, memory design, display resolution, color capability and whether an accelerated server is required.

CHUNGUS2’s defining achievement for this story is specifically the Minecraft-in-Minecraft demonstration, built from in-game circuitry and rendered on a very constrained display.

What you would need to attempt a smaller version

  1. Learn binary Redstone logic. Start with switches, repeaters and basic logic gates, then build adders and storage cells.
  2. Define an instruction set. Decide how many bits an instruction uses, which registers exist and how programs address memory.
  3. Build and test the CPU. Separate the clock, control logic, arithmetic unit and registers so faults can be isolated.
  4. Add RAM and input/output. Give programs a stable memory map and a simple display or controller interface.
  5. Write tiny programs first. A counter, sprite mover or Snake-like game is a realistic test before attempting a Minecraft implementation.
  6. Plan the execution environment. Expect complex circuits to run slowly on a normal server; any acceleration must be identified as part of the setup rather than confused with the machine’s own clock speed.

Is it a real computer?

In the computer-science sense, yes: CHUNGUS2 contains a processor, memory, input/output and executable programs. In the consumer-hardware sense, no: it is not a replacement for a desktop, and the published figures are project specifications rather than independent performance benchmarks. Its achievement is proving that Minecraft’s logic system can be assembled into a programmable computer capable of running games—including a compact Minecraft experience inside Minecraft—under a highly constrained and accelerated simulation.
