The challenge is controlling each movement precisely: a bad placement can cost you height, so climbing and recovering from falls are both part of the core loop.
How do you play Getting Over It?
The goal is to climb a large mountain using only the hammer. You move its head around the character with the mouse, placing it against nearby surfaces to push, pull, hook, or swing yourself upward. The Steam description calls the game a punishing climbing game and a homage to Jazzuo’s 2002 B-Game classic Sexy Hiking.
In practical terms, a climb is a sequence of deliberate contacts with the environment:
- Place: Move the hammer head toward a ledge, edge, or other surface you can reach.
- Hook or brace: Set the head against the surface so it can support or redirect your movement.
- Push, pull, or swing: Move the hammer through an arc to lift or propel the character.
- Reset: Reposition the hammer for the next contact while managing the momentum from the previous move.
With practice, the Steam listing says players can jump, swing, climb, and fly. Those are outcomes of manipulating the hammer; there is no separate set of conventional movement controls described in the listing.

How do you control the hammer?
On PC, the official Steam description says, “You move the hammer with the mouse, and that’s all there is.” Mouse movement is therefore the supported input detail to plan around. The listing does not establish that a particular mouse, gaming mouse, DPI setting, controller, or accessory is required or better.
Because the hammer’s position and arc determine whether you gain height or lose it, controlled, intentional movement matters more than simply moving quickly. A missed placement can break a climb or send you back down, making it important to learn how a contact affects your balance and momentum.

Why is Getting Over It so difficult?
The controls are simple in number but consequential in effect. Every advance depends on placing the hammer where it can hold, push, or swing the character. A small error can undo substantial upward progress, and the game does not remove the possibility of falling as you climb. Learning the terrain, controlling momentum, and finding a way back into the climb after a fall are central parts of play.
Bennett Foddy’s official Steam description frames the experience bluntly: “The median time to finish for my playtesters was 5 hours, but the mean was closer to ∞.” That is the creator’s playful report about his playtesters, not a guaranteed completion time or a population-wide measurement. The same listing describes the experience as lasting “Between 2 and ∞ hours.”

What should players know before starting?
- Expect setbacks: Progress can be lost repeatedly, so the climbing challenge includes recovering from falls as well as making upward moves.
- Check the content warning: The Steam listing says, “Epilepsy warning: contains some surprising elements.” It does not specify particular triggers.
- Know the release context: Steam lists Bennett Foddy as both developer and publisher, with a release date of December 6, 2017. Its listing includes single-player and commentary features, and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux requirements.
- Distinguish historical updates from a compatibility guarantee: The official Steam community hub records a developer-posted January 6, 2022 notice for version 1.7. The notice says version 1.6 included a compatibility update and a small change to the pot collider; that historical note does not establish compatibility with every current system.
How did the game become associated with the Foddian genre?
In a September 27, 2017 post, Foddy wrote, “I created this game / for a certain kind of person / To hurt them.” In that same post, he said the game had caught fire with streamers, entered the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, contributed to a genre sometimes called “Foddian,” and been embraced by speedrunners.
