Getting Started With Ganglia Monitoring on an Ubuntu VPS

A practical guide to Ganglia on Ubuntu: install gmond and gmetad, configure unicast monitoring, secure port 8649, connect the web frontend and troubleshoot missing metrics.

Ganglia monitoring on an Ubuntu VPS is a three-part system: gmond collects and exchanges metrics, gmetad polls those metrics and stores time-series data, and ganglia-web displays the result. A small VPS can run all three components; a larger installation normally runs gmond on every monitored machine and centralizes gmetad and the web frontend.

This guide takes you from package installation through unicast configuration, firewall rules, service validation, and the checks that explain an empty dashboard.

How Ganglia is laid out

Ganglia is easier to troubleshoot when each daemon has one clearly defined job. The data path is normally gmond on a monitored host, then gmetad on a collector, then the web frontend reading the collector’s stored data.

Component Runs where What it does What it needs to reach
gmond Every monitored node Collects host metrics and sends or receives Ganglia metric traffic. Its configured peers or collector on the Ganglia channel.
gmetad Collector, often one central VPS Polls one or more gmond or gmetad sources, writes round-robin databases, and exports aggregated XML. Each configured data_source.
ganglia-web Usually beside gmetad Renders graphs and host views from the collector’s RRD data. The collector’s data directory and web server.

The Ganglia project describes gmetad as collecting from multiple gmond or gmetad sources, saving the information to local round-robin databases, and exporting XML that combines those sources. This separation explains common failures: a healthy web page does not prove that a collector is receiving metrics, and a healthy gmond does not prove that the frontend can read the collector’s files.

Single-VPS layout

For one Ubuntu VPS, install gmond to monitor the machine itself. Install gmetad when that VPS will collect and retain the metrics, and add the web frontend when you want a browser dashboard. The collector can poll the VPS through a local or private address, depending on the channel configuration.

Several monitored machines

With multiple servers, install and configure gmond on each node. Put gmetad on one collector that can reach every node over the selected network. Add redundancy only when you have an operational reason for multiple collectors or sources; a single collector is easier to operate for a small deployment.

Before installing: decisions and prerequisites

Confirm the Ubuntu release and repositories

Package names and versions are release-sensitive. Before installing, identify the Ubuntu image you are using and check that the repositories expose the Ganglia packages for that release. The documented package set is ganglia-monitor, ganglia-monitor-python, and gmetad. Use apt-cache policy to see the candidate version available on the actual VPS rather than assuming a version from another Ubuntu image.

Choose a transport

Multicast is convenient on a private LAN when the network permits it. Cloud and VPS networks frequently filter multicast, so unicast is usually the more predictable choice. Whichever mode you select, the sending and receiving channel definitions must agree on address and port.

Plan the trust boundary

The conventional Ganglia channel uses port 8649: UDP for gmond exchange and TCP for gmetad polling. Treat these as monitoring-plane ports, not public web ports. Decide which private addresses or monitoring peers should be allowed before adding firewall rules.

Install the Ubuntu packages

Run the following on the VPS that will host the monitoring components:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. sudo apt update
  2. sudo apt install ganglia-monitor ganglia-monitor-python gmetad
  3. Check package availability and installed versions with apt-cache policy ganglia-monitor ganglia-monitor-python gmetad.

If you need a browser dashboard, install the Ganglia web frontend package provided by your Ubuntu release. Its package name and dependencies can vary between releases, so search the target repository rather than copying a package name from a different distribution image.

Do not assume that a successful package transaction means the final service names are identical on every Ubuntu release. Discover the units supplied by your image:

systemctl list-unit-files | grep -E 'gmond|gmetad'

Generate and edit the gmond configuration

The default configuration file is /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf. Generate or inspect a baseline before editing it:

gmond --default_config

Ubuntu also documents the equivalent default-configuration or test option as -t. Save the generated output as /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf if the package did not create the file, then validate it before starting the daemon.

Set a consistent cluster identity

In the cluster block, set a name that is identical on nodes intended to appear together. The block also carries owner, location, and URL fields. Those descriptive fields do not replace the cluster name: a spelling or capitalization mismatch can split hosts into separate logical clusters in the interface.

Use unicast on a typical VPS

A unicast setup defines where metrics are sent and where they are received instead of relying on multicast discovery. The exact baseline emitted by gmond --default_config should remain your starting point; edit its channel blocks rather than deleting unrelated defaults. A conceptual arrangement is:

udp_send_channel {
  host = 10.0.0.20
  port = 8649
}

udp_recv_channel {
  port = 8649
}

Replace 10.0.0.20 with the private address of the collector or receiving node. If the collector and monitored process share one VPS, use the address that the local service actually binds to and reference the same address in gmetad.conf. Keep the port consistent across every channel and firewall rule.

Understand stale-host controls before changing them

host_tmax, host_dmax, and related cleanup settings determine how long a host or metric remains visible after updates stop. Ganglia marks hosts down after repeated missed updates and can later remove them. Do not tune these values merely to hide an intermittent network problem; first establish whether packets are reaching the collector, then choose a retention window that matches your alerting needs.

Configure gmetad as the collector

The default collector file is /etc/ganglia/gmetad.conf. A collector needs at least one reachable data_source. The documented syntax is:

data_source "Cluster A" host[:port] ...

For a single VPS, the entry might look like this, with the address changed to match your channel:

data_source "VPS-Cluster" 10.0.0.20:8649

If you omit the port, gmetad assumes 8649. Specifying it explicitly makes the intended path easier to audit. The name in quotes should correspond to the logical cluster name used by the monitored gmond nodes.

Multiple and redundant sources

gmetad can poll multiple gmond or gmetad sources and can list redundant sources for a cluster. Add additional sources only after the basic path works. Every listed address must be routable from the collector, and every source must permit the collector’s address through its firewall and gmond access rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the services safely

First test the configuration, then enable and start the units discovered on your Ubuntu image:

  1. Validate the gmond file: sudo gmond -t -c /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf.
  2. List the exact unit names again with systemctl list-unit-files | grep -E 'gmond|gmetad'.
  3. Enable the appropriate units at boot, for example sudo systemctl enable gmond and sudo systemctl enable gmetad if those are the names supplied by your package.
  4. Start them with the corresponding sudo systemctl start ... commands.
  5. Inspect each result immediately: sudo systemctl status gmond and sudo systemctl status gmetad, substituting the unit names shown on your release.

If a unit fails, read its journal before changing configuration:

sudo journalctl -u gmond -b
sudo journalctl -u gmetad -b

A daemon that exits during startup usually has a syntax, permission, address, or port conflict that is visible in this output.

Firewall and access control

Limit UDP and TCP 8649

Open UDP 8649 only between gmond peers that exchange metrics. Open TCP 8649 only from the collector to the sources it polls. On an internet-facing VPS, do not allow either protocol from the entire internet when a private network or fixed monitoring addresses are available.

For a host using UFW, a source-restricted rule has this shape:

sudo ufw allow from 10.0.0.20 to any port 8649 proto udp
sudo ufw allow from 10.0.0.30 to any port 8649 proto tcp

Use the real peer addresses and verify the resulting policy with sudo ufw status numbered. If your provider supplies a separate cloud firewall, duplicate the restriction there; a local rule cannot permit traffic that the provider drops first.

Use gmond ACLs as a second boundary

gmond supports explicit allow and deny rules by IP and mask, including a default-deny policy. Configure ACLs so that only the collector and approved peers can query or send data. Firewall rules reduce exposure at the network edge; ACLs still protect the daemon if another interface or internal route reaches it.

Protect the dashboard separately

If the dashboard is public, publish it through the web server with HTTPS and authentication supplied by that web-server stack. The dashboard’s HTTP or HTTPS exposure is separate from the Ganglia data channel. Never make UDP or TCP 8649 broadly reachable just because the web page needs to be reachable.

Validate the complete data path

1. Validate configuration syntax

Run the test mode before every restart:

sudo gmond -t -c /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf

For a problem that appears only at runtime, run gmond in the foreground with a positive debug level so errors remain visible instead of disappearing into a service manager:

sudo gmond -f -d 5 -c /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf

Stop the foreground process before restarting the managed service.

2. Confirm listeners and routes

Check that the expected process is listening on the configured channel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo ss -lunpt | grep 8649

Confirm that the collector can route to every data_source address and that the source can receive traffic from the collector. A blocked 8649 path is the first network check when a dashboard is empty.

3. Confirm gmetad has a live source

Re-open /etc/ganglia/gmetad.conf and verify that at least one data_source is present, spelled correctly, and points to the configured address and port. Then inspect the gmetad journal for connection or polling errors.

4. Confirm the frontend’s data path

The web frontend normally sits with gmetad because it needs access to the RRD files that the collector writes. Check that the web configuration points to the collector’s actual RRD directory and that the web-server account can read it. A page that loads but shows no hosts often indicates a frontend path or permissions problem rather than a browser problem.

Troubleshoot an empty or incomplete dashboard

No hosts appear at all

  1. Run gmond -t and fix every syntax error.
  2. Check the gmond listener with ss and confirm that its send and receive channel definitions use the same port and compatible transport.
  3. Check the VPS firewall and provider firewall for UDP 8649 between peers.
  4. Review gmond ACLs for an unintended deny rule.
  5. Verify that gmetad.conf contains a reachable data_source and that TCP 8649 is allowed from collector to source.

The collector runs but data is stale

First determine whether updates stopped at the source or whether the collector stopped polling. Read both service journals and inspect the channel path. If packets are arriving but hosts disappear quickly, review host_tmax, host_dmax, and cleanup settings. Increase retention only when the longer stale period is acceptable for your monitoring policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only some nodes are visible

Compare the visible and missing nodes’ cluster names, channel addresses, ports, and ACLs. A node can be healthy locally yet absent from the dashboard if it sends to a different collector address, uses multicast on a network that filters it, or has a cluster name that does not match the intended group.

The service will not start after a change

Undo the last edit or restore the generated baseline, run gmond -t, and inspect journalctl. Common causes are a malformed block, an address not assigned to the VPS, a port already occupied by another process, or a firewall change mistaken for a daemon failure. Apply one change at a time so the next test identifies the actual cause.

A practical operating checklist

  • Packages: Confirm the three documented package names and candidate versions on the target Ubuntu release.
  • Files: Keep /etc/ganglia/gmond.conf and /etc/ganglia/gmetad.conf backed up with the VPS configuration.
  • Identity: Use one consistent cluster name for nodes that should be grouped.
  • Transport: Prefer unicast when the VPS provider does not guarantee multicast.
  • Ports: Restrict UDP 8649 to metric peers and TCP 8649 to collector-to-source polling.
  • Access: Combine network firewall restrictions with gmond ACLs.
  • Validation: Test configuration, inspect listeners, read service journals, and verify the web frontend’s RRD path.
  • Retention: Tune stale-host cleanup only after you understand the desired freshness and outage window.
