The practical way to run LXC containers on an Ubuntu VPS is to install LXD, Canonical’s manager for LXC-based system containers, then initialize it and launch an Ubuntu image with the lxc command-line client. On a supported host, the shortest working path is sudo snap install lxd, adding your operator account to the lxd group, running lxd init --minimal, and launching ubuntu:24.04. This creates a lightweight container rather than a full virtual machine, while leaving the LXD daemon with authority over the host’s containers, storage, networks and devices.

What LXC, LXD and the lxc command each do
LXC is the Linux container technology. It uses the host kernel to run isolated user spaces, so a container normally starts faster and consumes less overhead than a virtual machine. LXD is the management daemon and API that creates, starts, stops and configures those containers; it can also manage virtual machines. The lxc client is the command-line tool you use to talk to LXD.

That distinction matters when following tutorials. You do not normally install a separate “LXC server” and then launch an image directly. On Ubuntu, the supported beginner workflow is to install LXD and operate it through lxc. The default command creates a container. Adding --vm asks LXD to create a virtual machine instead.
Check the Ubuntu VPS before installing
Use a supported Ubuntu Server installation and reserve storage for the image, the container’s writable filesystem, logs and application data. Canonical’s first-steps tutorial lists at least 20 GiB of free disk space for its exercise. That is a tutorial prerequisite, not a universal sizing rule: a game server, database or build workload can require considerably more space.

- Confirm that you can run commands with
sudo. - Check available disk space before downloading an image.
- Plan where persistent application data and backups will live.
- Understand that CPU virtualization support is required for LXD virtual machines, but not for ordinary containers.
Ubuntu Server cloud images may already include LXD. If the lxc command is already available, check the existing installation and avoid installing a second manager without first understanding how the host was provisioned.
Install LXD with the recommended Snap package
On a regular Ubuntu VPS, install the stable LXD Snap:

sudo snap install lxdCanonical’s installation guidance identifies the default stable LTS track as the recommended choice for most uses. Snap packages update automatically by default. That is convenient for security and maintenance, but operators with strict change-control requirements should use Snap’s hold or scheduling controls so an update does not arrive during an unplanned maintenance window. Record the update policy as part of your VPS runbook.
After installation, verify that the client is present:
lxc --versionThe documented material covers LXD 5.21, with the first-steps tutorial using LXD 5.21.8 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS images. Snap channels, client output and image aliases can change, so check the current Ubuntu documentation when reproducing the procedure on a later release.

Give an operator access without treating the group as ordinary permissions
LXD uses a local Unix socket by default. Add your account to the lxd group, then start a shell that includes the new membership:

idThis is a security boundary, not a convenience setting. Canonical states that “Local access to LXD through the Unix socket always grants full access to LXD.” A user with that access can attach host files or devices and alter security settings for every instance. Give lxd membership only to people you would trust with root-level control of the VPS. Do not add a general deployment account, a web application user or an unreviewed automation identity merely to make a script work.
Initialize the LXD daemon
For a straightforward first setup, run:
lxd init --minimalThe minimal profile is intended to get a new operator to a working container quickly. It creates the basic server configuration without asking you to design every storage and network choice. For a production host, use the interactive initializer instead:
lxd initThe interactive flow lets you choose storage, network availability and other server settings. Before accepting defaults on a busy VPS, decide how much storage the container pool may consume, whether the host already has a bridge or firewall policy, and where snapshots or backups should be kept. Initialization configures the manager; it does not harden the applications you later install inside a container.
Launch your first Ubuntu container
Launch an official Ubuntu 24.04 LTS image with a simple name:

lxc launch ubuntu:24.04 firstThe ubuntu: remote provides official Ubuntu images. launch both creates and starts the instance, so the command should return with a running container unless the host has a storage, network or image-download problem.
If you want to create an instance but keep it stopped, use init instead:
lxc init ubuntu:24.04 secondThis distinction is useful when you want to apply configuration or attach planned storage before the first boot. The image alias and release are part of the command: replacing 24.04 with another release changes what is downloaded, and image availability can change over time.
Confirm state, addresses and resource information
Start with the concise instance list:
lxc listThe list reports each instance’s name, state, IP addresses, instance type and snapshot information. A newly launched container may need a moment for its guest networking to finish configuring; an empty address field does not necessarily mean creation failed.

lxc info firstThe detailed output includes information such as architecture, process ID and usage data. Use it when a service appears to be running but is not reachable, or when you need to distinguish a stopped guest from one that is still booting.
Keep the container name consistent in scripts and documentation. Names such as first and second are valid examples, but production names should describe the workload and environment, such as game-lobby-prod or build-runner-test.
Container or virtual machine: choose deliberately
The same Ubuntu image family can be used for either an LXC container or an LXD-managed virtual machine. The default is a container:

If the VPS lacks virtualization capability, continue with containers and skip the VM steps. A container is not a substitute for every VM isolation property: it shares the host kernel, so evaluate the security boundary required by the workload before choosing it.

By default, LXD is intended for local administration through its Unix socket. Remote clients and the web UI require an HTTPS listener configured with core.https_address. The tutorial demonstrates binding the UI to [::1]:8443, which keeps it available on the local host for browser access without publishing it on the VPS’s public interface.

For remote administration, bind HTTPS to one deliberate address and firewall that port so only authorized hosts or subnets can reach it. Do not expose the daemon broadly to the Internet merely because a remote client is convenient. The management API is a control plane: compromise of its access is effectively compromise of the host’s container environment.

Decide which service ports a container actually needs, publish only those ports, and apply rules in both the VPS operating system and the provider’s firewall when one is available. Document whether a public address reaches the container directly or terminates at a reverse proxy. A game server, for example, may need one public gameplay port while its administration interface should remain private; do not infer that opening the daemon port is necessary for players to reach the application.
Security settings to apply before production use
- Patch the host and manager: apply Ubuntu and LXD security updates, and monitor Snap update policy.
- Limit operator access: keep
lxdgroup membership to people trusted with root-equivalent control. - Prefer unprivileged containers: use the default unprivileged model unless a documented requirement demands otherwise.
- Avoid privileged containers: Canonical’s security guidance warns that privileged containers are not root-safe.
- Restrict HTTPS administration: set
core.https_addressto the intended interface and firewall the management port. - Update guest software: patch the Ubuntu image and every package installed after launch.
- Protect recovery: take snapshots or backups before risky changes and test restoration separately from backup creation.
Unprivileged does not mean risk-free. A vulnerable application, weak SSH policy or accidentally published service can still be attacked. Treat container boundaries, host access, image provenance and network exposure as separate controls.
Common first-start problems and the safest response
The command says permission is denied
Check whether your current shell picked up the new group membership with id. If it did not, run newgrp lxd again or log out and start a new session. Do not solve a local permission problem by making the daemon remotely accessible.
The container has no address in lxc list
Wait briefly for guest networking, then inspect lxc info first to confirm that the instance is running. If it remains without an address, review the storage and network choices made during lxd init, the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall. A running container and a publicly reachable application are not the same thing.

An image download or launch fails
Check outbound connectivity, free disk space and the exact image alias. The documented example uses ubuntu:24.04; image aliases and remote availability can change. Do not delete a working instance until you have captured its configuration or data plan.
Remote administration works from everywhere
That is a policy failure, not a convenience feature. Narrow the HTTPS bind address and firewall rules to the management hosts or subnets that actually need access. Keep local Unix-socket access for local operators and review every member of the lxd group.
A repeatable checklist for an Ubuntu VPS
- Confirm supported Ubuntu Server, sudo access and sufficient free disk space; use 20 GiB as the tutorial’s minimum starting point, not as a workload estimate.
- Install LXD with
sudo snap install lxd, or verify that a cloud image already supplied it. - Add only trusted operators with
sudo usermod -aG lxd "$USER", then refresh the shell usingnewgrp lxd. - Run
lxd init --minimalfor a basic setup, or uselxd initto choose storage and networking deliberately. - Launch a container with
lxc launch ubuntu:24.04 name, or create it stopped withlxc init ubuntu:24.04 name. - Check state and addresses with
lxc list; inspect architecture, process ID and usage withlxc info name. - Choose a VM only with
--vmwhen the VPS provides virtualization support and the workload needs a guest kernel. - Keep LXD local unless remote administration is necessary; if it is necessary, bind HTTPS narrowly and firewall it.
- Patch host and guest software, retain unprivileged defaults, and establish tested snapshots or backups before production changes.
For most Ubuntu VPS beginners, this sequence provides the right balance: LXD supplies the management layer, the official Ubuntu image gives a known starting point, and conservative access rules prevent a simple container experiment from becoming an exposed host-control interface.
