In Ghost of Tsushima, armor is functional equipment: each set changes Jin’s abilities, so the right choice depends on whether you are fighting head-on, sneaking, using a bow, or exploring. Most sets can be upgraded at an armorer, and you can customize their appearance with dyes and interchangeable helmets and body elements.
How armor works
Armor sets provide distinct stats and advantages rather than serving only as outfits. PlayStation’s beginner guide recommends considering which attire suits the moment; it also says armor upgrades strengthen effects and dyes change appearance. A PlayStation Blog Q&A records Sucker Punch representative Jason Connell confirming that players can interchange helmets and body elements.

Armor is the part of an outfit to consider for gameplay perks. Epic’s armor guide describes masks and helmets as cosmetic slots. Some armor sets are exceptions to the usual upgrade availability; check with an armorer rather than assuming every set can be improved.

Choose armor for the activity
For surviving direct fights
Samurai Clan Armor is oriented toward reducing incoming damage and building Resolve as you take hits. Mongol Commander’s Armor also combines health and damage reduction, with a detection benefit against Mongols while out of combat. For a more aggressive melee approach, Sakai Clan Armor boosts melee damage and Standoffs, while Gosaku’s Armor supports stagger pressure and can restore health after a staggered-enemy kill.

For stealth
Ronin Attire and Ghost Armor both slow detection. Ronin Attire also supports melee damage and crouched movement from pampas grass; Ghost Armor reduces the kills needed to enter Ghost Stance and may frighten enemies after kills. Fundoshi is the specialized option when you want to run or sprint without making noise.
For archery
Tadayori’s Armor is the set in this list built around bow handling and Concentration: it speeds nocking and reloading, extends Concentration, and replenishes it on headshots.

Kensei Armor is the focused choice. Its reported effects improve Resolve gains and Ghost-weapon damage, and Ghost-weapon hits weaken enemies’ damage while making them more vulnerable.
For exploration
Traveler’s Attire helps reveal map fog as you travel, track artifacts with Guiding Wind, and signals when you are near artifacts. It is a practical choice when searching the island rather than optimizing for combat.

Getting and upgrading armor
Armor rewards come through several kinds of progression: story missions, Mythic Tales, side quests, and exploration. The table identifies specific routes where the reviewed guides name them; for sets without a route, the guides do not establish a precise unlock in this overview. Edition matters for Hero of Tsushima Armor, which GameWith lists as a Deluxe Edition bonus.
