Gerrrms is easiest to recommend as a compact local party game, not a deep solo adventure. Its microorganism brawls turn swinging from arena pegs into the main event, and the unusual movement can be entertaining once it clicks. But critics found the controls tricky and the modes repetitive, so its appeal depends on whether your group enjoys a simple game loop and short sessions.
What is Gerrrms?
Gerrrms is a digital Nintendo Switch party brawler from Bugbomb Studio. Players control microorganisms in arena fights, swinging from points around the stage and releasing to alter their direction. Nintendo’s listing describes seven game modes and 11 unlockable characters, with play for one to four people on a single system. The game was released on July 23, 2020, according to Nintendo’s US product page.

The movement is the game’s distinguishing idea: rather than simply running around an arena, you latch on, swing, and let go to build or change momentum. That gives matches a different feel from a conventional party brawler, but it also means steering takes some adjustment.
How does Gerrrms play?
Swinging is the central skill
The core loop is easy to describe but less immediately precise in practice. In a July 2020 interview with PocketGamer.biz, Bugbomb Games’ Robert Kujawa said the team wanted the game to be picked up in under a minute and chose single-button controls inspired by mobile games. That is the developer’s design intent, not a guarantee that every player will find the movement intuitive.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Reviewers found that controlling direction could be difficult, especially while learning how to use the swinging mechanic. Switch Player’s September 7, 2020 review called attention to the peg-swinging premise while noting that the modes could feel similar. If your group likes experimenting with physics-like movement, the controls may be part of the fun; if you want immediate, exact control, they may be a frustration.
Modes and solo play
Nintendo lists seven modes and 11 characters to unlock. The breadth sounds promising, but the reviews do not suggest that each mode transforms the underlying play. LadiesGamers’ July 30, 2020 review describes a tutorial, seven modes, and solo missions, while criticizing the difficulty of directing movement and the limited depth. Switch Player likewise saw Mission mode as a better route to solo longevity than simply cycling through similar-feeling modes.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Mission mode gives a solo player goals to work through, so there is something to pursue without assembling a group. Still, the available reviews point to a modest, repetitive experience rather than a substantial single-player campaign.
Is Gerrrms good for multiplayer?
Local multiplayer is the clearest fit. Nintendo specifies one to four players on one system, with TV, tabletop, and handheld play supported. The player-count range means it can accommodate a small group, but the controller requirement matters: Nintendo says two or four Joy-Con are needed. Check the Nintendo listing for the stated setup before planning a session.

The best case for Gerrrms is a group willing to learn the movement and enjoy a few unusual rounds together. The critical picture is mixed: Metacritic showed a 55 Metascore from seven critic reviews when accessed in 2026, labeling the result “Mixed or Average.” That is a dated snapshot of reviews published between July and September 2020, not a measure of current player opinion or a fresh gameplay test. Switch Player saw potential in the brief multiplayer format, while LadiesGamers felt the game suited short sessions better than players looking for depth.

Consider Gerrrms if you want an offbeat local party game, have the Joy-Con setup for your group, and are happy for the swinging controls and simple mode variations to be the main attraction. It is a less convincing fit if you want a long solo game, highly varied modes, or precise controls from the first match.

Nintendo lists the US edition as digital software, and its regional Spain listing explains that the game is paid for with eShop funds and downloaded to the linked console. These listings establish a digital release, not a physical cartridge edition. Purchase terms can depend on the country associated with your Nintendo Account, so check your local eShop for current availability and price rather than relying on an old review or another region’s listing. Nintendo also lists the game as behaving consistently on Nintendo Switch 2.
The official US listing gives the download size as 754 MB and identifies Mild Fantasy Violence. Rating labels and store terms may vary by region; check your local store page for the version that applies to you.
