Short answer: Google did not launch the entire Play Store as a Windows app in 2022. On October 20, 2022, Chrome Unboxed reported that one California user saw an “Install on Windows” button on the web Play Store for selected games and received a Windows .exe. Google did not confirm the behavior, and the report said it could have been an early experiment or a visual bug. The supported way to play eligible Google mobile games on Windows is Google Play Games on PC, not a general Windows version of the Play Store.
What the October 2022 report actually showed
Chrome Unboxed described a single US-facing observation on October 20, 2022. While browsing Google Play on the web, a user in California saw an Install on Windows control on some game listings. The report said the user received a Windows executable after using it and identified Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd among the examples observed.
That was evidence of a listing or delivery path appearing for one user, not evidence of a US-wide product launch. Google had not explained the control, and Chrome Unboxed explicitly left open the possibility that it was a mistake in the interface or an early, limited test. Nothing in that report established that every Play Store game could install directly on Windows.
How that differs from Google Play Games on PC
Google’s official Windows product is Google Play Games on PC. It is a separate Windows client with its own installer, supported-game catalog and eligibility rules. Installing it does not turn Windows into a full Android Play Store environment.

What Google announced after the 2022 sighting
Expanded service availability
Google’s Android Developers overview dated July 13, 2023 said Google Play Games on PC was available in 120+ countries, subject to device and account eligibility. That is a historical figure from that date, not a current 2026 country count and not confirmation that the 2022 web control was broadly available.
General-availability plan
On March 13, 2025, Google announced that Google Play Games on PC would move toward general availability later that year. This was an announced plan at the time, rather than proof that the earlier Windows button had been an official launch.

Native Windows game publishing
On July 17, 2025, Google Play said developers could publish native Windows game installers directly to Google Play Games on PC through Play Console. That is a developer distribution capability: it explains how Windows-native games can be delivered through Google’s PC gaming service, but it does not retroactively validate the 2022 Play Store observation.
Windows-optimized discovery and remote installation
In its Q1 2026 update, Google Play described a PC section in the Play Store’s Games tab for Windows-optimized games. It also described using a phone to search and browse those games and remotely install them on a PC. Google said that feature was live in over 90 titles at the time and was expanding toward general release later in 2026. The figure refers to titles supporting that feature, not the size of the overall Windows catalog or the number of US users.

How to install the supported Windows client now
For the documented route, use Google’s official page: play.google.com/googleplaygames.
- On a Windows PC, open play.google.com/googleplaygames.
- Download the Google Play Games installer.
- Open the downloaded file and follow the setup prompts.
- If setup asks for it, enable Windows Hypervisor Platform and restart Windows.
- If a game requires it, enable CPU virtualization in the PC’s BIOS or UEFI settings.
Google says installation will not continue when the computer fails the published requirements. Hypervisor changes can affect other emulators, so check those programs after enabling the feature.

Minimum PC requirements
Google Play Help listed these minimum requirements when checked on September 28, 2026:
- Windows 10 version 2004 or newer
- An SSD with at least 10 GB of available space
- 8 GB of RAM
- Intel UHD Graphics 630 or a comparable GPU
- Four physical CPU cores
- A Windows administrator account
- Hardware virtualization
Google’s recommended configuration includes a gaming-class GPU such as an NVIDIA GeForce MX450 and eight logical CPU cores for better gameplay. Requirements can change, so consult the current Google Play Help page before troubleshooting a new installation.

Why a game may still be unavailable
Passing the hardware check does not guarantee access to every title. Availability can depend on the game, the supported country, the Google account and the service’s current catalog. A listing that appeared in the 2022 report therefore cannot be treated as a promise that the same installer is still offered or that it works outside its original test conditions.
- The game is not in the PC catalog: Google Play Games on PC is a supported-games service, not the full Android Play Store.
- Your country or account is not eligible: Google ties availability to regional and account conditions.
- The PC fails a requirement: Check Windows version, SSD space, memory, graphics, CPU cores and virtualization.
- Virtualization conflicts with another emulator: Review the emulator’s behavior after enabling Windows Hypervisor Platform.
If setup fails, follow Google’s published troubleshooting steps, correct the named requirement and reinstall from the official Google page. Repackaged installers from unofficial sites are not a safe workaround.
Can you install Google Play Store games on Windows?
Yes, but only where Google supports the game through Google Play Games on PC or a later Windows-optimized distribution feature. The 2022 “Install on Windows” sighting was a limited, unexplained web behavior reported for selected games. It did not establish a complete Windows Play Store application, universal access for US users or direct installation of the entire Android catalog.
