Ghost of Tsushima vs. Guns of Eschaton: Which PS5 Game Should You Play?

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Play Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut if you want a finished PS5 game you can buy now: a third-person samurai adventure with a cinematic revenge story, a broad scenic island to explore, the Iki Island expansion and Legends online co-op. Choose Guns of Eschaton only if its specific pitch—a first-person occult western with soulslike timing, parries, ammunition management and buildcrafting—sounds more exciting than immediate availability. Its reported PS5 launch is December 8, 2026, so it is still a future purchase as of October 18, 2026.

This is a fit comparison, not a review-score contest. Ghost of Tsushima is an established product with an official PS5 listing and price. Guns of Eschaton’s systems and release date come from October 16, 2026 reporting, while its final quality, price and retail availability remain unconfirmed.

Quick answer: which one should you play?

For most PS5 owners deciding what to play next, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the practical recommendation. It is available now, combines a complete open-world campaign with the Iki Island expansion, and adds Legends online co-op. Its third-person sword fighting, stealth options and cinematic presentation suit players who want a structured samurai story in a large landscape.

Guns of Eschaton is the specialist choice. Pick it if you specifically want to aim down sights in a supernatural version of the nineteenth-century American frontier, conserve ammunition, learn enemy behavior through a Codex, parry attacks with soulslike timing and tune a character through weapons, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables. You must be willing to wait for the reported December 8, 2026 release and accept that important launch details are not established yet.

What each game actually is

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

The Director’s Cut is the relevant PS5 edition of Ghost of Tsushima. Sony’s official PlayStation Store listing prices it at $69.99 and includes the base game, the Iki Island expansion, Legends online co-op, a digital mini art book, director’s commentary and bonus in-game items. The setting is a seventeenth-century Japanese island, and the main experience combines third-person samurai melee with stealth-oriented action.

That bundle matters when comparing value and scope. You are not choosing between a bare campaign and a separate expansion: Iki Island and Legends are part of the listed Director’s Cut package. The product is purchasable on PS5 now, so there is no release-window uncertainty before you can begin the campaign.

Guns of Eschaton

An October 16, 2026 report describes Guns of Eschaton as a mystical western soulslike first-person shooter. Its nineteenth-century American-frontier imagery is transformed by occult horror, mythology, religion, history and supernatural forces. The game is scheduled for December 8, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.

The reported design pitch is built around the marketing line “Every Bullet Counts.” The announced systems include firearms and ammunition types, precise timing and parries, enemy study through a Codex, character progression, flexible buildcrafting, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables. You can undertake the journey solo or play cooperatively with an ally. Those details describe the intended feature set; they do not establish how polished, long or difficult the finished game will be.

How the combat changes your moment-to-moment play

Ghost of Tsushima: read space, stance and approach

Ghost puts your character on screen, so positioning, sword reach and the surrounding terrain are part of every encounter. The game’s third-person view supports a readable relationship between your samurai, multiple opponents and the landscape. You can approach situations as direct melee confrontations or use stealth-oriented action when an open duel is not the best route.

The result is a combat loop centered on committing to swordplay and deciding how openly to enter a fight. Exploration and combat are visually connected: you travel through a Japanese island, find the next objective and choose whether to engage from the front or create a quieter opening. If you want the fantasy of being a swordsman first and a systems tinkerer second, this is the clearer match.

Guns of Eschaton: make every shot and opening count

Guns of Eschaton reverses that emphasis. You see the frontier through a first-person shooter perspective, and the reported “Every Bullet Counts” framing makes ammunition a deliberate concern rather than an unlimited background resource. Different ammunition types, firearms and consumables imply that choosing what to carry and when to spend it will matter as much as aiming.

Its soulslike influence appears in the reported focus on precise timing and parries. A player may need to watch an enemy’s attack, wait for a narrow response window and turn that timing into an opening. The Codex adds an analysis layer: studying foes is part of preparing for encounters, not merely collecting lore. That combination should appeal to players who enjoy learning patterns and adapting a build, but it may frustrate anyone who wants a fast, forgiving shooter.

Buildcrafting versus a defined samurai fantasy

Guns is reported to let you combine firearms, ammunition, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables into flexible builds. The attraction is experimentation: you can shape a character around the tools and supernatural abilities that fit your preferred approach. The trade-off is cognitive load. You will have more decisions about equipment and resources than a straightforward weapon-upgrade path, and the best choices cannot be judged until the final game explains its balance.

Ghost’s appeal is more focused. Its identity comes from inhabiting a samurai and navigating a story rather than assembling an occult loadout. That does not make one system objectively deeper; it means the games ask for different kinds of attention. Pick Ghost when the fantasy itself is the priority. Pick Guns when planning, timing and adaptation are the fantasy.

World, story and atmosphere

Why Ghost suits open-world explorers

Ghost of Tsushima’s structure is explicitly open-world, set on a Japanese island that you traverse as the campaign unfolds. The Director’s Cut also adds Iki Island, giving the package a second major setting within the same samurai-focused experience. The landscapes and cinematic framing are central to its appeal: you are not simply moving between arenas, but crossing a scenic historical setting while pursuing a revenge story.

This is the safer choice if your definition of a PS5 action game includes wandering off the critical path, taking in scenery and returning to a story at your own pace. The cited product information does not establish a specific map size or completion time, so do not choose it on an assumed number of hours. Choose it because open-world travel, a cinematic campaign and an additional island are confirmed parts of the package.

Why Guns suits occult-western fans

Guns of Eschaton offers a stranger tonal blend. Its frontier is not a conventional historical western: the reported setting overlays nineteenth-century American imagery with occult horror, mythology, religion, history and the supernatural, within an apocalyptic frame. That combination is the primary reason to wait for it. If you have been looking for a shooter that treats the frontier as a haunted myth rather than a realistic backdrop, its premise is more specific than Ghost’s.

The available report does not verify whether Guns has a seamless open world, distinct hubs, mission-based chapters or another structure, and it does not establish campaign length. Treat screenshots, wish-list descriptions and the release date as an outline of intent rather than proof of the final experience. Its strongest confirmed differentiator is the setting and the systems built around enemy study, timing and ammunition—not a verified map format.

Story expectations

Ghost offers a finished cinematic revenge narrative. Guns is described through its world and mechanics, but no completed review evidence is available to establish its writing quality, pacing or character work. If you want a known story arc tonight, Ghost removes that uncertainty. If you are willing to discover a new narrative premise at launch, Guns provides the more unusual starting point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solo play and co-op

Ghost’s two ways to play

The Director’s Cut includes the single-player Ghost of Tsushima campaign, the Iki Island expansion and Legends online co-op mode. That gives a solo player a substantial story-focused route and a separate cooperative option within the same purchase. Choose Ghost if co-op is a bonus after the campaign, or if you want a game that supports both a cinematic solo experience and online sessions.

The store listing confirms Legends is included; it does not mean the main revenge campaign becomes a drop-in co-op story. Think of Legends as the package’s online co-op mode rather than assuming every campaign mission supports multiple players.

Guns’ reported cooperative journey

Guns of Eschaton is reported to support a solo journey or co-op with an ally, described in the comparison information as two-player co-op. That is a direct match for friends who want to study enemies, manage ammunition and coordinate builds together. Because the game has not launched, the details that matter to a group—drop-in rules, progression sharing, cross-play, matchmaking and whether every mission supports two players—are not verified.

Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

If you need guaranteed online play now, Ghost is the only defensible choice between these two. If you are choosing a future co-op game on concept alone, Guns is the more focused option, but you should wait for final platform and feature details before making plans around it.

Availability, price and buying risk

Ghost is a known PS5 purchase

Sony’s PlayStation Store lists Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for PS4 and PS5 at $69.99. The listed package includes the base game, Iki Island, Legends online co-op, a digital mini art book, director’s commentary and bonus in-game items. That is the clearest buying proposition in this comparison: a specific edition, a confirmed PS5 storefront entry and a stated price.

The $69.99 figure is the official listing cited for the edition and region; store prices can vary by territory, taxes and later promotions. Use the product name “Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5” when checking a retailer so you do not accidentally select a different edition or platform version.

Guns is a future purchase

The reported December 8, 2026 date comes from PlayStation LifeStyle/Evolve Media reporting published October 16, 2026. It covers PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. As of October 18, 2026, the game is therefore not an available PS5 release. The date could move, and the final price, physical edition and confirmed retailer stock are not established.

Wishlist Guns if the concept is your priority, but do not treat a wishlist page as proof of launch inventory or a locked date. Recheck the official PlayStation listing and the developer or publisher’s final launch information before paying. There is no basis here for promising a performance target, a review score or a particular campaign length.

Which game fits your priorities?

“I want the best open-world exploration.”

Choose Ghost of Tsushima. Its open-world island setting and Iki Island expansion are confirmed parts of the Director’s Cut. Guns may offer a compelling frontier, but its world structure has not been verified, so it cannot currently answer an open-world requirement with the same certainty.

“I want swordplay and a cinematic samurai story.”

Choose Ghost without hesitation. Its third-person samurai melee, stealth-oriented options and revenge narrative all point at that fantasy. Guns’ firearms and occult systems are designed for a different role; it is not a substitute for wielding a sword in a historical Japanese setting.

“I want a shooter with demanding timing.”

Wait for Guns of Eschaton. The reported first-person viewpoint, ammunition pressure, parries, Codex enemy study and soulslike timing are exactly the features that distinguish it. Ghost can provide tense melee encounters, but it does not answer a first-person firearm request.

“I want a lot of character-building choices.”

Guns is the more obvious fit on the information currently available. Its reported buildcrafting spans firearms, ammunition types, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables. Ghost is preferable if you want the clarity of a samurai identity rather than a loadout built from many interacting categories.

“I want co-op with a friend.”

Choose Ghost if you want a confirmed option today: the Director’s Cut includes Legends online co-op. Consider Guns if you specifically want a two-person occult-western journey and can wait for launch details. Its co-op is reported, but matchmaking, progression and cross-platform behavior are not yet established.

“I need something to play this week.”

Buy Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Guns’ scheduled date is still in the future, and no amount of enthusiasm for its premise changes that availability difference.

“I am choosing based on novelty.”

Guns offers the rarer combination: an occult-apocalyptic western, first-person shooting and soulslike combat principles. Ghost is the more familiar high-level fantasy—samurai action in historical Japan—but its completed presentation and breadth are precisely why it is the lower-risk purchase.

How Ghost of Yōtei affects the decision

A nearby source of confusion is Ghost of Yōtei, which is not Guns of Eschaton. Sony’s October 2, 2025 launch announcement describes Yōtei as a standalone PS5 experience set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima in rural Japan during the 1600s, starring a wandering mercenary named Atsu. It is another samurai game, not the unnamed western action title in this comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony listed Yōtei’s launch editions at $69.99 MSRP for standard, $79.99 for digital deluxe and $249.99 for collector’s. The announcement also says a free Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op mode is planned for 2026. Those details may help explain why starting with Tsushima appeals to players who want the earlier game’s world and combat before moving to another standalone samurai story, but they do not change Guns of Eschaton’s identity or release schedule.

Starting with Tsushima is especially sensible if you want a complete experience before Yōtei. You do not need Yōtei to understand Tsushima, and you should not wait for Yōtei if the immediate choice is between a finished Director’s Cut and an unreleased occult western.

A low-risk decision checklist

  1. Decide whether you can wait. If you want to play now, select Ghost. If December 8, 2026 is acceptable, continue comparing the mechanics.
  2. Choose your viewpoint. Third-person swordplay and stealth point to Ghost; first-person firearms point to Guns.
  3. Choose your world. A scenic seventeenth-century Japanese island and Iki Island point to Ghost; an occult nineteenth-century frontier points to Guns.
  4. Choose your complexity. A focused samurai role points to Ghost; ammunition types, Codex study, parries and multi-part buildcrafting point to Guns.
  5. Check your co-op expectation. Ghost has the included Legends online mode. Guns is reported to support solo or two-player play, but final co-op details are pending.
  6. Verify the purchase page. Ghost’s cited PS5 price is $69.99. For Guns, wait for confirmed pricing, edition details and retail availability rather than assuming them.

Final recommendation

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the better recommendation for a reader asking what to play on PS5 now. Its finished open-world samurai campaign, Iki Island expansion, cinematic revenge story and included Legends co-op answer more immediate needs with a known product and a listed $69.99 price.

Guns of Eschaton is the better conceptual match only when the occult western itself is the deciding factor. Its reported first-person gunplay, “Every Bullet Counts” resource pressure, parries, Codex enemy analysis, flexible builds and optional ally co-op make it unlike Ghost, but the PS5 release is still scheduled rather than available, and launch quality and pricing remain unresolved. In short: play Ghost now; wait for Guns if its specific western-soulslike experiment is what you actually want.
