The best FPS to play right now depends on what you want from the genre. Battlefield 6 is the strongest choice for large-scale multiplayer, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the best modern campaign, and Doom Eternal remains the purest test of FPS combat. For free competitive play, start with VALORANT, Counter-Strike 2, Warzone, Apex Legends, or The Finals.

This is a use-case ranking rather than an objective scorecard. It includes campaigns, tactical shooters, battle royale games, extraction shooters, co-op adventures, VR, and classics. “Best” means most worth playing today—not simply newest or most popular.

Platform, pricing, and seasonal information was checked against the supplied August 2026 research and official sources where available. Live-service terms and store availability can change by region and platform.

The 19 best FPS games right now

1. Battlefield 6 — best for large-scale multiplayer warfare

Battlefield 6 is the best recommendation for players who want infantry combat, tanks, aircraft, destruction, squad play, and battles much larger than a typical 5v5 shooter. Its campaign and online modes give it broader appeal than a purely competitive release, while its combined-arms battles create situations that more tightly focused shooters cannot reproduce.

The trade-off is scale. Matches can be chaotic, and learning where to move, when to follow a squad, and how to deal with vehicles takes time. Players who prefer short, controlled rounds may find it overwhelming. It also requires a paid purchase, an EA account, and persistent internet access for online play. EA’s purchase page listed the base game at $69.99 when checked, with purchase routes through the EA App, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store; regional prices and promotions may differ. Do not confuse the paid game with the separately available free-to-download REDSEC component. See EA’s official purchase page.

2. DOOM: The Dark Ages — best modern single-player power fantasy

DOOM: The Dark Ages is the strongest campaign choice here for players who want a cinematic, aggressive shooter without the burden of competitive matchmaking. Its medieval setting, heavy weapons, and Shield Saw give the familiar DOOM formula a more grounded, close-range identity.

Customizable difficulty makes it more approachable than its reputation might suggest, but it is still built around forward momentum and direct confrontation. It is less aerial and mechanically frantic than Doom Eternal, so choose Eternal if movement mastery is your priority. Choose The Dark Ages if you want a contemporary campaign with spectacle, a clear power fantasy, and adjustable challenge. Check the official DOOM: The Dark Ages page for current platform and edition details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Doom Eternal — best pure combat system

Doom Eternal is the benchmark for modern arena FPS combat. Its encounters demand constant movement, weapon switching, resource management, target prioritization, and intelligent use of enemy weaknesses. The result is less a conventional military shooter than a fast tactical puzzle solved with guns, chainsaws, glory kills, and aggressive positioning.

That depth is also its main warning. Doom Eternal is demanding, and players who want a slower campaign or a relaxed power trip may prefer The Dark Ages. Its appeal is the process of becoming better at the combat system, not simply watching the protagonist become stronger. It remains an excellent choice on modern PC and console platforms, with availability and editions varying by store.

4. Counter-Strike 2 — best for competitive fundamentals

Counter-Strike 2 is the clearest choice for players who want shooting fundamentals to matter above everything else. Its round-based, no-respawn structure rewards recoil control, crosshair placement, map knowledge, economy management, timing, and communication. Every mistake can carry consequences, and improvement comes from understanding the game rather than relying on character powers or loot.

It is also one of the worst first FPS choices for most beginners. The learning curve is steep, team performance matters, and mechanical skill alone cannot compensate for poor positioning or economy decisions. The game is PC-focused and free to start through Steam. Matchmaking quality, cheating concerns, and competitive conditions can vary by region, mode, and date, so treat the game as a demanding competitive hobby rather than a casual evening shooter.

5. VALORANT — best tactical FPS with hero abilities

VALORANT combines Counter-Strike-style round structure and precise gunplay with agents who bring distinctive abilities. Positioning and aim remain central, but smoke, reconnaissance, movement, area denial, and team composition add another strategic layer.

Redragon M810 PRO Wireless RGB Gaming Mouse 10000 DPI Remapping Keys
  • Wireless for Boundless Winning - Cables truly will affect your detailed battle reaction, Redragon M810 pro wireless gaming mouse with 2.4Ghz nano receiver offers you the purest mouse moving experience and hype your KDA rise again.
  • Adjustable DPI to 10000 - Geared with 5 on-board DPI levels (500/1000/2000/3000/10000) which allow your mouse movements to be registered to each pinpoint location. 5 DPI levels are free to DIY with software, for gamers to switch swiftly in game.
  • Easy Keybinding with Macro - All 8 programmable buttons are all editable with customizable tactical keybinds in whatever game or work you are engaging. 1 rapid fire + 2 side macro buttons offer you a better gaming and working experience.
  • Ultra Long-lasting Core - Equipped with the PAW3325 Optical Pixart sensor, the mouse consumption is further optimized with 1000Hz Polling Rate in dual mode. Rechargeable battery keeps the mouse working up to 45 hours at maximum (eco-mode).
  • Adjustable True Color - With Redragon Pro driver, DIY endless style like dynamic streaming, breathing, waving. The game closely linked with various lighting modes makes your room full of competitive vibe.

That combination makes it more expressive than a purely austere tactical shooter, but also harder to read. New players must learn maps, weapons, economy, agents, ability interactions, and team roles. It is free-to-play, with optional live-service monetization, and current coverage lists it on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Console availability and regional access can change, so check the official VALORANT site before installing. Ranked play is a poor starting point; learn the basics in less punishing modes first.

6. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 — best mainstream all-round package

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is the broadest conventional package on this list: campaign content, high-volume multiplayer, and Zombies in one current ecosystem. It suits players who want familiar gunplay, frequent playlists, seasonal progression, and enough variety to move between competitive matches and cooperative play.

The cost is commitment. Large downloads, ongoing updates, established players, changing weapon metas, Battle Pass content, and cosmetic purchases are all part of the current Call of Duty model. The paid game and free Warzone component should not be treated as the same product. The official Season 05 announcement describes continuing multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, weapon, challenge, and Battle Pass content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Call of Duty: Warzone — best free large-scale battle royale

Warzone is the right starting point for players who want Call of Duty’s gunplay without buying the premium annual release. Its large-scale matches combine looting, loadouts, repositioning, squad coordination, and high-pressure fights.

Battle royale pacing is the central compromise. You may spend time moving, looting, or recovering before a brief fight ends the match. New players also have to learn armor, map rotations, loadouts, squad communication, and the relationship between Warzone and the wider Call of Duty client. It is free-to-start, but not every premium feature or piece of content is included. Check the current Call of Duty site for download and platform details.

8. Apex Legends — best movement-focused battle royale

Apex Legends is the battle royale choice for players who value movement and mechanical expression as much as shooting. Sliding, climbing, positioning, legend abilities, armor, and squad coordination combine into a fast game with a high skill ceiling.

It is punishing for newcomers. Fights can involve movement techniques, multiple abilities, third-party attacks, and experienced squads arriving from unexpected angles. Start with unranked modes and expect a substantial learning period before the game feels readable. Apex is free-to-play; optional cosmetics and live-service systems are not required to begin. Use the official Apex Legends page for current platform information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Rainbow Six Siege X — best information-heavy tactical shooter

Rainbow Six Siege X is for players who enjoy preparation, sound cues, destructible environments, operator utility, information gathering, and carefully planned breaches. Winning often means denying the opponent useful information or space before the first shot is fired.

It is among the least forgiving games here for beginners. Maps, operators, angles, sound, gadgets, and common attack patterns all require study, and a single mistake can end a round. Siege is a poor choice if you want instant respawns or a forgiving solo experience, but an excellent one if you enjoy learning a complex competitive system with a coordinated team. Verify the current edition, platform access, and ownership requirements before purchase.

10. The Finals — best destruction-driven competitive FPS

The Finals earns its place by making the arena itself part of the strategy. Destructible buildings and objective-based modes create opportunities that are not available in conventional military shooters: a team can change the route to an objective, destroy cover, or improvise an attack through a collapsing structure.

Its matches reward objective awareness and team composition more than elimination totals. Destruction also makes outcomes less predictable, and players who want rigid competitive patterns may find the game chaotic. It is free-to-start, with live-service content and optional purchases. Check the official site for current platform, season, and cross-play details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Overwatch 2 — best hero shooter

Overwatch 2 is the best fit for players who want distinct characters, role-based team fights, and abilities that matter as much as weapon accuracy. Its roster gives each match a different texture, from controlling space to protecting allies, healing, disrupting opponents, or creating opportunities for a coordinated attack.

The same variety creates a substantial learning curve. Team composition, counters, map objectives, and ability timing can matter more than raw aim, while balance and modes change over time. It is free-to-start, but the experience is built around an evolving service and optional monetization. Start with forgiving modes and a small group of heroes rather than trying to learn the entire roster immediately. Current information is available at the official Overwatch site.

12. Destiny 2 — best MMO-style FPS

Destiny 2 combines satisfying FPS weapons with character progression, loot, story missions, strikes, raids, planets, and cooperative activities. It is the strongest recommendation for players who want a shooter they can return to for months rather than finish in a weekend.

“Free-to-play” needs qualification here. The free portion provides an entry point, but the broader experience includes paid expansions and other content layers. Seasonal systems, changing content, and expansion ownership can make onboarding confusing. It is also better with a regular group for its deepest activities, although solo players have plenty to explore. PlayStation describes its free-to-play component and MMO-like co-op structure in its FPS guide. Check the current Destiny 2 site before buying expansions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Borderlands 4 — best loot-driven co-op FPS

Borderlands 4 is an FPS/RPG hybrid built around extravagant weapons, loot, character builds, boss fights, and cooperative progression. Its four Vault Hunters and science-fiction setting make it a natural choice for friends who want a campaign they can play together without the severe punishment of an extraction shooter.

The loot systems are both the attraction and the compromise. Weapon rarity, builds, and inventory management can sometimes overshadow immediate shooting feel, especially for players who want a clean arcade FPS. It is a paid game, and platform-specific co-op, cross-play, and progression terms should be checked for the edition you intend to buy. The official Borderlands site has current release and platform information.

14. Hunt: Showdown 1896 — best high-tension extraction shooter

Hunt: Showdown 1896 offers a distinctive PvPvE structure: hunters track targets through dangerous environments while dealing with AI monsters and other human teams. Its period firearms, deliberate pacing, sound-driven tracking, and high stakes make every encounter feel more consequential than a normal respawn-based match.

  • Play Longer : With 60-90 hours battery life and LIGHTSPEED Wireless, this rechargeable gaming mouse(with included USB-A to USB-C cable) delivers lag-free 8 kHz polling for uninterrupted focus

This is not a relaxed shooter. It is slow, lethal, and unforgiving, and failure can cost a character or valuable equipment. Choose Hunt if you enjoy tension, patience, and careful information gathering; skip it if you want constant action and instant re-entry after every death. It is a paid game with live-service conditions that can vary by platform and region. PC Gamer’s FPS guide explains its extraction and PvPvE identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. Deep Rock Galactic — best approachable co-op FPS

Deep Rock Galactic is the most welcoming co-op recommendation on this list. Its classes complement one another, missions take place in procedural caves, and teamwork matters without requiring the punishing precision of Siege, Counter-Strike 2, or Hunt.

It is a strong choice for friends who want repeatable missions, class roles, and progression rather than a heavily scripted campaign. Solo play is possible, but cooperation is where the design is strongest. Procedural environments provide longevity, though they cannot deliver the authored storytelling of a traditional campaign. Check the exact cross-play and cross-generation rules for your platforms—those terms are not interchangeable—on the official Deep Rock Galactic site.

16. Halo: The Master Chief Collection — best historical campaign-and-multiplayer package

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a large, unusually valuable collection of campaigns and multiplayer experiences. It gives new players a route through much of Halo’s history while retaining co-op, competitive modes, Forge, and the series’ distinctive combination of precise shooting, vehicles, shields, and sandbox encounters.

The collection is not one unified modern shooter. Individual games differ in movement, weapons, maps, matchmaking, and input feel, so choose the campaign or multiplayer era that suits you. It is especially good for players who want both solo and social content in one purchase. PC Gamer’s current FPS recommendations highlight its campaigns, multiplayer, Forge, and co-op features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

17. Titanfall 2 — best compact campaign and movement

Titanfall 2 remains one of the best reasons to play an older FPS. Its compact campaign combines wall-running, double-jumping, Titans, inventive set pieces, and mission designs that keep changing the relationship between pilot and machine.

The recommendation is strongest for the campaign. It has a smaller commercial ecosystem than current live-service shooters, and multiplayer availability and matchmaking conditions can vary by platform and date. Do not buy it expecting the same service scale as Battlefield or Call of Duty. Buy it for an inventive, focused campaign and movement system that still feels unusually satisfying. GamesRadar continues to include it among its leading FPS recommendations; see its FPS list.

18. Half-Life: Alyx — best VR FPS

Half-Life: Alyx is the specialist choice for players with a compatible PC VR setup. Its physical interaction, environmental problem-solving, weapon handling, and story-driven design demonstrate what a purpose-built VR FPS can do better than a flat-screen port.

This is not a general recommendation: it requires a gaming PC and compatible PC VR hardware. That makes the total cost much higher than buying an ordinary FPS, and it is unsuitable for console players or anyone who does not want to play in VR. The game is available through Steam.

  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver

19. Half-Life 2 — best classic narrative FPS

Half-Life 2 earns its place because its narrative pacing, physics-based interaction, environmental storytelling, and encounter design remain instructive and enjoyable. It provides a useful contrast to the live-service games above: one focused campaign, no seasonal grind, and a clear beginning-to-end structure.

Its age is obvious in the visuals and shooting compared with modern releases. Players seeking ranked matchmaking, weapon customization, or contemporary spectacle should choose another entry. Players willing to accept older presentation will find a compact, influential campaign that remains directly playable on accessible hardware. Free FPS games worth trying

Free-to-play is not the same as “the entire game costs nothing.” The clearest free starting points here are VALORANT, Warzone, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and The Finals. They are designed around continuing seasons and optional purchases, but cosmetic monetization is not a requirement for basic play.

Destiny 2 also has a free-to-play component, although major expansions and other content may require payment. Call of Duty similarly separates the free Warzone experience from the paid Black Ops 7 package. Check the current download and account requirements before assuming a feature is included in the free client.

Best FPS games for beginners

New players should prioritize readable objectives, adjustable difficulty, forgiving solo options, and a chance to learn without immediately facing highly experienced opponents. The best starting points are:

  • DOOM: The Dark Ages: a campaign with customizable difficulty.
  • Battlefield 6: large maps let beginners contribute through objectives, support, and squad play.
  • Borderlands 4: cooperative progression and loot make failure less punishing.
  • Deep Rock Galactic: clear class roles and cooperative missions.
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection: multiple campaigns and difficulty settings.
  • Overwatch 2: a good fit if you enjoy character abilities, though team roles still take practice.

Most beginners should avoid starting with ranked Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT, or Apex Legends, as well as Rainbow Six Siege X and Hunt: Showdown 1896. Those games are excellent, but their information burden, punishment for mistakes, and experienced player bases can make the first hours unnecessarily harsh.

Platform and access notes

PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S cover most of this list, but exact support differs by title and edition. VALORANT is currently listed in coverage for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. Half-Life: Alyx requires PC VR rather than a normal flat-screen setup. Older games such as Half-Life 2 and Titanfall 2 may be easier to run than new releases, but store editions and online support still vary.

Do not treat cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-generation support as synonyms. A game may let PC and console players compete together without carrying unlocks between platforms, or support PS4 and PS5 without supporting Xbox or PC. Check the publisher’s support page and the exact store edition before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscription catalogs also change. Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, EA Play, regional store discounts, taxes, and bundles can alter the cheapest way to access a game. Verify the live catalog rather than assuming a title remains included.

How to choose your first download

If you want… Start with…
A polished campaign DOOM: The Dark Ages
The deepest combat Doom Eternal
Competitive precision Counter-Strike 2
Abilities with tactical shooting VALORANT
A free battle royale Warzone
Fast movement and squad fights Apex Legends
Co-op with friends Deep Rock Galactic or Borderlands 4
High-stakes tactical tension Hunt: Showdown 1896 or Siege
Vehicles and huge battles Battlefield 6
A VR campaign Half-Life: Alyx

No single FPS is best for every player. Pick the format you will actually return to: a focused campaign, a competitive game you want to study, a co-op game that fits your group, or a free-to-play service whose ongoing updates justify the time investment.
