The file is associated most clearly with Character Map (charmap.exe). It supplies the GetUName function and Unicode character-name resources. Its recorded description is “Unicode name Dll for UCE,” and it belongs to Microsoft Windows rather than Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the safest and most likely fix when Windows reports that getuname.dll is missing or corrupt. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. The scan can appear to pause for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is running.

When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available.
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Then try Character Map or the application that produced the error.
How to interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the missing or damaged component may have been restored.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means further repair is needed.
- A DISM error about missing source files may mean Windows Update cannot provide the required repair content.
If SFC cannot repair the file, review the CBS log referenced in the command output. Do not replace the DLL with an unrelated download. Microsoft documents using a matching repair source with DISM when Windows Update cannot supply the files:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<repair-source> /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture. A random ISO or an older Windows installation is not a reliable source.
Manually searching for the correct Windows build, interpreting CBS logs, and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate primary fix.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on downloads
A damaged or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components in an inconsistent state. After running DISM and SFC:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Try the affected program after restarting. If the error returns immediately after a repair, note whether Windows Update reports a failed installation. Repeated update failures can point to broader servicing or disk problems rather than an isolated getuname.dll issue.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFix 3: Check whether Character Map itself is damaged
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Character Map is the clearest known Windows program associated with getuname.dll. Test it directly before troubleshooting a third-party application.
- Open Start.
- Type
Character Map. - Open the result.
- If it opens, test the original application again.
- If it fails with the same DLL message, return to the DISM and SFC steps above.
You can also test the executable directly:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
charmap.exe
- Press Enter.
If Character Map works but only one program fails, the Windows DLL may not be the real problem. The application may have its own damaged files, an incompatible dependency, or an incorrect DLL search path.
On older Windows versions, Character Map could be reselected through Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Accessories and Utilities > Accessories > Character Map. That legacy path does not make downloading a standalone DLL appropriate for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 4: Check antivirus Protection History
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may quarantine or delete a damaged, altered, or falsely detected system file. It may also reveal that an application directory contains a suspicious copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
getuname.dll,charmap.exe, or the affected application.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches. Restore an item only when its location, signature, and origin establish that it is the legitimate Microsoft file. If there is any doubt, leave the item quarantined and let DISM and SFC restore the protected Windows copy.
Run a scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. If files disappear again after repair, use an offline scan and investigate recently installed software.
A Microsoft-signed copy in the Windows system directory is materially different from an arbitrary file found beside a game or in a user-writable folder.
Fix 5: Verify the file path and architecture
Time needed: 5 minutes
A missing-file dialog does not always prove that the named file is absent. The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, an incompatible architecture, or a file that exists in the wrong location.

Open Command Prompt and run:
where /r %windir% getuname.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy normally belongs in:
%windir%System32
The 32-bit copy belongs in:
%windir%SysWOW64
Despite its name, SysWOW64 is where Windows commonly places 32-bit system components on 64-bit installations. Windows uses file-system redirection so 32-bit programs access their appropriate system files.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into native System32, or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. The historical Windows XP file is version 5.1.2600.0 and approximately 591 KB because of its resource content. That does not make it suitable for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Modern Windows uses smaller architecture-specific files, and the correct file must match the Windows build, architecture, and resources.
Check the digital signature
In PowerShell, run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32getuname.dll"
Check the reported status and signer. A signature alone is not enough: an old Microsoft-signed file can still be incompatible with the installed Windows build, and a file in an unexpected application directory may indicate DLL hijacking.
If the file is missing from the expected location, use DISM and SFC. Do not copy a similarly named file from another computer unless it is a verified same-build recovery source and you understand the servicing consequences.
Fix 6: Repair the application that shows the error
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If Character Map opens normally and only one application reports getuname.dll, repair that application before changing Windows.
Look for one of these options in the application’s installer or settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the application’s data is backed up.
For traditional desktop software, run its original installer and choose Repair if offered. Otherwise uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official source.

Do not assume that a game requires getuname.dll simply because a generic error page mentions games. Public evidence does not establish a particular modern game or middleware package that ships this Windows DLL.
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
This repairs the game’s files. It does not replace protected Windows components, so continue with DISM and SFC if Windows programs also fail.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when there is a separate driver error
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
Driver problems are a low-probability cause of a getuname.dll error. Do not reinstall graphics, audio, or chipset drivers just because a DLL dialog appeared. Take this step only when Device Manager identifies a separate device fault or the application names a driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when appropriate.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver source when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not use a driver package to replace getuname.dll.
Identifying which of many installed drivers is stale can require checking each device and comparing versions manually. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows servicing for this system DLL.

Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair the file, Windows components continue failing, or the problem began after a known system change.
Try System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began after an update, cleanup tool, driver installation, or other identifiable change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without intentionally removing personal files. It does not replace a malware investigation or a failing disk.

Why getuname.dll errors happen
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What it usually means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted Windows file | Protected system content was damaged or removed | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Damaged Character Map component | charmap.exe fails as well |
Repair Windows components |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated a file | Review Protection history and scan |
| Damaged application | Only one program fails | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Wrong DLL location | A program is loading an unexpected copy | Check the path and signature |
| DLL hijacking or malware | A same-named file is beside an application or in a writable folder | Scan, remove the threat, and restore Windows files |
| Dependency or architecture problem | “Specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency | Use SFC instead of copying random files |
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that getuname.dll itself is absent. The Windows loader may be unable to find a dependency or may reject an incompatible architecture. This is why copying files one at a time often fails.
Do not register getuname.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components.
getuname.dll is documented with the GetUName export, not a COM self-registration interface. Running:
regsvr32 getuname.dll
is therefore not a normal repair step and may produce a misleading registration error. Use Windows servicing instead.
Is downloading getuname.dll safe
Random DLL download sites are not a safe default source. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to Windows XP, use the wrong architecture, lack the correct language resources, or be incompatible with the installed Windows build. It may also leave the damaged component store untouched.
Recommended Free Tools
Use these sources instead:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- Matching Windows installation media
- Windows 11’s repair reinstall
- The official installer for the application that fails
Manual replacement is appropriate only as an advanced recovery step using a verified same-build Windows source. For ordinary Windows 10 and Windows 11 repairs, let Windows Resource Protection and supported servicing mechanisms restore the component.
FAQ
Is getuname.dll a virus
No. getuname.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system DLL. A copy in an unexpected application directory, a failed signature check, or repeated replacement after repair can indicate tampering or DLL hijacking and deserves investigation.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET
There is no public evidence identifying it as part of those redistributable packages. Installing them “just in case” is not a verified fix.
Should I download the old 591 KB version
No. That size and version describe a historical Windows XP file. A Microsoft-signed XP file can still be wrong for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Recommended Free Tools
Where should the file be on 64-bit Windows
The native 64-bit copy normally belongs in %windir%System32. The 32-bit copy belongs in %windir%SysWOW64. Do not swap files between those directories.
Why does only one program fail
The application may be damaged, may have a missing dependency, or may be loading a same-named DLL from its own directory. Repair the application and inspect the path before replacing Windows files.
What should I do if the error returns after SFC
Check Windows Security Protection history, confirm the file path and signature, inspect the exact executable named by the error, and test Character Map. If files repeatedly disappear, run an offline malware scan and check the health of the storage device.
What is the correct order
Run DISM, run sfc /scannow, restart, install Windows updates, and test again. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application. Avoid random DLL downloads and do not use regsvr32 for this file.
